Refined Everyday Living Cabinetry design doesn’t stop at the kitchen. In this Nokesville home, we collaborated with the homeowners to create four thoughtfully designed bathroom vanities — each tailored to its specific space while maintaining a cohesive feel throughout the home. For the guest bath and two master baths, we selected Mantra Cabinetry in solid wood with the Omni door style, finished in Beachwood stain. The warmth of the stain brings softness and approachability to everyday routines, while the clean-lined door profile keeps the look timeless and uncluttered. In the Jack and Jill bath, we introduced contrast with the Omni door style in the Admiral paint option — adding depth and character while still maintaining design continuity. By repeating the same door style across all four spaces, we ensured visual harmony. By varying finish selections, we allowed each bathroom to feel intentional and appropriately scaled to its function. Refinement isn’t about excess. It’s about thoughtful decisions that elevate everyday living.

NYC designer Megan Pflug and her husband J. Penry purchased a 1962 mid-century lodge in Greenville, New York and revived the tired property to become the Woodhouse Lodge. Threading through it all are natural materials reflective of the environment, starting with the soapstone countertops quarried in Virginia and then fabricated on site with nothing more than a steel straight edge, a measuring tape, a wet saw and a few other basic tools. "In decorating the space, we were really interested in working with a lot of local vendors and makers," Pflug said. "I thought it was really cool that we were able to source soapstone from the east coast. I also think that regional materials are often the most appropriate choice. If I was in Santa Fe, maybe soapstone wouldn't make the most sense architecturally." Like Pflug, Hudson Valley based fabricator Anson R. Tollefson, of A.R.T. Restoration and Remodeling, has a background in art. Working with just two slabs of Alberene Soapstone, Tollefson, crafted the countertops, backsplash, shelving and supports. Our client loved the idea of a mid-tone blue paired with the serenity of gleaming taupe and creams. So we decided to design a custom bedding with a variety of faux-silk fabrics and velvets to create a rich and luxurious look.

I love to give old furniture, decor, and what some call, dust collectors...A NEW BEGINNING! So, what better way to adorn this room, than with time and age appropriate furniture! And blend of old and new, makes a timeless statement!

This Prairie Village home has a renovated front entry. The design intent was to be appropriate with the look and feel of a 60 year old home in a mature landscape setting. The new front walk was constructed with re-purposed pavers from their backyard patio. The narrow one car driveway was expanded with an apron of pavers and random flagstone for added dimension, interest and creative detail. A specimen evergreen provides a focal point to the entry and privacy for the screen porch. To enhance the clients existing cobble bed edge, a variety of sizes of cobble and boulders were added to create a retaining border with more dimension, scale and interest.

A classic Seattle craftsman home is reimagined and restored. We cherished the opportunity to help a young couple in Seattle develop a materials, fixtures and lighting package for their beloved home remodel. The master bathroom is layered with a mix of white and black marble hex mosaic floor tile, classic white offset brick pattern subway wall tile, and beautifully crafted wood wainscoting. Kohler's Artifacts plumbing trim collection brings fresh vintage style to the vanity and shower. An easy to care for quartz counter and backsplash adds a bright contrast to the a gorgeous providence blue custom vanity. The powder room which doubles as a guest bathroom is dressed in Pratt and Larson's ceramic mosaic floor tile and paired with a space saving pedestal sink by American Standard. Wall niches lined with white quartz are incorporated into both showers creating a dedicated place to store bathing amenities. The checkboard cork floor in the kitchen adds a FUN pop of personality. Custom mudroom cubbies and a built in eating nook were beautifully crafted and finished in a crisp white paint. Light fixtures by Rejuvenation bathe the room in beautiful period appropriate light. Clever storage hides small appliances and a stand mixer. This project was a labor of love for he homeowners who took an active part in the process and a joy for our team to be involved in! “We could never have envisioned what could be” – Steiner Ranch Homeowner and Client It is an especially fulfilling Project for an Interior Designer when the outcome exceeds Client expectations, and imagination. This remodeling project required instilling modern sensibilities, openness, styles and textures into a dated house that was past its prime. Strategically, the goal was to tear down where it made sense without doing a complete teardown. Starting with the soul of the home, the kitchen, we expanded out room by room to create a cohesiveness and flow that invites, supports and provides the warmth and relaxation that only a home can. In the Kitchen, we started by removing the wooden beams and adding bright recessed lighting. We removed the old limestone accent wall and moved the sink and cooktop from the island on to the countertop – the key goal was to create room for the family to gather around the kitchen. We replaced all appliances with modern Energy Star ones, along with adding a wine rack. The first order of business for the Living Room was to brighten it up by adding more lighting and replacing an unused section with a glass door to the backyard. Multi-section windows were replaced with large no-split glass overlooking the backyard. Once more, the limestone accent was removed to create a clean, modern look. Replacing the dated wooden staircase with the clean lines of a metal, wire and wooded staircase added interest and freshness. An odd bend in the staircase was removed to clean things up. The Master Bedroom went from what looked like a motel room with green carpet and cheap blinds to an oasis of luxury and charm. A section of the wraparound doors were closed off to increase privacy, accentuate the best view from the bedroom and to add usable space. Artwork, rug, contemporary bed and other accent pieces brought together the seamless look across the home. The Master Bathroom remodel started by replacing the standard windows with a single glass pane that enhanced the view of the outdoors. The dated shower was replaced by a walk-in shower and soaking tub to create the ultimate at-home spa experience. Lighted LED mirrors frame His & Hers sinks and bathe them in a soft light. The flooring was upgraded throughout the house to reflect the contemporary color scheme. Each of the smaller bedrooms were similarly upgraded to match the clean and modern décor of the rest of the house. After such a transformation inside, it was only appropriate that the exterior needed an upgrade as well. All of the legacy limestone accents were replaced by stucco and the color scheme extended from the interior of the house to the gorgeous wrap around balconies, trim, garage doors etc. to complete the inside outside transformation.

The original space lacked color and contrast and the furniture was dated and not appropriately sized for the room. It had poor lighting, the bookshelves were cluttered and not organized or used efficiently. We added decorative accents with varying textures, colors and height to fill the spaces. We also added nice wicker baskets for storage. We layered rugs to break up all the browns, we added pillows for pops of color. We added 2 new end tables and a new coffee table to make the space more inviting and balanced

With the high ceiling, wood beams and stunning lighting fixture by the entry the appropriate style for this home will be going Transitional. There will be a mix of pieces with curvature and some others more linear giving it a fresh and clean look. Several of the upholstered furniture pieces will have nail head trims showcasing an elegant and grand look. The color scheme will consist of neutral colors such as ivories and taupe’s with a color pop of olive though out the art and accessories

The landscape around this Mediterranean style home was transformed from barren and unusable to a warm and inviting outdoor space, cohesive with the existing architecture and aesthetic of the property. The front yard renovation included the construction of stucco landscape walls to create a front courtyard, with a dimensional cut flagstone patio with ground cover joints, a stucco fire pit, a "floating" composite bench, an urn converted into a recirculating water feature, landscape lighting, drought-tolerant planting, and Palomino gravel. Another stucco wall with a powder-coated steel gate was built at the entry to the backyard, connecting to a stucco column and steel fence along the property line. The backyard was developed into an outdoor living space with custom concrete flat work, dimensional cut flagstone pavers, a bocce ball court, horizontal board screening panels, and Mediterranean-style tile and stucco water feature, a second gas fire pit, capped seat walls, an outdoor shower screen, raised garden beds, a trash can enclosure, trellis, climate-appropriate plantings, low voltage lighting, mulch, and more!

Boulder flanking patio serves as a seat to pause and check Snapchat before actually engaging with the physical world. California natives and climate appropriate plants keep it wild and old around the perimeter of the concrete patio.

As written in Northern Home & Cottage by Elizabeth Edwards Sara and Paul Matthews call their head-turning home, located in a sweet neighborhood just up the hill from downtown Petoskey, “a very human story.” Indeed it is. Sara and her husband, Paul, have a special-needs son as well as an energetic middle-school daughter. This home has an answer for everyone. Located down the street from the school, it is ideally situated for their daughter and a self-contained apartment off the great room accommodates all their son’s needs while giving his caretakers privacy—and the family theirs. The Matthews began the building process by taking their thoughts and needs to Stephanie Baldwin and her team at Edgewater Design Group. Beyond the above considerations, they wanted their new home to be low maintenance and to stand out architecturally, “But not so much that anyone would complain that it didn’t work in our neighborhood,” says Sara. “We were thrilled that Edgewater listened to us and were able to give us a unique-looking house that is meeting all our needs.” Lombardy LLC built this handsome home with Paul working alongside the construction crew throughout the project. The low maintenance exterior is a cutting-edge blend of stacked stone, black corrugated steel, black framed windows and Douglas fir soffits—elements that add up to an organic contemporary look. The use of black steel, including interior beams and the staircase system, lend an industrial vibe that is courtesy of the Matthews’ friend Dan Mello of Trimet Industries in Traverse City. The couple first met Dan, a metal fabricator, a number of years ago, right around the time they found out that their then two-year-old son would never be able to walk. After the couple explained to Dan that they couldn’t find a solution for a child who wasn’t big enough for a wheelchair, he designed a comfortable, rolling chair that was just perfect. They still use it. The couple’s gratitude for the chair resulted in a trusting relationship with Dan, so it was natural for them to welcome his talents into their home-building process. A maple floor finished to bring out all of its color-tones envelops the room in warmth. Alder doors and trim and a Doug fir ceiling reflect that warmth. Clearstory windows and floor-to-ceiling window banks fill the space with light—and with views of the spacious grounds that will become a canvas for Paul, a retired landscaper. The couple’s vibrant art pieces play off against modernist furniture and lighting that is due to an inspired collaboration between Sara and interior designer Kelly Paulsen. “She was absolutely instrumental to the project,” Sara says. “I went through two designers before I finally found Kelly.” The open clean-lined kitchen, butler’s pantry outfitted with a beverage center and Miele coffee machine (that allows guests to wait on themselves when Sara is cooking), and an outdoor room that centers around a wood-burning fireplace, all make for easy, fabulous entertaining. A den just off the great room houses the big-screen television and Sara’s loom— making for relaxing evenings of weaving, game watching and togetherness. Tourgoers will leave understanding that this house is everything great design should be. Form following function—and solving very human issues with soul-soothing style.
