Conforming to The Rhode Island Historical Preservation and Heritage Commission’s requirements, our modifications to the existing structure are sympathetic to the original Stuccoed Mission-style and contextually in keeping with neighboring historic homes.
This challenging site presented numerous constraints, including adherence to oceanfront setbacks and environmental and zoning regulations. We overcame imposing restrictions to develop a dynamic plan that fulfilled the clients’ programmatic and aesthetic needs.
The kitchen was identified by our clients as the focal point of family activity. We maximized this lifestyle concept by developing the kitchen into a spacious living area with commanding views of the water. Renovations to the third floor allowed Morpurgo Architects to create an outdoor space offering a panorama of the historic surrounding communities.

The owners of this traditional white Colonial wished to create an open concept. A spacious layout was achieved by removing a wall between the cramped U-shaped kitchen and the under-utilized dining room. Removing the wall provided the open space needed for additional cabinets, as well as a large stone island with seating. The renovated kitchen is far more functional for the homeowner’s modern lifestyle. This was achieved by removing the soffits around the perimeter, which allowed for full height cabinetry and full size appliances. A bench seat was built around the large picture window for taking in views of a well-manicured back yard. Stainless steel appliances, a large farmhouse sink, new hardwood floors, and a serene color scheme give the home the desired charm. A first floor laundry was added to the large remodeled mudroom, creating a multi-functional space for this active family.

After discussing their needs, the design team at Michael Nash Design, Build & Homes developed a plan for a covered porch and a wrap-around upscale deck. Traffic flow and multiple entrances were important, as was a place for the kids to leave their muddy shoes.
A double staircase leading the deck into the large backyard provides a panoramic view of the parkland behind the property. A side staircase lets the kids come into the covered porch and mudroom prior to entering the main house.
The covered porch touts large colonial style columns, a beaded cedar (stained) ceiling, recess lighting, ceiling fans and a large television with outdoor surround sound.
The deck touts synthetic railing and stained grade decking and offers extended living space just outside of the kitchen and family room, as well as a grill space and outdoor patio seating.
This new outdoor facility has become the jewel of their neighborhood and now the family can enjoy their backyard activities more than ever.

Curtis Lumber DelmarThis stunning Transitional kitchen designed by Curtis Lumber Co. gave the homeowners exactly what they desired, a kitchen matching their personal style with an improved layout and more efficient storage.
The built-in pantry was removed and replaced with a pantry cabinet with pull outs, creating space for a much-needed larger refrigerator for this active family of 5. In the space where the refrigerator used to be, double wall ovens were installed.
Removing the soffit allowed for cabinets to reach the ceiling, providing more storage space. They opted for Merillat Masterpiece cabinetry with the Knoxville door style. The perimeter is finished in Dove White and the Island in Midnight. Storage solutions include a mixer shelf, double wastebasket, base roll outs for utensils and spices, sliding bread box and divided utensil drawers. The gorgeous countertop is Sutherland by Cambria. They had space both within and outside the house that were under-utilized and decided to embark on a significant renovation project.
