After numerous add-ons and revisions over its 80-year life, this typical New England residence had ample space but lacked a workable front entry. The project involved designing a new entrance that would lead guests to the front of the house (ensuring that they bypass the kitchen door entry) and expand a mezzanine above the old entry. By creating an arched front door, ATMOSPHERE DESIGN established a strong, clear point of entry; the enlarged footprint allowed the upstairs bath to be expanded. The revised interior walls in this design allowed for the creation of a stunning dressing room that was both spacious and luxurious. The centerpiece of the room was a generous walk-in closet, complete with ample hanging space and custom shelving for shoes and accessories. A full-length mirror provided a functional touch, while the impressive array of built-in cabinets added both beauty and functionality to the space. These cabinets were flanked by wood-framed pocket doors with inset glass panels, which added a touch of elegance and allowed natural light to flow into the space. The craftsmanship of the built-in cabinets is truly remarkable, with every detail carefully considered and executed to perfection. The cabinets are expertly crafted to provide maximum storage and organization, while also adding sophistication to the area.

Recessing the seldom used microwave and extra wine refrigerator under the stair case provides additional functionality in this butler's pantry. The built-in shelving, cabinetry and counter provide ample space for food storage and morning shake prep.

THE SETUP Once these empty nest homeowners decided to stay put, they knew a new kitchen was in order. Passionate about cooking, entertaining, and hosting holiday gatherings, they found their existing kitchen inadequate. The space, with its traditional style and outdated layout, was far from ideal. Engineered cedar siding creates beautiful gray-blue tones at the exterior of the home, while adding a textural element to activate the simple exterior design.

As publishers of multiple local newspapers, the Allens have a deadline-driven schedule and were looking for a low-maintenance, low-carbon place of respite. Coming from a large but dark 1970s suburban home for their blended family, they craved light, openness, and connection to nature. Perched on a wooded north-facing slope overlooking a canal, the site required a design that could balance competing interests for Northern views with ample Southern exposure for light and warmth. The lower south-facing roof also plans for photovoltaic panels, which, when installed, will supply most, if not all of the home’s annual energy needs. With a modest custom-home budget, the design team optimized the architecture for minimal waste and used off-the-shelf products and technologies in creative ways to achieve targets for Passive House air tightness.
