Our clients had just adopted a baby girl and needed extra space with a full bath for friends and family to come visit (and help out). The garage had previously been converted into a guest room with a sauna and half bath. The washer and dryer where located inside of the closet in the guest room, which made it difficult to do laundry when guest where there. That whole side of the house needed to be converted to more functional living spaces. We removed the sauna and some garage storage to make way for the new bedroom and full bathroom area and living space. We were still able to kept enough room for two cars to park in the garage, which was important to the homeowners. The bathroom has a stand-up shower in it with a folding teak shower seat and teak drain. The green quartz slate and white gold glass mosaic accent tile that the homeowner chose is a nice contrast to the Apollo White floor tile. The homeowner wanted an updated transitional space, not too contemporary but not too traditional, so the Terrastone Star Light quartz countertops atop the Siteline cabinetry painted a soft green worked perfectly with what she envisioned. The homeowners have friends that use wheelchairs that will need to use this bathroom, so we kept that in mind when designing this space. This bathroom also serves as the pool bathroom, so needs to be accessible from the hallway, as well. The washer and dryer actually stayed where they were but a laundry room was built around them. The wall in the guest bedroom was angeled and a new closet was built, closing it off from the laundry room. The mud room/kid’s storage area was a must needed space for this homeowner. From backpacks to lunchboxes and coats, it was a constant mess. We added a bench with cabinets above, shelving with bins below, and hooks for all of their belongings. Optimum Penny wall covering was added a fun touch to the kid’s space. Now each child has their own space and mom and dad aren’t tripping over their backpacks in the hallway! (Clients are waiting to install hardwoods throughout when they remodel the connecting rooms). Everyone is happy and our clients (and their guests) couldn’t be happier with their new spaces! We purposely positioned the stained glass to ensure that when the sun sets that it shines through the glass, giving a beautiful glow to the enclosed room. The gorgeous tigerwood ceiling gives the screened room (12' wide retractable Phantom screen door) an elegant feel, complimenting the stained glass feature. The room features wolf decking, see-through fireplace, circular lounge and black standing seam metal roof. All elements work beautifully together, giving this space that visual “wow”. Steve Kennedy lives in a barn. At least that's where he spends a great deal of time when he's not at work running Kennedy, Inc., manufacturers of sterling silver corporate gifts. After all, that's where he keeps his baby - a 1954 Chevy half-ton, step-side pickup with a short bed and 5-window cab. Steve restores vintage trucks at home in a special building out back - equipped for just that occasion. But don't let the barn boards and beams fool you. As someone who knows the value of high-end merchandise, Steve works on his latest project with the help of Lista drawer storage cabinets. He uses them to store and organize all the parts and tools he needs to keep his truck's 235 cubic inch straight 6 with four-on-the-floor purring like a kitten. This is Steve's country. "We have Lista products in our factory, so I've become accustomed to that level of quality - other products seem like junk in comparison. Lista is the premium product, and when you compare pricing, you appreciate Lista's value." Steve adopted the Chevy truck five years ago. It was solid with minimal rust at the time, but it was sorely in need of a cab-off restoration. Now that it's looking sweet, it gets all the attention almost. "The first thing people look at when they come to the barn is, obviously, the Chevy truck. But right after that, they start staring at the Lista cabinets. They say, 'Oh man, Lista - that's the best!' Kim Quigley joined Roundtree in 2015 as our purchasing director. Kim searches far and wide for the best plants at the best value for all our clients. She loves the hunt involved with making sure we have the perfect plants for all our projects. Kim monitors all the vendors who deliver plants and hardgoods to us and ensures everything is on time and running smoothly. Kim’s roots in the green industry go all the way back to when she was only six years old, when she would spend time at what was then Vickery Florist (now Vickery Wholesale Greenhouse). Her parents were best friends with the founding owners of Vickery. She has fond memories of the greenhouses and spent some time later in her career working in interior plantscaping. Kim has managed landscape installations and worked on the retail side of the horticulture industry. Since 2008 Kim has also designed and installed decorations for the Queen of the Rose Festivals Ball, held during the Tyler rose festival weekend. After spending 22 years running her own corporate special events company in the convention world, Kim decided she missed working in the plant world. She loves plants and the friendly welcoming feel our industry offers and loves balancing operations and logistics. The position with Roundtree felt like the perfect fit. When it comes to her favorite part of her job here at Roundtree, Kim says she loves making such a diverse group of people – both at the company and our clients – happy with their projects by finding the very best plants and features. While she does not get to spend a lot of time face to face with our customers, she is always thrilled to hear customer feedback about how much they love their landscapes. Kim is passionate about building things, working in her yard and her cat Pearl, who she adopted as a stray from the Roundtree office. Because Kim had never had a cat before, only dogs, she said she just went ahead and trained Pearl like a dog. Pearl now responds to commands just like a dog! A fun fact you might not know about Kim: she is a backyard award winning meat smoking master. Kim learned to smoke meat at a young age with her Dad. She feels learning the patience involved with smoking meat helped teach her patience in other parts of work and life. She also loves the friendly competition when at events. Her signature dish? She says it is probably her smoked brisket, but that her bacon wrapped meatloaf is also quite popular.

In My Sister’s Garden-A Wistful Romp through a Drought Resistant Oasis "Spring is the time of the year, when it is summer in the sun and winter in the shade." - Charles Dickens One of the great things about growing up on a farm in the boondocks is that your tribe is your family. We five siblings were as thick as thieves as we climbed trees, worked the fields, pulled fences, drove tractors, branded cattle, and planted the spring garden. We played, we quarreled, and we dug in the dirt together. By the time May arrived, we ached to get our hands grubby in the vegetable patch. Waiting for the vegetables to sprout and be harvested taught us patience and responsibility. Of course, Mom’s beautiful flower gardens would already be abloom by this time of year getting us into constant trouble because we were forever picking bouquets not only for her, but, for teachers, 4-H leaders, and Sunday masses. As we grew into adults, our love of the earth grew as well. Following in the big shoes of my Father, my brother continued the family tradition of being a farmer and has one of the most beautiful vineyards in the county. Our Mother’s love of gardening instructed the gardens of her girls. Recently I walked with my sister Debbie through her eclectic garden. There is a saying that “you can take the girl out of the country, but you can never take the country out of the girl.” With Deb, she’s never left the land where we were born. She is a country cowgirl through and through. She’s always adorned with her cowboy hat, rodeo belt buckle, and boots! She hunts, fishes, grows her food, and would have relished being a pioneer in the 1870’s. Debbie and her husband are the ultimate recyclers and re-purposers. With their barnyard of adopted animals-pigs, goats, donkeys, chickens, even Texas long horns at one time, all the weeds and garden cuttings feed the animals and the manure is then recycled back to the garden. They collect rooftop rain runoff in used wine barrels then pipe it to a storage tank to help with summer watering. It’s never enough, but every drop helps. Their garden art includes rusted plows, wooden swings, a plethora of homemade birdhouses, multiple fountains made from found objects, wagon wheels, antlers, the cutest country chicken coop you ever did see, and a sleeping shed outfitted with a bear hide, antique fishing gear, pinecones, and found treasures of every sort. From their patio they watch the wildlife on their hillside property-deer, bobcats, raccoons, turkeys, skunks, and the occasional mountain lion. It’s a playful, restful garden setting, albeit with a watchful eye for the rattlesnakes that enjoy this oasis as well. What I love about Debbie’s garden is how it reflects her unique personality, her love of the land, and her admiration for the history of the Wild West. As we ambled around the property with her happy dogs in the lead, the songbirds sang, a bevy of butterflies delicately landed on her flowers, and the koi in the pond swam to the surface to greet me. This time together immersed in this sustainable landscape nurtured my soul and brought our childhood memories to vivid life. Although we grow the same plants, shrubs, trees, and succulents in both of our yards, our designs and esthetics are completely different. And that’s the beauty of creating a garden, making it your own special paradise where you can find peace, tranquility, and restoration in tandem with the wild kingdom. TIPS TO CREATING YOUR OWN UNIQUE PLAYGROUND ⎫ Don’t over-think it! Make lists of everything you enjoy in a garden then do it. ⎫ Be conservation conscious as well as considerate of nature. ⎫ Be creative. Think swathes, angles, circles, and flow. There is nothing more boring than a box. ⎫ The hardscape must include natural materials: rocks, gravel, barn wood, shells, or anything meaningful to you. ⎫ Instead of buying art, repurpose childhood toys, old sinks, even a commode overflowing with flowers can be comical. ⎫ Be playful. When you are going to spend time in the outdoors, you want to enjoy yourself. Allow your personality to shine. ⎫ Add surprises, secret gardens, hedged rooms, anything that will enhance the whimsical and magical element to your garden experience. ⎫ Lead to a focal point or view with meandering paths, walkways, and trails. ⎫ Invite the pollinators; bees, butterflies, and birds by providing housing, nectar flowers, protection, fountains, and ponds. ⎫ Mix it up. For a drought resistant garden, consider an array of beautiful succulents, cactus, lavender, bulbs, iris, daylily, geraniums, and other plants that will add color, texture, form, and structure, yet require little maintenance and minimal water. ⎫ A potager, pots, or area designated for edibles and herbs is a must have. There is nothing better than picking your dinner from your own property. ⎫ Benches, swings, lounge chairs, umbrellas, and places to unwind, watch the clouds, savor sunsets, and marvel at the stars make your garden your home. ` What’s so fun about our family gardening experience is the sharing that we all do in giving each other clips, snips, cuttings, bulbs, and volunteers. We grow the same specimens and as we stroll and admire our handiwork, we can’t remember who gave what to whom first. As I said farewell to my sister, she handed me a hand-painted tin filled with blooming echeveria from clippings I had given her a few years before. We shared a laugh. Little did I know this would be the last walk with my sister. She died just a few days before this article was published. She would have loved to have seen her passion in print. For many, the idea of downsizing can be daunting, especially when moving from a spacious rural home to a compact condo. However, our clients were determined to embrace this change to simplify their lives and indulge in waterfront living. With panoramic views of Lake Nepahwin, they were eager to create a retreat maximizing space without compromising style. To optimize space, we adopted a minimalist approach, focusing on multifunctional furniture and clever storage solutions. By strategically placing furniture and incorporating a pantry, disguised as an built-in armoire in the living room, we were able to make the most of every square inch while maximizing the expanse. “Every inch of real estate is valued,” says Lauren Perry “and that is how downsizing becomes a delight.” The original pantry was excessive for the couple, but the primary bedroom was lacking closet space. Enter demolition. We opened a bathroom wall and converted the existing pantry into a walk-in closet for our client’s impressive wardrobe. Prioritizing the built-ins with plenty of drawers customized this space for our client’s personal needs and showcased her impeccable taste in clothes, shoes, and accessories. Every selection had to be carefully considered so the space is inviting, without feeling congested. The fixtures and decor were curated to layer interest, but not detract from the beautiful views of the condo, a delicate balance best left to the professionals.

Tribeca Grand Sofa from Crate & Barrel. Bought a white sofa (covered with a sheet in this photo) before I adopted the Newfoundland dog. I was only going to foster him...hahaha. He stayed and the new sofa got covered up. Sigh. What we do for love. Sort of industrial style metal coffee table that I found on Overstock.com. Very useful when you have an extra large dog that wants to be near you when you're lounging around. I can put my feet on this one with no fear of damaging. No worry with spills either.

Hand chiselled flagstone steps and walls are developing the natural green patina that this type of stone adopts after a few years of weathering. This can be left on, or pressure washed off to reveal its original colour.

This rear addition provides the family with a living area that has lots of natural light for the family to enjoy and relax. The cathedral ceiling creates an open and airy space that is well lit from the side and rear windows. The cathedral ceiling also flows into the washroom. Light is very important to this family and due to the close proximity to the neighbours on either side, fire shutters were required and incorporated on all the side windows. The basement is a finished space with a bar, washroom, family room, and a dedicated room for the family’s adopted cats. Exterior was finished with matching brick that was sourced and still available.
