Arranged around a series of three overlapping courtyards, the building’s primary spaces push and pull to create a wide variety of spatial experiences- solid and void, light and dark, release and compression. Carefully working in close proximity to the heritage oaks, the architecture weaves around and tucks under the sprawling tree canopies. New masonry walls, an extension of the original house, anchor the floating roofs which in turn strategically frame treetop views. A central court, a vestige of the once enclosed sunroom, carves deep into the house, affording each room a unique connection to the outdoors.

Every project presents unique challenges. If you are a prospective client, it is Sunspace’s job to help devise a way to provide you with all the features and amenities you're looking for. The clients whose property is featured in this portfolio project were looking to introduce a new relaxation space to their home, but they needed to capture the beautiful lakeside views to the rear of the existing architecture. In addition, it was crucial to keep the design as traditional as possible so as to create a perfect blend with the classic, stately brick architecture of the existing home.
Sunspace created a design centered around a gable style roof. By utilizing standard wall framing and Andersen windows under the fully insulated high performance glass roof, we achieved great levels of natural light and solar control while affording the room a magnificent view of the exterior. The addition of hardwood flooring and a fireplace further enhance the experience. The result is beautiful and comfortable room with lots of nice natural light and a great lakeside view—exactly what the clients were after.

This midcentury Mackay home underwent a full remodel, expansion, and new landscaping. We retained the footprint of a few existing bedrooms and bathrooms, as well as the original ceiling joists, but updated everything else. This was a multi-year project in collaboration with architect Story Build Design and landscape designers Outerspace Landscape.

White Box – Kitchen and Living spaces
We were asked by our client to remove two walls in order to open the small space that measures 17’ wide by 31’ long. Two simple ideas drove the design; Light and duality of space. Guided by both we started with what we believe is critical to every project – process of discovery.
The proposed design uses white and dominating color for walls, cabinets and the built in bench. Light colored wood floor will add to the light appearance of space shell. As all dividing walls were removed, perimeter walls were charged with functions; linear kitchen, bench next to dining table, and pantry closet. Avoiding upper cabinets allow the design to be open and make use of the wall as a dynamic element –otherwise a monochromatic space. The newly created functional void connects both ends of space and creates what appears to be a larger and brighter spatial experience.
