Kimberly Chau For this home studio space for a very creative graphic designer and maker, she really wanted an all white space that should could then layer with color. Besides the color, she needed storage, since the room had none built in. So, I designed a built in cabinet that could store lots of art supplies and a large printer. She already had a desk with a birch finish that she wanted to use, so I included a birch counter in the all-white design of the built in to tie both pieces together. We selected the black light fixture and black and white cow print floor tiles for some additional interest. Finally, she layered in lots of color on the shelves and above her desk.

Built in 1925, this 15-story neo-Renaissance cooperative building is located on Fifth Avenue at East 93rd Street in Carnegie Hill. The corner penthouse unit has terraces on four sides, with views directly over Central Park and the city skyline beyond. The project involved a gut renovation inside and out, down to the building structure, to transform the existing one bedroom/two bathroom layout into a two bedroom/three bathroom configuration which was facilitated by relocating the kitchen into the center of the apartment. The new floor plan employs layers to organize space from living and lounge areas on the West side, through cooking and dining space in the heart of the layout, to sleeping quarters on the East side. A glazed entry foyer and steel clad “pod”, act as a threshold between the first two layers. All exterior glazing, windows and doors were replaced with modern units to maximize light and thermal performance. This included erecting three new glass conservatories to create additional conditioned interior space for the Living Room, Dining Room and Master Bedroom respectively. Materials for the living areas include bronzed steel, dark walnut cabinetry and travertine marble contrasted with whitewashed Oak floor boards, honed concrete tile, white painted walls and floating ceilings. The kitchen and bathrooms are formed from white satin lacquer cabinetry, marble, back-painted glass and Venetian plaster. DOWNLOAD NOW   I am still sometimes shocked myself at how much of a difference a kitchen remodel can make in a space, you think I would know by now! This was one of those jobs. The small U-shaped room was a bit cramped, a bit dark and a bit dated. A neighboring sunroom/breakfast room addition was awkwardly used, and most of the time the couple hung out together at the small peninsula. The client wish list included a larger, lighter kitchen with an island that would seat 7 people. They have a large family and wanted to be able to gather and entertain in the space. Right outside is a lovely backyard and patio with a fireplace, so having easy access and flow to that area was also important. Our first move was to eliminate the wall between kitchen and breakfast room, which we anticipated would need a large beam and some structural maneuvering since it was the old exterior wall. However, what we didn’t anticipate was that the stucco exterior of the original home was layered over hollow clay tiles which was impossible to shore up in the typical manner. After much back and forth with our structural team, we were able to develop a plan to shore the wall and install a large steal & wood structural beam with minimal disruption to the original floor plan. That was important because we had already ordered everything customized to fit the plan. We all breathed a collective sigh of relief once that part was completed. Now we could move on to building the kitchen we had all been waiting for. Oh, and let’s not forget that this was all being done amidst COVID 2020. We covered the rough beam with cedar and stained it to coordinate with the floors. It’s actually one of my favorite elements in the space. The homeowners now have a big beautiful island that seats up to 7 people and has a wonderful flow to the outdoor space just like they wanted. The large island provides not only seating but also substantial prep area perfectly situated between the sink and cooktop. In addition to a built-in oven below the large gas cooktop, there is also a steam oven to the left of the sink. The steam oven is great for baking as well for heating daily meals without having to heat up the large oven. The other side of the room houses a substantial pantry, the refrigerator, a small bar area as well as a TV. The homeowner fell in love the with the Aqua quartzite that is on the island, so we married that with a custom mosaic in a similar tone behind the cooktop. Soft white cabinetry, Cambria quartz and Thassos marble subway tile complete the soft traditional look. Gold accents, wood wrapped beams and oak barstools add warmth the room. The little powder room was also included in the project. Some fun wallpaper, a vanity with a pop of color and pretty fixtures and accessories finish off this cute little space. It’s first impression was memorable as immediately after entering the front door, just past the dining table, there was a tree growing in the middle of home! Upon further inspection of the space it became apparent that this home had undergone several alterations during its lifetime... The kitchen was once a space that revealed the home’s layered history. It was evident there had been an addition as the dropped ceiling exposed where garage space had been captured to become part of the kitchen. By re-configuring the layout, we were able to create a gathering area at the peninsula, additional storage space, as well as add a hood fan – something the original space was lacking. Details like the Grand Canal paint colour from Sherwin Williams paired with the vertical grain walnut cabinets create a modern-vintage feel for this kitchen.

We custom designed this plush upholstered headboard, framed in a rich dark wood, to be the focal point of the room. Built in 1949, this Edina home had a strong horizontal presence on the site, but through subsequent renovations the overall massing was lacking clarity and refinement and the entry was diminutive and uninviting. The roof and siding materials were aging, and important interior spaces were cramped and closed in. The house needed better light, better connection internally and out, and exterior updates to clarify and enhance the strengths of the home. The primary design evolved out of a celebration of the existing horizontality of the home and a recognition that a bigger home was not needed. By layering materiality and color, a new identity was created. A new cedar entry canopy slips out from under the previous roof line, extending further towards the street. This added warmth at the entry is echoed along the facade, creating a graceful rhythm and texture. The previous additions were re-clad with a darker material palette in order to anchor and unify the ends of the home. As the grade slopes down towards the back yard, horizontal bands are exposed, revealing the layering top to bottom. Combined, these few shifts in color and materiality allowed for a complete transformation of the home. The interior is reflective of the material and color palette used outside. The main living spaces are opened up and connected while strengthening the original symmetry of the more formal linear alignment of rooms. A whole new kitchen relocates the center of the home and makes more fluid the daily life of this young family. The house is fully transformed inside and out, all without adding more square feet. Not too long ago, I was called up to the harbour town and seaside resort of Ilfracombe, situated on the North Devon coast. Ilfracombe is a historic area within Devon, with the Celts having first settled on its hilly plains during the Iron Age. My client asked me to take a look at a Quarry tiled floor which was in need of a serious amount of cleaning. This largely due to the fact that there were dozens of layers of old sealer on the floor which had been left untouched from many years previously, as well as a significant build-up of general dirt and muck. In order to give this floor a thorough cleaning, I needed to use a strong combination of products, namely NanoTech HBU Remover mixed with Tile Doctor Remove & Go. Nanotech HBU is a heavy build-up remover which uses nano-sized particles to penetrate below tough stains, and lift them out of the stone, whilst Remove & Go is a multi-purpose stripper that provided additional help in removing the many layers of sealer left on the floor. I applied the solution to the floor and left it to dwell for 40 minutes, before using a Polybrush to work it into the Quarry tiles. Since the floor really was in dire need of a deep clean after years of neglect, I also used a black buffing pad attached to a buffing machine, as well as a steam machine to make sure I removed as much of the old sealer and dirt as possible. This was slow and painstaking work, but it was worth it to get the Quarry tiles back to looking their best again. Once this was complete, I rinsed the floor several times before leaving it for a few days to dry before sealing. On my return visit, the floor was dry enough to commence sealing. It was important that the floor was dry and any excess moisture had evaporated because it has the potential to compromise the sealer as it cures leading to unexpected results. My sealer of choice was Tile Doctor Seal & Go, a sealer which is suitable for use on internal unsealed, porous surfaces including textured Quarry, Slate, Victorian tile and several others. I carefully applied several coats allowing each coat to dry before applying the next to provide a subtle low-sheen finish that will help protect the surface from stains in the future. The results were excellent, especially considering that the floor had evidently not been treated to a proper clean for many years.
