This award-winning and intimate cottage was rebuilt on the site of a deteriorating outbuilding. Doubling as a custom jewelry studio and guest retreat, the cottage’s timeless design was inspired by old National Parks rough-stone shelters that the owners had fallen in love with. A single living space boasts custom built-ins for jewelry work, a Murphy bed for overnight guests, and a stone fireplace for warmth and relaxation. Upon entering the penthouse the light and dark contrast continues. The exposed ceiling structure is stained to mimic the 1st floor's "tarred" ceiling. The reclaimed fir plank floor is painted a light vanilla cream. And, the hand plastered concrete fireplace is the visual anchor that all the rooms radiate off of. Siri Blanchette/Blind Dog Photo Associates This living room designed by Marcye Philbrook is textural, soothing, comfortable and contemporary. The cable rail "holding" up the shelves, concrete mantel in a sandy tone, floating shelves in a very textural laminate, modern fireplace with driftwood inside as well as the warm beiges and cool grays playing off of each other remind one of the natural Maine shore.

The sunroom addition extends the entertaining space and allows the homeowners to comfortably use the room year-round. It features a coffered ceiling and a Rumford fireplace composed of repurposed barn beams and fieldstone to tie into the home's exterior. The island is a dark charcoal with cool undertones that coordinates with the cabinetry and transom work in both the neighboring mudroom and breakfast area. White subway tile, quartz countertops, white enamel pendants and gold fixtures complete the update. The ends of the island are shiplap material that is also used on the fireplace in the next room. In the new mudroom, we used a fun porcelain tile on the floor to get a pop of pattern, and walnut accents add some warmth. Each child has their own cubby, and there is a spot for shoes below a long bench. Open shelving with spots for baskets provides additional storage for the room. We designed this modern, cozy master bedroom to support the family's lifestyle. We installed a wall of 3D tile to house the new electric fireplace, television and components. We dropped a George Nelson Bubble Lamp on a dimmer switch above the bed for a modern touch. The dramatic two-story living and dining areas feature a stone-clad fireplace with integral television niche located at an optimal height for comfortable viewing above a 5 foot linear fireplace framed in engineered quartz by Caesarstone. The cable rail catwalk overlooking the space connects the upstairs media room with two of the home's four bedrooms. With a complete gut and remodel, this home was taken from a dated, traditional style to a contemporary home with a lighter and fresher aesthetic. The interior space was organized to take better advantage of the sweeping views of Lake Michigan. Existing exterior elements were mixed with newer materials to create the unique design of the façade.
