The antiqued or weathered appearance of Brussels Dimensional Stone is a great alternative to expensive natural stone products. These highly adaptable units can be used to build planter walls, steps, specialty features and act as an edge restraint. It’s also appropriate for use as a heavy-duty paver for driveways and areas requiring additional strength.

This project created a singular modern home for clients with two distinct professions; she is an artist; he is a musician. Their directive to Battle Associates was to “design the home of their dreams,” and “make it cool.” As the design evolved, three volumes emerged each with its own individual character. Shapes, materials, and colors reinforced the concept. The “Red Barn” houses a music studio, garage, guest, and children’s bedrooms. The “Industrial” volume is the Art Studio. The “Middle” volume is where the clients live. Each structure has its own set of exterior details, materials, and colors. The three buildings are oriented to maximize views around a man-made pond and a conserved hefty locus tree. Clean, contemporary lines set the tone for the details throughout the project, creating an appropriate environment for displaying artwork. Maple, bamboo, and painted finishes were the predominant palette, complemented with steel and glass for the stairs. Kitchen details favored cut-away pulls instead of hardware. The shell of the entire home was detailed and constructed with a high degree of energy efficiency in mind. Ultra-insulation was the standard with foam panels, triple glazing, and near passive house standards for construction.

Another disaster turned dream complete! This kitchen was constructed and finished the first time with subpar materials, much to the homeowner's dismay. 5 years in it was falling apart. Luckily they found us an we reconstructed everything to original design, but with a few changes. Better quality materials, an appropriate finish product, added protection with metal strips.

This project involved a vast remodel of poorly executed alterations to a smaller kitchen, butler's pantry and laundry areas housed within a historic 1929 residence. Our new design provides an open updated version of a period appropriate kitchen. Details such as arching exterior doors and new windows with matching cremone bolts were added. All cabinetry is our custom design and was fabricated with extensive marquetry, hand carving and special aging to the wood. The highly figured soapstone counters and decorative tiles were hand selected. Furnishings are both antique and new made to order pieces.

This 1990s home needed some updates in key areas of the home. We refreshed the family room mantel with a new profile and designer tile to liven up the living space, then took the home’s multiple bathrooms to a whole new level. In the master bathroom, we took out the builder grade tub and added a sleek soaker tub with more functional his and her vanities. For less maintenance, we used ceramic porcelain tile that replicates the marble the homeowners admired. In a smaller secondary bathroom, the floor is the star of the show and is appropriately complemented by the undulating quasi subway tile revealing subtle variations. We also repurposed their existing vanity and maintained a craftsman feel with clean-lined accessories to stay pristine. The third bathroom embraces simplicity with subtle texture, from the navy concrete looking floors to the unique ombre coloration in the 4×8” shower tile. We kept the overall design simple, leaving all the design details to exude from the variation in the tiles themselves.

Teen Room Design. We used a mix of textures and four different wallpapers on this project to create a subtle graphic effect. We wanted the room to feel playful but elevated, appropriate for tweens entering their teen years

Creating a true great room was a must for this client. By tearing down walls (and putting in appropriate support beams) we opened up not only the kitchen to the living space, but also into the dry bar and dining room, to create a single grand common space. Designed by Black + Vernooy, built by Schatz Homes Designed to accommodate the clients' desire for a house that "sits beautifully and confidently" on its dramatic ridge-top site, the Mirador Residence takes full advantage of the site's natural terracing and sweeping Hill Country views by providing seamless transitions to its generous outdoor living spaces. The plan expresses the owner’s casual lifestyle and need for a variety of spaces strongly connected to the outdoors. Central Texas materials, such as native limestone and aromatic cedar, are chosen for their regional appropriateness and are deployed and detailed in ways designed to further integrate the house with its natural surroundings. The house comprises approximately 5900 square feet of living space wrapped around a hillside courtyard, and was completed in 2005.

We designed and delivered a perfectly hidden kitchen laundry and, can you believe, it adds tremendous style to this new open space Moorestown, New Jersey kitchen?! Besides figuring out what to do with the washer and dryer, the client asked for a large table island, fun green accenting, and wood details. To truly understand the challenge we had with this project, please look at the befores first — a small space condo kitchen that had a stacked washer & dryer fully exposed. Solutions: knock out a wall to open things up to the dining room, and somehow enclose the washer and dryer. Besides now having a tremendously functional open space kitchen with an electic mix of modern and transitional that is ‘perfectly Theresa’, the laundry space now adds style. It’s amazing how the caning on the doors became a statement element! How fun! We truly managed to hide a washer & dryer in plain sight and add beauty!

This midcentury split level needed an entire gut renovation to bring it into the current century. Keeping the design simple and modern, we updated every inch of this house, inside and out, holding true to era appropriate touches.

The master bath is a true oasis, with white marble on the floor, countertop and backsplash, in period-appropriate subway and basket-weave patterns. Wall and floor-mounted chrome fixtures at the sink, tub and shower provide vintage charm and contemporary function. Chrome accents are also found in the light fixtures, cabinet hardware and accessories. The heated towel bars and make-up area with lit mirror provide added luxury. Access to the master closet is through the wood 5-panel pocket door.
