As part of the full property renovation in the Kerrisdale neighbourhood of Vancouver, the backyard was completely reconfigured to create a larger and more functional outdoor space for the family. An existing detached garage structure was demolished to open up the yard and maximize usable green space for children’s play and outdoor activities. The landscape redesign included grading improvements and the installation of high-quality topsoil to support a healthy new lawn. Clean walkway edges were formed using pressure-treated round-edge wood borders to create a defined transition between the lawn and hardscape areas. By removing the previous structure and rethinking the landscape layout, the renovation transformed the backyard into a spacious, safe, and visually balanced outdoor environment that complements the home’s overall renovation.

This secluded single-family home in Great Falls, had a beautiful backyard setting. The owners recently built a gorgeous pool and surround deck on the right side of the house in their backyard. They inherited a rundown deck off of the kitchen patio doors. Our team designed a two-story outdoor living addition which offers the family everything that they can hope for in outdoor living. Our massive plan required excavation to make the lower level patio both attractive and functional for all kinds of outdoor activity. We excavated down two feet to create a nine-foot high patio, cut concrete walls to add French doors from to dark and unused side of the basement bringing improved use for the basement. The entire back wall was covered with matching brick veneer to entire front and side elevations. The roof of this patio was covered with EPDM roofing rolls to make the lower patio stay dry and protected. Steps away from pool sun deck, this flagstone covered patio turned into a prime space for entertainment. The built-in middle bar equipped with under counter beverage fridge and beer tab to make gatherings more exciting. The side steps built in with matching solid stone threads offered access to driveway and the second floor covered porch. The second floor is finished with porcelain floor tiles, stain grade ceiling panels, wrought iron rails, decorative recessed panel columns, hanging gorgeous ceiling fans steps away from the kitchen. Just outside of this covered porch, there is a deck with the same tile floor facing the pool area offering a breath taking view. Carefully selection of soft toned wood looking plank porcelain tiles compliment the knotty soft grey stain ceiling panels making this project one that shines even on rainy days. The custom-made spiral rod iron staircase offers an elegant second set of steps so that the upper level deck can reach into backyard and pool deck.

Lush Tropical Vegetation: The landscaping incorporates a variety of tropical plants that enhance privacy, beautify the space, and contribute to the overall calming atmosphere of the outdoor environment. Project Goals: The main goals of the project were to: • Visualize the backyard renovation to gain approval from the homeowner’s association. • Facilitate collaboration with the contractor by providing detailed renderings. • Create an aesthetically appealing and functional outdoor living space that meets the lifestyle needs of the homeowners. The 3D renderings successfully encapsulated the vision for the backyard renovation, presenting a harmonious blend of design and functionality. The visualizations served as a critical tool in moving forward with the project, ensuring clarity in communication and direction for all stakeholders involved.

Without increasing the size of the kitchen, we reworked the space to create a family friendly design. This was accomplished by moving the range to the island, adding counter seating and increasing storage with full height cabinetry. The original kitchen featured dark cherry cabinetry with ornate corbels, Tuscan-inspired tile, outdated bronze hardware, and insufficient lighting that made the space feel heavy and visually closed off. While the cabinetry itself was high quality, the clients were unsure whether to paint or replace it and wanted reassurance that their investment would feel timeless. The design solution focused on refinement rather than removal. Existing cabinetry was repainted in a warm neutral tone to immediately brighten the space while complementing the existing stone flooring, and decorative corbels were replaced with simplified profiles to modernize the cabinetry without altering its original construction. Moon Valley quartz countertops established a cohesive palette with subtle warm undertones, while Tuscan-style tile was replaced with classic white subway tile to visually open the space. Patterned tile accents were selectively incorporated at the range and adjacent coffee station, and the range feature was simplified by eliminating the original arch to create a cleaner focal point. Lighting played a critical role in the transformation, with glass and brushed gold fixtures significantly improving brightness and maintaining open sightlines into the adjacent living and dining areas. A new side-by-side refrigerator was custom paneled to match the cabinetry profile, and bulky island seating was replaced with slim-profile barstools upholstered in durable performance materials—supporting an active, family-focused lifestyle. The result is a warm, cohesive transitional kitchen defined by thoughtful restraint, improved function, and lasting appeal.
