The small antique chandelier was the inspiration for this powder room, while the acrylic in the wall sconce and mirror add a touch of updated transitional style. The metallic grey wallpaper contrasts beautifully with the white vanity cabinet. The quartz counter top has subtle grey veining with a shaped backsplash and ogee edge and offers a nice backdrop for the polished nickel faucet. Brass on the mirror and sconce tie in nicely with the chinoiserie corner shelf, while framed fern art fill the need for just one piece of art. The powder room offers a space of elegance, if only for a moment!

This laundry room was tight and non-functional. The door opened in and was quickly replaced with a pocket door. Space was taken from the attic behind this space to create the niche for the laundry sorter and a countertop for folding. The tree wallpaper is Thibaut T35110 Russell Square in Green. The countertop is Silestone by Cosentino - Yukon Leather. The overhead light is from Shades of Light. The green geometric indoor/outdoor rug is from Loloi Rugs. The laundry sorter is from The Container Store.

Black and white carry throughout this crisp powder room: black and white marble floor tiles, black and white graphic wallpaper, and a black and white double wall sconce. Elegant white bathroom fixtures, including the pedestal sink, and a long narrow silver framed rectangular mirror bring additional brightness to this small powder room. WKD’s experience in historic preservation and antique curation restored this gentleman’s farm into a casual, comfortable, livable home for the next chapter in this couple’s lives. The project included a new family entrance and mud room, new powder room, and opening up some of the rooms for better circulation. While WKD curated the client’s existing collection of art and antiques, refurbishing where necessary, new furnishings were also added to give the home a new lease on life. Working with older homes, and historic homes, is one of Wilson Kelsey Design’s specialties. This project was featured on the cover of Design New England's September/October 2013 issue. Summary of Scope: gut renovation/reconfiguration of kitchen, coffee bar, mudroom, powder room, 2 kids baths, guest bath, master bath and dressing room, kids study and playroom, study/office, laundry room, restoration of windows, adding wallpapers and window treatments Background/description: The house was built in 1908, my clients are only the 3rd owners of the house. The prior owner lived there from 1940s until she died at age of 98! The old home had loads of character and charm but was in pretty bad condition and desperately needed updates. The clients purchased the home a few years ago and did some work before they moved in (roof, HVAC, electrical) but decided to live in the house for a 6 months or so before embarking on the next renovation phase. I had worked with the clients previously on the wife's office space and a few projects in a previous home including the nursery design for their first child so they reached out when they were ready to start thinking about the interior renovations. The goal was to respect and enhance the historic architecture of the home but make the spaces more functional for this couple with two small kids. Clients were open to color and some more bold/unexpected design choices. The design style is updated traditional with some eclectic elements. An early design decision was to incorporate a dark colored french range which would be the focal point of the kitchen and to do dark high gloss lacquered cabinets in the adjacent coffee bar, and we ultimately went with dark green.

The desk area was also done in the same grey stained oak, with a clean floating design to maximize seating space and create an open feel. The wallpaper takes a more prominent role here behind the woodwork. Cords were eliminated largely by going wireless wherever possible. The remaining cords are run through the wall. © emily gilbert
