Located in the heart of scenic Rockbridge County, Virginia the company was established in 1978 by John Spencer. John had been the Manager and a partner in the former Lambert Building Supply. After purchasing the business, John, together with his wife, Judith renamed the business in 1988. A new Spencer Home Center was relocated and a new modern facility built to service the growing needs of the county. Among other innovations the new Spencer's featured, Virginia's first drive-through building material warehouse and John served as a leader and President of the former Virginia Building Material Association. Since that time, onto today the business has been a resource for the trades. Now in its second generation the business is owned and managed by Eric Spencer, who continues to build upon the fine reputation started by his parents.
