The Ages-Old Fabric Still Manages to Feel Fresh
In my continued pursuit of all things spring, I present to you the most light, airy, colorful pattern I can think of: gingham. Basically, it's the season encapsulated in fabric form. Whether done in a bright color or, somewhat surprisingly, black and white, it brings a certain playfulness to a room that feels fresh, functional and totally appropriate for the month of April. See how the pattern is used around these Houzz homes.
A tablecloth in flowering dogwood-yellow perks up the dining table in as little time as it takes to unfold it.
A ruffled gingham bed skirt sounds pretty girly, but done in black with black accents throughout, it looks perfectly appropriate in a gender-neutral guestroom.
Being such a classic, no-frills pattern, gingham lends itself well to pairing with other fabrics. Here, grassy green curtains pick up on the shades of the throw pillows nearby.
And speaking of pillows, one or two in gingham can be switched into rotation in warmer weather for a more seasonal look.
And since gingham has been around for literally hundreds of years, why not go ahead and upholster a piece in the pattern? Unlike more trendy fabrics, it's not likely to look dated anytime soon.
Black and white in a small check feels particularly timeless. Yet paired with cool aqua, it still manages to feel of-the-moment.
A pair of bolsters brings just the slightest peek of gingham to this living room.
Beige gingham seems a smart choice for banquette seating; the small checks will hide stains well.
Smooth the cloth out, top with some of spring's bounty, and the table is set for a casual and seasonal meal.
