JDBG is wrapping up work on an expansive 2-story sunroom addition that also included modifications to the existing home’s interior and significant exterior improvements as well. As we delved deeper into our client’s overall objectives, it became clear that this would be no ordinary sunroom addition. The resulting 16’x25’ sunroom is a showstopper with 10’ high ceilings and wall to wall windows offering expansive views of the surrounding landscape. As we recommend with most addition projects, the process started with our Preliminary Design Study to determine project goals, design concepts, project feasibility and associated budget estimates. During this process, our design team worked to ensure that both interior and exterior were fully integrated. We conducted in-depth programming to identify key goals and needs which would inform the design and performed a field survey and zoning analysis to identify any constraints that could impact the plans. The next step was to develop conceptual designs that addressed the program requirements. Using a combination of 3-D massing, interior/exterior renderings, precedent imaging and space planning, the design concept was revised and refined. At the end of the study we had an approved schematic design and comprehensive budget estimates for the 2-story addition and were ready to move into design development, construction documentation, trade coordination, and final pricing. A complex project such as this involves architectural and interior design, structural and civil engineering, landscape design and environmental considerations. Multiple trades and subs are engaged during construction, from HVAC to electrical and plumbing, framers, carpenters and masons, roofers and painters just to name a few. JDBG was there every step of the way to ensure quality construction. Other notable features of the renovation included expanding the home’s existing dining room, incorporating a custom ‘dish room,’ and providing fully conditioned storage and his & her workrooms on the lower level. A new front portico will visually connect the old and new structures and a brand new roof, shutters and paint will further transform the exterior. Thoughtful planning was also given to the landscape, including a back deck, stone patio and walkways, plantings and exterior lighting. Idaho Boat Docks - Floating Docks Boat docks are the newest addition to the Butte family of maintenance free products. Boat docks are offered in two different styles. Traditional construction uses an ACE float, pressure treated wood substructure, and a maintenance free composite top. ACE floats have foam cores encased by hard plastic and are approved by the Army Corp of Engineers. ACE floats have a 15 year warranty. The wood substructure is assembled using galvanized steel corners and angles. All bolts are metal to metal connections. This Master Bathroom in Norfolk received a complete gut, expansion and renovation. Through our Design Build process these homeowners worked with in-house designer Jason Hoffman to create their dream master bathroom retreat. When designing, Jason was able to offer ideas on how to gain square footage, ultimately adding a walk-in shower. Complete with a custom double vanity and beautiful tile work by Marshall Tile & Marble Company, this has been one of our favorite transformations to date. Our talented carpentry crew and trusted subcontractors perfectly executed a design on paper to a well laid out, oasis retreat.

The P+M House is a new infill home for a family of four in Saskatoon’s Varsity View neighborhood. Constructed of daylight, natural wood, and human interaction, it strives to create a rich, family-focused environment that pulls nature and ever-changing sunlight into the heart of the house. Situated at the doorsteps of President Murray Park and the U of S campus, the home opens to the South, affronting an established street while allowing a row of towering American elms to provide natural shading and focus to the interior spaces. The house is divided into four program zones: public, private, parents, and kids. The internal organization is a direct result of a daylight management concept, where dark-craving spaces are condensed and allocated to areas with low-light access, while providing strategic separation between zones. Left behind as a result are airy, light-filled living spaces that offer internal / external views, space for family interaction, while taking maximum advantage of limited South and West light. The architecture begins with a main floor sectional shift that breaks the house into front & back, creating an internal topography that lets South light reach the back of the house. A trio of continuous, interlocking walls then give shape and order to the primary spaces, while openings in or between these walls extend the interior spaces into the yard and let daylight wash the heart of the house. The highly-insulated house is the result of a thoughtful process that sought to leverage the site’s severe environmental constraints (minimal southern exposure in an extreme cold climate, where temps reach 40 below) and turn them into opportunities. The house is composed of a 2800 sf main house, a 650 sf basement suite, and a 600 sf garage. It is constructed of reinforced concrete, 2x staggered stud walls, exposed spruce posts / glulam beams, and open-web engineered wood trusses. It is clad in stucco and western red cedar; with triple-glazed fiberglass windows and natural white oak finishes throughout. Modular prefab construction offers great advantages in quality control and speed of delivery. Our challenge was to get the most done in the factory while providing an airtight, thermal-bridge-free enclosure and owner-approved finishes.
