The industrious clients came to us with dreams of a new garage structure to provide a home for all of their passions. The design came together around a three car garage with room for a micro-brewery, workshop and bicycle storage – all attached to the house via a new three season porch – and a native prairie landscape and sauna structure on the roof. This larger home, constructed on Martha’s Vineyard, is a collection of informal, dormered gable components and grounding one-story, shed-roof elements that reduce its overall scale. Designed to take advantage of a gently sloping up-Island property, this 5500 sq. ft. (not including finished basement) six-bedroom home includes staggered floor levels that climb from the front of the site to the rear. Generous, open living space on the entry level -- anchored on the west end by a fireplace and on the east end by the kitchen -- borders a dining area that’s nestled under a roof which also shelters the adjacent wrap-around porch. A deck off the rear of the dining space extends around the kitchen and is easily accessible from the nearby family room, too. Bedrooms occupy the other above-grade levels, including, at the upper-most level, the master suite comprised of a study, roof deck, master bath, walk-in closets and the master bedroom. A clean-lined interior of warm neutrals sets a soothing tone in which the Island landscape is welcomed through expansive windows, porches and decks. Clad in white cedar shingles with a red cedar roof, the West Tisbury House will softly weather in-tune with its meadow site. This eco-friendly deck is made from Fiberon composite decking. The step-up design helps define different areas of the space. The planting beds at the perimeter of the deck also frame the space and add extra color. The home owner found a creative use for the deck boards... matching built-in bench seats! The product used is Fiberon's ProTect Advantage, in the 'Western Cedar' color.

Deck - mid-sized transitional backyard deck idea in Other with a roof extension

The deck is built using low-maintenance Fiberon decking in Rosewood with a vinyl Mount Hope rail in Cape Cod T-Rail. We installed Kichler low-voltage deck lighting for safety and for adding ambiance to the space as well. The deck features a custom-fabricated white vinyl pergola with innovative fixed louvers and interlocking slats which deliver optimum shade. Underneath the deck is just as noteworthy as the upper portion, as all the posts and beams are wrapped in rough-hewn cedar and finished with interlocking concrete pavers at their base. The introduction of cedar into this space adds an elegantly rustic contrast to the seamless design. Under the deck, is a finished, ultra-functional and versatile outdoor living space. This space was achieved by installing a DrySnap under-deck rain carrying system which allows the area under the deck be utilized to the same benefit evident in a covered porch or patio setting. The pergola, above the uppermost horizontal 'strip' of cedar, is a bronze poly-carbonate, which allows light to come through, but which blocks UV rays and keeps out the rain. It's also available in clear, and a few more colors.

Harold Cross This spacious deck north of Des Moines in Ames features low-maintenance, Trex Transcend decking. Stairs wrap around the full front edge of the bayed deck, with a Belgard Urbana hardscaped landing easing the transition to the backyard. A cedar pergola sits over a portion of the deck and Belgard Tandem Wall columns and a planter box define the ares of the deck nicely. A Belgard Pizza Oven is the cooking centerpiece of this space. We integrated Belgard’s Tandem Wall stone into the pergola columns to provide more countertop space for this outdoor kitchen area. Lots of outdoor lighting on this space make it great for evening pizza parties.

This four bedroom beach house in Washington's South Sound is all about growing up near the water's edge during summer's freedom from school. The owner's childhood was spent in a small cabin on this site with her parents and siblings. Now married and with children of her own, it was time to savor those childhood memories and create new ones in a house designed for generations to come. At 3,200 square feet, including a whimsical Crow's Nest, the new summer cabin is much larger than the original cabin. The home is still about family and fun though. Above the 600 square foot water toys filled garage, there is a 500 square foot bunk room for friends and family. The bunk room is connected to the main house by an upper bridge where built-in storage frames a window seat overlooking the property. Throughout the home are playful details drawing from the waterfront locale. Paddles are integrated into the stair railing, engineered flooring with a weathered look, marine cleats as hardware, a boardwalk to the main entry, and nautical lighting are found throughout the house. This large deck was built in Holmdel, NJ. The flooring is Ipe hardwood. The rail is Azek brand synthetic railing system. The pergola is clear cedar that has been primed and painted. The columns are 10" square Permacast brand. The high underside of the deck is covered with solid Ipe skirting. This blocks the view of the deck under-structure from people enjoying the lower paver patio. Low voltage lights were added to the rail posts, in the pergola and in the stair risers. These lights add a nice ambiance to the deck, as well as safety.
