This custom coastal Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) / guest house is only 360 SF but lives much larger given the high ceilings, indoor / outdoor living and the open loft space. The design has both a coastal farmhouse aesthetic blended nicely with Mediterranean exterior finishes. The exterior classic color palette compliments the light and airy feel created with the design and decor inside.

Tucked away behind the primary residence is a tidy and well-lite Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) sporting a full bath and bedroom, and an open-floor-plan living space that leaves plenty of room for the corner kitchen and office nook. The unit features the same quality rift-sawn white oak and Marvin window collection as the main house, creating a homey and elegant small living space.

Adaptability and flexible use are key when adding a small Accessory Dwelling Unit to your backyard. This small 500 SF ADU fits snugly into the yard, providing indoor/outdoor living for residents and guests. Flat roofs combine with a single shed roof for a dynamic form and functionality. The cedar veneer ceiling at the covered porch adds warmth and helps the unit fit seamlessly into the yard.

This accessory dwelling unit (ADU) is a sustainable, compact home for the homeowner's aging parent. Although the home is only 660 sq. ft., it has a bedroom, full kitchen (with dishwasher!) and even an elevator for the aging parents. What is an ADU: Accessory Dwelling Units: An accessory dwelling unit, usually just called an ADU, is a secondary housing unit on a single-family residential lot. The term “accessory dwelling unit” is a institutional-sounding name, but it’s the most commonly-used term across the country to describe this type of housing. While the full name is a mouthful, the shorthand “ADU” is better. ADUs vary in their physical form quite a bit, as there are detached ADU, attached ADU, second story ADU (above garage or work shop), addition ADU, internal ADU. IMPORTANT: There’s simply too few permitted ADUs to make a real difference in the housing stock. But, even if they aren’t going to solve all a city’s problems, they may help homeowners solve some of their problems. Hammer & Hand and architect Kevin Fischer (of Alice Design) and Charlotte Cooney (of Domestic Arts) transformed an exposed and underutilized yard area into a space for entertaining, relaxing, and guest quarters. The team turned an underused detached garage into a stylish and comfortable 480 SF accessory dwelling unit with it’s own patio area.
