She didn’t want to spend a lot of money, knowing that someday her boys will want to change their rooms, but also wanted to create something that they would like now, and could grow in to. She had a Feng Sui expert evaluate the space first. Going off of the expert’s advice, I came up with space plans for each room that adhered to Feng Sui. I designed the rooms based off the boy’s favorite colors. New furniture, custom window coverings, paint and decor were selected to give the boy’s each a special room of their own.

This commercial staircase in Commercial Bay Shopping Centre in Auckland was built for the purpose of structure, rigidity, and functionality. The shopping mall gives out a standard staircase for the retail shops, so Hugo Boss re-designed a staircase to better suit their needs. We were able to reuse the new, 120mm thick, solid concrete treads in order to reduce costs. Because the new staircase was slightly narrower than the original, we trimmed down the treads to accommodate the new dimensions of the replacement stairs. What made this project a challenge was that it was really heavy (the finished stairs weighed about 2 tons) and we had to adhere to pretty strict structural requirements because it’s a commercial staircase. We were able to do the installation in 2 days by getting everything in on the first day, and then having Grant spend a week there with the mini crane lifting up all the steel and placing the treads. The structural materials we used were concrete and steel. Hugo Boss then tiled over top of it, and we finished it off with a brush, stainless steel handrail. We then had to work closely with the glass balustrade company to make sure the holes were in the right place in correspondence with the staircase and that everything ran smoothly and on time.

The Marketing office - Reception , Waiting lounge and M.D. cabin had to be squeezed into an extremely tight volume for our resort in Auroville Pondicherry - The Sprouts. We decided to take advantage of the wooden louvred doors typical to the Architecture of Franco Tamil Architecture of Pondicherry and designed a collapsible full height doors that can close in 2 ways - 1 separating the M.D cabin from the waiting space and - 2 Extending the M.D. cabin with double the seating and room size by closing in the waiting space from the Reception space. The design palette had to again adhere to the concept described already ( read the earlier post ) . The reception desk is a Gunny bag fabric woven metal frame with a simple white duco painted panel with the signage backlit. The Gunny bag is one material that can handle extreme weathering and a natural fabric , it displays both the strength and flexibility - both properties that the brand prefers to showcase as their core values as a brand towards their clientele. The background to M.Ds desk and the desk itself are both adorned by Live edge wooden slabs that speak of the grit that comes with age / legacy . A floating rattan chandelier shaped like a canoe (due to the proximity to beach), all furniture that are inherently wood and rattan, keep the warm grounded theme in place.

Seeing a rising demand for sustainable housing along with rising Carbon emissions leading to global warming, this house strives to show that sensible, good design can create spaces adequate for today’s housing demands while adhering to strict standards. The house was designed to meet the very rigid Passiv House rating system – 90% more efficient than a typical home in the area. The house itself was intended to nestle neatly into the 45 degree sloped site and to take full advantage of the limited solar access and views. The views range from short, highly wooded views to a long corridor out towards the Uinta Mountain range towards the east. The house was designed and built based off Passiv Haus standards, and the framing and ventilation became critical elements to maintain such minimal energy requirements. Zola triple-pane, tilt-and-turn Thermo uPVC windows contribute substantially to the home’s energy efficiency, and takes advantage of the beautiful surrounding of the location, including forrest views from the deck off of the kitchen. What was once a dark, gloomy dining space, has now blossomed into an elegant, glowing dining area. The rich mahogany wood flooring, deep brown shutters, dining table, and buffet were existing to the home prior the K. Rue Designs revamp. These pieces truly shine now with a few adjustments. The chair molding from before was hardly eligible for the title at only 30 inches above the finished floor and was simply painted wood trim pieces adhered to the drywall... To emphasize the grandeur qualities of this home, a 36 inch tall wainscoting was applied to this area and taller baseboards follow through the lower level of the home. For a little depth, grasscloth wallpaper stands above the chair molding. Stunning skirted dining chairs wrap around the existing dining table and contrast with the light area rug. Accentuating the bold shutters are light gold draperies hanging by single rosettes on each side, that puddle to the floor for some drama. The secret weapon for this illuminated dining space are the two 150 watt lamps on the buffet. Even when the lamps are in the off position, the metallic shades are a great detail.
