Plainfields was named for a simple, plain field, a former cow pasture with a view to the Blue Ridge Mountains. Its design and orientation are simple; the residence is essentially a two over two dogtrot-type house oriented to the mountains. Construction began in the spring of 1988 and continues today. Additional projects to date include the Garage with garret apartment (2000), Kitchen remodel (2004), the Guest Room/Office Shed (1990/2009), the Red Garden Shed (1998), Wine Room (2008) and finally the extension of a master suite and addition of a Book Room on the ground floor (2011).
