“Greensboro’s Grandest House” was recently selected as the 2013 ShowHouse presented by the Junior League of Greensboro and national media sponsor Traditional Home. Among the local and national design talent featured in this special fundraising event was design duo Patti Allen and Stephanie James of Furnitureland South, who transformed the estate’s patio into a classic, colorful and cozy space. Built in the early 1920s, the Adamsleigh estate is more than 15,000 square feet and covers 13.5 acres that include pools, a lake, tennis courts, a stone gazebo and a five-car garage. The 30×60 patio presented a special design challenge – the space was in disrepair and sat unevenly on a downward slope. Rising to the challenge, Patti and Stephanie partnered with Outer Space Landscapes to change the elevation of the patio in order to draw attention to the focal point and inspiration of the project: a beautiful canopy sofa by Century Furniture. The addition of 6 tons of landscaping material included Pennsylvania blue stone, pebbles, sand, cherry trees, azaleas and geraniums all blooming in the colors of the latest Sunbrella fabrics featured in the outdoor furnishings: crisp, sandy white, fuchsia and tangerine. Patti and Stephanie wanted to showcase clean and classic outdoor style with an edge of color and unexpected elements. Playful ottomans by Baker float in the space for multiple functions, adding an extra pop of color to the sophisticated setting which includes a dining table by Oscar de la Renta, organic spot tables from Phillips Collection, and daybeds and seating from Century Furniture. Combining their passion for interior spaces with signature designs, Allen and James Designs gave this outdoor space the comfort, color and style it deserved. FOCUS A majestic, floor-to-ceiling tree anchors the space, boldly transporting the beauty of nature into the house--along with the fun of swinging from a tree branch, pitching a tent or reading under the beautiful canopy. The tree shares pride of place with a unique, retroinspired room divider housing a colorful padded nook perfect for reading, watching television or just relaxing. STORAGE Multiple storage options are integrated to accommodate the family’s eclectic interests and varied needs. From hidden cabinets in the floor to movable shelves and storage bins, there is room for everything. The two wardrobes provide generous storage capacity without taking up valuable floor space, and readily open up to sweep toys out of sight. The myWall® panels accommodate various shelving options and bins that can all be repositioned as needed. The floor drop doors are all equipped with slow glide closing hinges so no fingers will be trapped.

Its modest size makes it the coziest area of the house, and because of that it is the couple's favorite wintertime spot. "It's so comfortable to just lay around in," Jennifer says. "You sit down and all of a sudden you're falling asleep." The Milo Baughman settee is currently Jennifer's favorite piece. A recent birthday gift from Raymond, Jennifer found the tufted leather sofa on Etsy and drove 10 hours across Pennsylvania to pick it up. The elegant driveway showcases a sophisticated design featuring neatly aligned potted trees and shrubs along a pristine white brick wall. The classic white planters add a touch of timeless charm, while the lush greenery creates a welcoming and serene atmosphere. This beautifully designed driveway not only enhances the curb appeal of the property but also provides a harmonious blend of nature and architecture, perfect for any upscale Houston home seeking a refined landscape design.

Combining influences from nature with the clean lines of modern design, Portland architect and designer Brendon Farrell created the Stand and Stem lamp series as echoes of trees and flowers. While modernism strips design to its essentials, Farrell looks to nature to define what those essentials are. "Every part has a purpose," he says. "But that purpose isn't always function. Sometimes it's power. Or beauty."

This family backyard outdoor living area was designed to showcase the natural greenery of the Pacific Northwest around planned areas for relaxation, outdoor dining and entertainment. The central feature is a patio plaza designed with curving natural shapes and made with Mutual Materials Columbia Slate Patio Stone in the color Summit Blend. Applying a paver sealant coating on top of the Columbia Slate intensifies the colors while providing protection from weather elements and fading. A prominent backyard feature is a large tree, which the patio was built around. Using Mutual Materials Roman Stack® retaining wall blocks, a raised circular garden planter was built around the tree and enhanced with plantings to create a natural foundational feature. The Summit Blend color was also chosen for the RomanStackstone, to color coordinate with the Summit Blend color in the patio stone.
