The owners of this historic house on a promontory surrounded by water asked Morpurgo Architects to maximize ocean views while expanding their home for their growing family. Conforming to The Rhode Island Historical Preservation and Heritage Commission’s requirements, our modifications to the existing structure are sympathetic to the original Stuccoed Mission-style and contextually in keeping with neighboring historic homes. 2013 NARI CAPITAL COTY, MERIT AWARD WINNER, RESIDENTIAL EXTERIOR A family of five living in a Chantilly, Virginia, neighborhood with a lot of improvement going on decided to do a project of their own. An active family, they decided their old deck was ragged, beat up and needed revamping. After discussing their needs, the design team at Michael Nash Design, Build & Homes developed a plan for a covered porch and a wrap-around upscale deck. Traffic flow and multiple entrances were important, as was a place for the kids to leave their muddy shoes. A double staircase leading the deck into the large backyard provides a panoramic view of the parkland behind the property. A side staircase lets the kids come into the covered porch and mudroom prior to entering the main house. Renovators Ltd.: Kitchen Remodel The owners of this traditional white Colonial wished to create an open concept. A spacious layout was achieved by removing a wall between the cramped U-shaped kitchen and the under-utilized dining room. Removing the wall provided the open space needed for additional cabinets, as well as a large stone island with seating. The renovated kitchen is far more functional for the homeowner’s modern lifestyle. This was achieved by removing the soffits around the perimeter, which allowed for full height cabinetry and full size appliances. A bench seat was built around the large picture window for taking in views of a well-manicured back yard. Stainless steel appliances, a large farmhouse sink, new hardwood floors, and a serene color scheme give the home the desired charm.
