About Us

We help busy professionals with young families to create custom homes that create order with style suitable to their lifestyle that tailors to their aesthetic preferences so they can create fun memories with their children and entertain family and friends while We make it feel effortless and take care of all the construction and design details in the background. Whether you’re embarking on a full-blown renovation project or simply need assistance fine-tuning design ideas you already have, starting a major design project can be overwhelming. It’s hard to do it all on your own! Most of our clients felt the same way before realizing that they needed help and reached out. We do not impose a specific design style to projects. Our greatest joy is helping families achieve a balance between function and their desired aesthetics as they realize their dreams for their home. Esther Chi started Mudan Interior Design in 2015 after working in various award-winning interior design and architectural firms. Her work portfolio boasts high-profile commercial and residential projects all over the United States and the world. She gained her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, and received a Master degree in Interior Design from the Pratt Institute in New York. Esther is a Certified Interior Design in the State of Maryland, a National Council for Interior Design Qualification accredited professional and a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design accredited professional (LEED AP) with the US Green Building Council. She moved to Montgomery county in Maryland after a number of years spent living and designing in New York City.

I found MID on Houzz and I'm so glad I did. I needed a consult on paint colors and flooring choices for my condo apt. MID was willing to help me. During a consult, Esther delivered recommendations for both. I'm very excited. In addition, Esther provided advice on what not to do, gave insights on lightbulb "temperature" choices and wall switch/socket updates, and which paint finishes to use where. I especially appreciated Esther taking into consideration my physical constraints (vision & mobility) in developing her recommendations for me.

She has an extensive network of furniture, fabric, and lighting contacts and has made the design process for my new build as seamless as it could be. Esther helped us design the common areas of our new home. We loved working with her and are super happy with her design and selection of furniture! She not only saved us tons of time and energy, but also educated us on things we would have not known if we were doing this on our own (as first time home owners). We really appreciated that she was transparent with her process, super organized, detail oriented and great at communication. She was also very flexible when we had new needs. Thankfully, Esther's support of our extensively-expanded and renovated brownstone continued well past the formal end of our originally contracted arrangements. Unsurprisingly, following construction and after a period of time when my family and I were able to begin enjoying the many changes made to our living space, there was a host of minor tweaks and improvements that we wanted to make - issues and opportunities that Esther helped us navigate and resolve, and all done with the grace, responsiveness and professionalism that she had earlier demonstrated, at the beginning of our renovation. We have leveraged, many times over, Esther's original commitment to our project, availing of her vast knowledge of a wide variety of structural and stylistic aspects. Esther's never-wavering support of this very stressful and extended renovation was fundamental to its ultimate success -- we remain very grateful for the services provided by her and her firm.
