Inspiration for a timeless porch remodel in Minneapolis

One of our other sample apartment project was completed for a reputable Jaipur builder. The room could be designed as we wanted, as long as it was aesthetically pleasing. What surprises people most when entering and walking on the glowing white surface in this particular Private Residence (Williamsburg, VA) is when they find out they are walking on a sea of glass! Yes, GLASS! Not marble, not granite, but GLASS! Nathan Allan has created a very fresh, unique flooring surface, which is smooth to touch on the majority of the glass surface, yet has an almost invisible safety finish permanently embedded in the glass surface. THE GLASS Nathan Allan’s Glass Flooring incorporates features which are visually stunning, while also providing a safety finish which provides comfort to everyone walking on the glass. Our Sandstone texture is forged into the bottom surface of the glass, while our exclusive Glass Sandpaper safety finish is fused onto the walking surface. To enhance all features, we added a bright, sparkling, White Metallic color finish throughout each flooring panel. SPECIFICATIONS Each Glass Flooring panel is produced in 1/2″ (12mm) thick, Low Iron, tempered safety glass. Tempered glass provides added strength, insuring that the Glass Flooring can accept a heavy load. Panels vary in size and dimension, with most panels measured at a block size of 5’0 x 6’0 (1500mm x 1800mm). Perimeter Edge panels were carved and shaped to fit tightly against the curved walls. Glass Sandpaper, ASTM tested in labs with the highest slip-coefficient safety ratings, is fused onto the walking surface, to provide a very comfortable and effective safety feature. DESIGN A White Sea of Glass flooring is the finished result of combining a light Sandstone texture on the bottom glass surface, with the added touch of a sparkling White Metallic color finish. Combined with our Glass Sandpaper safety finish, and the natural and artificial light sources, our Glass Flooring shimmers within the entire entrance space. INSTALLATION Using very important installation techniques, Nathan Allan worked hand in hand with great team of professionals: Vicki Bristow, designer, W. M. Jordan Company, GC, and Pompei Inc, glass flooring installer. Templates were produced for all perimeter edge panels, and every shaped panel. This kitchen was a Reface Project from “Showplace Wood Products- Renew” line! The perimeter doors and drawers are Showplaces “Arlington” door style in their new Coastal Gray in a Casual Vintage Matte Finish with Walnut Glaze. The island was restyled to look like a piece of furniture by adding decorative fluted leg posts in the corners in Showplaces and adding a row of apothecary drawers to raise the upper level to accept the glass countertop. The cherry wood doors and drawers on the island are Showplace’s “Waterford” door style in Russet stain with Vintage Matte Finish that has been distressed to look old and weather with time.

Designer: Terri Becker Construction: Star Interior Resources For this luxurious kitchen remodel, we removed the marble counter tops and installed quartz counter tops with a waterfall edge for the island. We altered the cabinetry to accept new sub-zero stainless steel appliances, we painted the existing cabinetry a cool gray, added stunning structural porcelain Emser tile in the kitchen and wet bar for the back splash, installed 60" stainless steel under mount sink with two faucets. We installed a custom sliding barn door for the pantry.

Image by Drew kelly Proof that the adage “the best perfumes come in small bottles…” is true is this two-bedroom apartment in downtown San Francisco. We collaborated with the owner, a retired designer recently settled in San Francisco, to transform this non-descript modern space in a high rise building into a setting of panache and style. The living room was transformed into a “salon” where linen banquettes face a wall of portraits purchased over the years. Above the banquettes, current artwork by the owner is framed in various frame styles. In the center of the room, a round table draped with a toile de jouy and a linen cloth hosts a collection of vases and artifacts from his travels. A collection of chairs completes the room, including a stone garden seat, a French bergère, and a primitive African chair. One of the bedrooms is now an elegant dining room with a round table surrounded by archaic Chinese pottery and metal ware. A large Flemish tapestry creates a counterpoint to the Chinese objects. On opposite corners of the room, cozy reading seating areas were created to add to the versatility of the space. In the master bedroom, pillows made from antique Flemish tapestry enliven a linen bedspread. A large early 20th century portrait by John de Costa creates a link to the portraits in the living room.

For Decorations Lucullus it’s always about listening to the client, but when the project is a historical property, it is about listening carefully to the spirit of the rooms as well. All style is part alchemy, a bit of conjuring and nerves of steel to accept what is honestly appropriate. These lovely old rooms had lived a very grand past. Miraculously the owner was open to the challenge of trying, just for fun, to see if that past could be recaptured without compromising present-day comforts. We all learned in the process that the old can be as luxuriously commodious as anything the “modern” can promise.

The panels along the lower level of the porch, an area sometimes called the knee wall, are HardiePlank. These wide panels provide a horizontal contrast to the porch’s vertical posts. We wrapped the posts and beams (with the exception of the ridge beam where the rafters come together) in a trim by Boral. This trim material accepts stain and paint better than some other materials. It is also more durable than wood and is resistant to rotting, cracking and splitting.
