The Control/Shift House is perched on the high side of the site which takes advantage of the view to the southeast. A gradual descending path navigates the change in terrain from the street to the entry of the house. A series of low retaining walls/planter beds gather and release the earth upon the descent resulting in a fairly flat level for the house to sit on the top one third of the site. The entry axis is aligned with the celebrated stair volume and then re-centers on the actual entry axis once you approach the forecourt of the house. The initial desire was for an “H” scheme house with common entertaining spaces bridging the gap between the more private spaces. After an investigation considering the site, program, and view, a key move was made: unfold the east wing of the “H” scheme to open all rooms to the southeast view resulting in a “T” scheme. The new derivation allows for both a swim pool which is on axis with the entry and main gathering space and a lap pool which occurs on the cross axis extending along the lengthy edge of the master suite, providing direct access for morning exercise and a view of the water throughout the day. The Control/Shift House was derived from a clever way of following the “rules.” Strict HOA guidelines required very specific exterior massing restrictions which limits the lengths of unbroken elevations and promotes varying sizes of masses. The solution most often used in this neighborhood is one of addition - an aggregation of masses and program randomly attached to the inner core of the house which often results in a parasitic plan. The approach taken with the Control/Shift House was to push and pull program/massing to delineate and define the layout of the house. Massing is intentional and reiterated by the careful selection of materiality that tracks through the house. Voids and relief in the plan are a natural result of this method and allow for light and air to circulate throughout every space of the house, even into the most inner core. Next, with a bit of creativity, they modified the existing exterior railing to create a new look that better aligned with the homeowners’ personal taste. After painting the exterior in fresh, cool-toned hues, the crew installed new seamless gutters and downspouts. Over the years as we educate clients around appliances we still work through a rigorous process of programming. Gone is the idea of exposed and oversized appliances. For a busy professional couple less is more, we opted for the a full Miele appliance package for both their #kitchen and #laundry. Loving the new convection steam combi oven where you can steam a duck and brown all in one courtesy of @miele_com. I've seen them cook a 4 course meal for 20 people out of this compact oven. Integrated warming drawer and refrigeration. Much thanks to @caisleydevelopments @somafurniture for helping find solutions around the challenges of seeing how we can install differently. Raising the refrigerator so the freezer drawer can be perfectly aligned with the adjacent warming drawer & countertop line. Raising the hood fan pull out so we could see much better detail and have no exposed trim. And of course flush mount detailing around the gas cooktop so we have minimal raised differences within the working countertop. Soon as gas becomes obsolete we will begin to see induction cooking be standardized until then we try to find ways to incorporate the more traditional means of cooking with gas. Our client presented us with a unique challenge: to craft a modern, open-plan kitchen in the upstairs open space of their new build. They were looking for a space that wasn’t just functional but also acted as a secondary eating area and transitioned smoothly into the living space. We selected Nolte Stone in Basalt, complemented by an accent in Glacier. The Quartz Grey MatrixArt handleless trims equipped with integrated lighting add a touch of modernity, ensuring a sleek finish. A 20mm thick Silestone Gris Expo solid surface worktop was chosen, and we added a Glacier breakfast bar and Basalt table to align with the colour theme. For appliances, we trusted NEFF to deliver on performance, including their single oven, combination microwave, steam oven, induction hob, and gas domino hob. The downdraft extraction was a key addition, ensuring efficiency without the overhead extractor, and we integrated the client's existing American fridge freezer into the design seamlessly. Special touches include a Blanco 1 ½ bowl undermounted sink paired with a Quooker Flex stainless Steel instant boiling water tap. Laminate flooring was laid to ensure longevity and ease of cleaning. To extend the functionality, we constructed a matching Nolte table and seamlessly moved the design into the living space, adding a contemporary sideboard unit and a media unit in the sitting area.
