The design intent for this modest home and garden, located on a tree-lined street in Culver City, was to create a family-friendly, versatile, sustainable outdoor environment that grew with the rapidly changing needs of the owners, their three children and their close-knit community. This became the site of the "Neighborhood Film Festival" where family and friends could settle into the oversized sofa, warm themselves by the outdoor firepit/coffee table, and enjoy a movie under the stars.

An Austin-stone residence in the Greenway Parks North area of Dallas, the backyard was devoid of character with only an outdated wood deck and converted garage studio as features. The owner, a Texas native who had moved back after years in Malibu, California, was referred by his Architect to Landscape Designer Patrick L. Boyd-Lloyd, APLD, with David Rolston Landscape Architects, to maximize the small backyard with feature's he loved from days spent in the year-round outdoor environments he'd become accustomed to: Lounge Pool, with spa jets and heater, Check; Natural-gas Firepit (no smoke here!), Check; Outdoor Screen-wall for viewing Movies, Check; Lounge and Dining Spaces, Check; Lush and Textural plantings, Check. All tied together with a low maintenance Ipe wood Deck and custom cut random rectangle Oklahoma Flagstone.

Design ideas for a modern landscaping in San Francisco.

The clients courtyard was designed to work around the majestic live oak tree and its massive canopy. The fence is edged with Alphonse Karr Bamboo, and the elliptical bed at the foot of the tree showcase a mass planting of wood ferns. The courtyard houses an elongated ipe deck with floating wood and metal stairs. The ipe skirting offers an untraditional, but dynamic and distinct look.

This small garden utilized clean simple lines to create a revitalizing feng-shui outdoor living space. Brazilian slate, artificial turf, and black Mexican pebbles were used on the ground plane, while an IPE bench, Heavenly bamboo, and Alphonse Karr bamboo were used in the vertical plane to create a simple harmonizing variety of materials.
