The homeowner was having difficulty accessing the shower due to the high step-over height. Aging-In-Place Remodeling installed a barrier free shower that has a fiberglass shower pan with tile walls. A bi-fold shower door was used to increase the entry space. A grab bar, hand held shower head and shower bench were added to safety and accessibility.

The entry to this accessible bathroom is designed to ensure easy access for all users, with a wide, smooth-opening door and a clear, unobstructed path. The spacious entryway allows for a seamless transition into the bathroom, making it user-friendly for those with mobility challenges. The design prioritizes both safety and style, ensuring that all visitors feel welcome in the church’s newly accessible space.

This glass block wall included a decorative tile row through one course of the blocks. In addition a barrier free ready for tile base was used to make this shower handicap accessible as well.

Ms. Homeowner’s townhome Primary Bathroom was a cookie-cutter, builder-grade space that she wanted upgraded and updated. The shower tile was discolored and mildewed; the traditional vanity tile floor and tub deck were also outdated. Our client wanted an accessible bathroom she could age in place in featuring an updated, modern yet timeless and elegant design, with better storage all within a conservative budget. The main challenge in this project was to transform the space and raise the design quotient within the requested budget. We kept the basic footprint, preserved the existing maple doors and trim, saved and re-used the bathtub, purchased a sleek pre-fabricated, vanity which included the countertop and sinks. We reserved some of the budget for high impact items, upgrading fixtures and finishes in every area. We made the shower safer and more visually open by installing a curbless, barrier-free floor, and a frameless glass shower door and panels. We extended the tub deck into the shower area which is a functioning bench and product shelf. We replaced all of the tile, faucets, hardware and accessories with sleek chrome components. A client-requested, high quality commode with a remote controlled Toto washlet seat was installed. The eye-catching color scheme, based on the new vanity and countertop is a balance of rich, dark neutrals paired with crisp whites, bright chrome fixtures, and turquoise wall paint which beautifully coordinates with the existing natural maple doors and trim.

Mike and Stacy moved to the country to be around the rolling landscape and feed the birds outside their Hampshire country home. After living in the home for over ten years, they knew exactly what they wanted to renovate their 1980’s two story once their children moved out. It all started with the desire to open up the floor plan, eliminating constricting walls around the dining room and the eating area that they didn’t plan to use once they had access to what used to be a formal dining room. They wanted to enhance the already warm country feel their home already had, with some warm hickory cabinets and casual granite counter tops. When removing the pantry and closet between the kitchen and the laundry room, the new design now just flows from the kitchen directly into the smartly appointed laundry area and adjacent powder room. The new eat in kitchen bar is frequented by guests and grand-children, and the original dining table area can be accessed on a daily basis in the new open space. One instant sensation experienced by anyone entering the front door is the bright light that now transpires from the front of the house clear through the back; making the entire first floor feel free flowing and inviting. Looking at two different views of this same home (this photo and next), we can see how the grading from the garage area allows step free access to the first floor from the driveway. This approach resulted in a height difference from driveway to front porch of only a few inches. While creating at least one elegant, step free route into a home can be a design, budget, and engineering challenge, when planned from the outset many creative solutions can be applied. Next to the garage door is the cased opening to the gently sloping walkway which ascends to the level of the porch.
