My builder uses Houzz Pro to plan the timeline and give detailed estimates and daily updates with photos of progress, and provide invoices at pre-agreed key points in the build. This made the whole experience much more efficient and stress-free.

About Us

Train Architects is an award-winning architectural design firm founded in 1990. All of our projects are site and client specific, and our work is characterized by dedicated, attentive, personal service. We view all projects as a collaboration between the owner, ourselves, and the builder. As experienced architects, we strive to make a project “feel” right for the site, complementary to the context in which it sits, and if an addition—seamless. Our goal is to meet the client’s wishes and desires, in a way that results in a solution that supports lifestyle patterns, family interaction, and comfort in an elegant construct. The firm has received more than 20 design awards, including five for excellence in residential design. The firm’s houses have been featured in Southern Living and c-ville Abode.

In 1985 Kirk Train designed a home that we built in South Carolina. The two story style was Palladian and was perfectly proportioned. It had presence and integrity, even for its small size of under 2400 square feet. It was snapped up so quickly when we decided to sell that we never got the For Sale sign up! It was my favorite house of all time, and I regret that I never had the chance to build it again. It would have been perfect on several acres in the country. I also had the privilege of working with Kirk in 2012 when I rented a home in Charlottesville. He helped me choose paint colors and created a floor plan, utilizing the pieces of furniture that I owned. The effect was quite charming. I've now relocated to California and will continue to ask Kirk for advice. He's the best!

Our company has worked with Train Architects on multiple projects over the years. Their designs are smart and personal. As they contractor, I appreciate their approach: They are first and foremost the advocate of their client, providing noteworthy solutions to their design program. They are also well experienced in the field conditions experienced by the builder, and forge solutions to issues as they arise on site. This leads to a collaborative approach, recognizing the role of each party in creating successful projects. We look forward to our next project with Train Architects.

Train Architects worked with us over a number of years on several renovation projects, including a complete kitchen remodel, as well as the addition of our beautiful back yard pavilions. We cannot recommend them highly enough. Kirk Train listened to our wishes, evaluated the way we utilized our spaces, and made our vision become a reality. His design expertise modernized our kitchen and transformed our back yard into a peaceful retreat. We couldn’t be happier with the results. Kirk is truly gifted as a professional architect!

My relationship with Train and Partners began 20 years ago with two large commercial projects. Since that time they have designed two residential remodeling projects plus designed and managed the construction of two vacation homes in the Blue Ridge Mountains. It is quite obvious that we have been more than pleased with their professional talents and our personal relationship. It is a very satisfying experience to have someone convert your long and sometimes vague wish list into a beautiful home.
