“Venetian canal pastel sunset”… I never knew quite where I was going in Venice, but just followed the canal, or became trapped by the canals with no way of crossing and had to backtrack. Probably not the best way to traverse the Venice Lagoon. My last evening in Venice I accidently stumbled on Ponte dei Scalzi, "bridge of the barefoot [monks],” one of only four bridges in Venice to span the Grand Canal. The bridge connects the Sestieri of Santa Croce and Cannaregio. I set up my camera facing east in view of the dome and campanile of Chiesa di San Geremia, which contains the relics of Saint Lucy, the patron saint of our eyes. After taking many images of the descending sun, I decided to follow the sun by way of the church of San Geremia taking a hard left northwest along the Cannaregioa Canal, and taking this photo of the setting sun from the bridge, Ponte delle Guglie. After the sun set, I found my way back to my favorite restaurant, Hosteria Al Vecio Bragosso.

Inspiration for a contemporary living room remodel in New York

This young family of four needed more natural light, more rooms, and a reconfiguration of space inside and out to fully live the life they envisioned. So we opened up the kitchen by removing two walls and created a 16'x20' (2-level) addition, off the back with eight new Marvin windows. We expanded the kitchen footprint, adding custom cabinets and an island with quartz countertops, all bathed in natural light. The addition also created dedicated space for artistic endeavors above, new bedrooms for the girls below, a workout space, and access to new outdoor living. Counting the foyer Chandelier, we added 30 new lights to the home, most being dimmable LEDs. Let there be light! This remodel dramatically changed and improved the lives of these homeowners. That's not a happy accident. That is our mission.

This home office was dubbed the library, due to its built in bookshelves and handsome wood paneling. The client loves textures, and there is an abundance of it here. The desk has a concrete top, the ceiling solitaire fixtures the same. The walls are covered in a rich gray grasscloth from Phillip Jeffries, that warms the room. RL Linen drapery block the glare when needed. A washable rug grounds the room, in case of accidents when snacking at his desk. The room doubles as a guest room, the performance linen covered sleep sofa impervious to spills. It's a great place to curl up with a book and a fluffy throw.

First thing first, we needed to recesses the living area as much as possible without it feeling overwhelming. Natural light from the windows was great, but LED's can make all the difference! We also went with our favorite "Grey" Passive by Sherwin Williams. It's very soft yet modern/transitional. And finally the fireplace; we were initially going to "white wash" the brick, but after priming it (by accident) we decided to go full white with black accents. *The mantle by the way, was $70 at an antique store. This Parisian paradise was designed for a very special young girl. Her Mother contacted Greene Designs looking for someone to create the room her daughter had been dreaming about for years. Due to an accident when she was an infant she has had to endure hundreds of surgeries over her life. When I heard her story I knew she was deserving of something wonderful. Her Mother and I set out to create a room that has a touch of Parisian sophistication (a place they hope to visit soon), and the fun and whimsy of a pre-teen’s room. This bedroom includes a daybed with a trundle perfect for sleepovers, a charming nightstand with a bit of “bling”, a vanity where she can do her makeup, a dresser with a mirror, and a chandelier. The paint and accessories pulled the room together completing the Parisian design. I was so happy to be chosen to design a room for such a fun, sweet, and courageous young lady.
