The newly installed front garden grounds the home in the landscape. The in-ground stone plinths lead the eye to the front door, provide interesting negative space, and pull the lines of the horizontal siding into the garden. Photo by Jay Sifford.

The client wanted a slight Asian feel to this area so we installed a triptych of vertical stone plinths that both blend in, and juxtapose, the boulders alongside the creek bed. Photo by Steve Knight.

This new home, like some in mid-town Toronto, occupies a half-width lot of 25’. The long narrow home had a tiny backyard, with only 32’ from the house to the property line. The owners were hoping to have a pool, so they asked Betz how they could get maximum enjoyment from the minimal space available.

To hide the pool equipment, Betz built a ledgerock feature wall with a 6’ sheer descent waterfall. It can be set at full strength or to a ‘wet wall’ trickle of water. Each end has a ledge with a dramatic gas fire torch. The pool features custom vinyl over steel walk-in steps, plus an underwater bench, complete with spa jets.

With backyard space taken by stairs down from the kitchen, there was only room for a custom 9.5’ x 17’ vinyl pool. It has a Gold Pebble liner and a 5 1/2’ deep end which allows the kids to jump in, splash around and tread water. The built-in Badu swim jet is used regularly for fitness and perfecting kayak paddling technique.

For this busy young family, this compact backyard is the epitome of low maintenance living. No lawn to mow, easy care decorative grasses, no fuss ground cover and a sprinkling of colourful perennials. This setup is the winning recipe for maximum pool time, barbecue fun and good times watching the game!

For the small patch of lawn, artificial turf was chosen because it’s a small area with heavy use of outdoor furniture. The sunken outdoor living room is nicely sheltered and doubles the amount of outdoor living space. It sits four steps below ground level and three steps above the basement walkout.

The outdoor living room is furnished with durable With the backyard facing north, the covered living room is a cool shady spot to hang out on hot summer days. The comfy outdoor furniture has durable fabric, so it’s inviting to lounge there in a wet bathing suit while you catch up on some summer reading.
