The homeowners came to us looking to update the kitchen in their historic 1897 home. The home had gone through an extensive renovation several years earlier that added a master bedroom suite and updates to the front façade. The kitchen however was not part of that update and a prior 1990’s update had left much to be desired. The client is an avid cook, and it was just not very functional for the family.
The original kitchen was very choppy and included a large eat in area that took up more than its fair share of the space. On the wish list was a place where the family could comfortably congregate, that was easy and to cook in, that feels lived in and in check with the rest of the home’s décor. They also wanted a space that was not cluttered and dark – a happy, light and airy room. A small powder room off the space also needed some attention so we set out to include that in the remodel as well.
See that arch in the neighboring dining room? The homeowner really wanted to make the opening to the dining room an arch to match, so we incorporated that into the design.
Another unfortunate eyesore was the state of the ceiling and soffits. Turns out it was just a series of shortcuts from the prior renovation, and we were surprised and delighted that we were easily able to flatten out almost the entire ceiling with a couple of little reworks.
Other changes we made were to add new windows that were appropriate to the new design, which included moving the sink window over slightly to give the work zone more breathing room. We also adjusted the height of the windows in what was previously the eat-in area that were too low for a countertop to work. We tried to keep an old island in the plan since it was a well-loved vintage find, but the tradeoff for the function of the new island was not worth it in the end. We hope the old found a new home, perhaps as a potting table.

The kitchen, often considered the heart of the home, is a space where functionality and aesthetics coalesce. Among the myriad choices homeowners face when designing or renovating their kitchens, selecting a suitable kitchen splashback is crucial. In recent years, glass splashbacks have emerged as a versatile and universally appealing option. This article delves into the reasons why a glass kitchen splashback is suitable for everyone, blending seamlessly with diverse preferences, lifestyles, and design aesthetics.
Versatility in Design
One of the key factors that make glass kitchen splashbacks universally suitable is their versatility in design. Glass offers a neutral and timeless aesthetic, effortlessly complementing various interior styles, from modern and minimalist to classic and eclectic. Whether your kitchen embodies a sleek, contemporary vibe or a rustic, traditional charm, a glass splashback seamlessly integrates into the design landscape.
Furthermore, the transparency of glass allows it to adapt to any colour scheme or pattern in the surrounding space. Whether you prefer bold and vibrant hues or a more subdued palette, a glass splashback can be customised to match your preferences, making it an ideal choice for homeowners seeking design flexibility.
Enhanced Perception of Space
Glass has a unique ability to create an illusion of space and openness in a room. This quality is particularly beneficial for smaller kitchens or those with limited natural light. A glass kitchen splashback reflects sunlight, making the space brighter and more expansive. By enhancing the perception of the room, glass splashbacks contribute to an overall sense of airiness and openness, creating an inviting atmosphere that suits various home sizes and layouts.
Easy Maintenance and Hygiene
Practicality is a paramount consideration in kitchen design, and glass splashbacks excel in ease of maintenance and hygiene. Unlike porous materials such as tiles or grout, glass provides a smooth, non-absorbent surface that is easy to clean and maintain. Spills and splatters can be effortlessly wiped away with a damp cloth, ensuring a hygienic and sanitary kitchen environment.
The non-porous nature of glass also prevents mould and bacteria growth, making it a suitable choice for families with young children or individuals with allergies. The low-maintenance aspect of glass makes it a universally appealing option for those who value a clean and sanitary kitchen without the hassle of extensive upkeep.
Durability and Longevity
Glass kitchen splashbacks are known for their durability and longevity. The tempered glass commonly used in splashbacks is heat-resistant, ensuring it can withstand the rigours of a busy kitchen without compromising its integrity. This durability makes glass splashbacks suitable for households with avid home cooks who frequently use high-temperature cooking techniques.
Moreover, the longevity of glass ensures that it remains a sustainable and cost-effective choice over the long term. Unlike some materials that may wear out or become dated, a well-maintained glass splashback retains its aesthetic appeal and functionality for years, making it an investment that stands the test of time.
Customisation Options
Personalisation is a crucial aspect of home design, and glass kitchen splashbacks offer various customisation options. From selecting the colour and pattern to incorporating personalised designs or digitally printed images, homeowners can tailor their glass splashbacks to reflect their style and preferences.
The ability to customise glass splashbacks makes them suitable for everyone, allowing individuals to express their creativity and personality in the heart of their homes. Whether you opt for a bold, statement-making design or a subtle, elegant finish, the customisation options inherent in glass splashbacks ensure a perfect fit for diverse tastes.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the universality of glass kitchen splashbacks lies in their ability to seamlessly integrate into various design styles, enhance the perception of space, offer easy maintenance and hygiene, exhibit durability, and provide many customisation options. As a versatile and timeless choice, glass splashbacks cater to homeowners' preferences and practical needs across different demographics.
Whether you reside in a compact urban apartment or a spacious suburban home, whether your aesthetic leans towards modern minimalism or classic elegance, a glass kitchen splashback is a fitting and universal solution. Its adaptability to different lifestyles and design preferences positions it as a versatile and enduring element in the ever-evolving kitchen design landscape.

In the world of high-end interior design, luxury is no longer simply defined by opulence or grandeur. True luxury is increasingly characterized by personalization—the ability to tailor a space to the unique tastes, preferences, and lifestyles of its inhabitants. At KKD Studio, we believe that personalized luxury interiors transcend mere aesthetics; they represent a deeper connection between the individual and the space they occupy. This article explores the significance of personalization in luxury interiors and how KKD Studio approaches the art of creating bespoke living environments.
Redefining Luxury through Personalization
Traditionally, luxury interiors were often associated with extravagant materials, large-scale furnishings, and the latest trends. While these elements still play a role in high-end design, today’s discerning homeowners seek something more meaningful: a space that is a reflection of their identity, values, and lifestyle. Personalization goes beyond selecting furnishings and décor—it involves designing an environment that feels authentic, comfortable, and perfectly aligned with the individual’s personal narrative.
At KKD Studio, we view luxury as a deeply personal experience. We understand that a truly luxurious space must speak to the desires and aspirations of those who live within it. Our approach to personalization is rooted in the belief that every design choice, from the layout to the color palette, should resonate with the unique sensibilities of our clients.
Understanding the Client's Vision
The first step in the art of personalization is understanding the client’s vision. At KKD Studio, we engage in an in-depth consultation process to explore the personal preferences, lifestyle, and cultural influences of each client. This collaboration forms the foundation of the design, ensuring that every element of the space reflects the homeowner’s personality and aspirations.
We take the time to listen carefully to our clients’ needs—whether it’s a passion for modern art, a love for traditional craftsmanship, or a desire for sustainability in the design process. By delving into the details of their lives, we are able to craft interiors that are not only visually stunning but also meaningful and functional. Personalization, in this sense, is a creative exploration of the client's story, interests, and values.
Customization: The Heart of Personalization
Customization is at the core of personalized luxury design. While many luxury designs may incorporate high-end furniture and materials, at KKD Studio, we believe that true luxury is found in bespoke elements that are specifically crafted for the space and the client. Customization can manifest in various ways, from creating one-of-a-kind furniture pieces to selecting unique materials that reflect the client's aesthetic and functional needs.
Each design decision we make is guided by the desire to create a space that feels distinctly personal. Whether we are designing a custom-built bookshelf, selecting rare textiles for upholstery, or incorporating unique art pieces, the goal is always to enhance the individuality of the space. Our team works closely with skilled artisans and craftsmen to bring these bespoke designs to life, ensuring that each piece is tailored to perfection.
Blending Functionality with Aesthetics
While personalization in luxury interiors often emphasizes aesthetics, it is equally important to prioritize functionality. A personalized space should not only be beautiful but also practical, designed to support the everyday needs of its inhabitants. At KKD Studio, we understand that luxury is about creating a harmonious balance between form and function.
Whether it’s designing a home office that fosters productivity, a living room that encourages relaxation, or a kitchen that combines state-of-the-art technology with a warm, inviting atmosphere, we ensure that every personalized design serves a purpose. We work with our clients to understand how they live and interact with their space, ensuring that the final design supports their lifestyle while maintaining an elegant and cohesive look.
Creating Emotional Connections through Design
At its core, personalization in luxury interiors is about creating spaces that resonate emotionally with the homeowner. A well-designed, personalized space has the power to evoke feelings of comfort, joy, and belonging. At KKD Studio, we recognize the importance of this emotional connection and strive to craft environments that make our clients feel truly at home.
From the selection of materials to the placement of art, every design decision is made with the intention of creating a space that feels welcoming and reflective of the client’s identity. Personal touches—such as family heirlooms, custom-designed furniture, or carefully curated art collections—further enhance the emotional connection, making the space feel deeply personal and uniquely theirs.
At KKD Studio, we believe that the art of personalization is what truly defines luxury interiors. By deeply understanding the needs and desires of our clients, we create bespoke environments that are not only visually stunning but also meaningful, functional, and deeply connected to the individual’s personal narrative. As we continue to embrace innovation and craftsmanship, personalization remains at the heart of everything we do, ensuring that each luxury space we design is a true reflection of the people who live within it.

In the realm of luxury interior design, the layout and placement of furniture are as important as the pieces themselves. How we arrange our furniture within a living room not only dictates the flow and functionality of the space but also significantly influences its aesthetic and emotional impact. In this article, Krish Kothari delves into insights of how the arrangement of furniture is akin to composing a symphony, further discussing that every piece must work in harmony with the next to create an environment that exudes both elegance and comfort.
The Philosophy of Furniture Placement
At its core, furniture placement is about balance—striking the perfect equilibrium between form and function. In luxury interiors, this requires a considered approach where each piece of furniture serves both a practical and aesthetic purpose. "A well-placed chair or sofa can transform the way a room feels," Krish explains. "It’s not just about where furniture goes, it’s about how it interacts with the architecture, the light, and the people who use the space."
Luxury living rooms are often grand and spacious, but with such expansiveness comes the challenge of creating intimacy without sacrificing elegance. This is where thoughtful furniture placement comes into play. By organising the room in zones—whether for conversation, relaxation, or entertainment—one can create a dynamic space that feels inviting yet refined.
Creating Flow Through Placement
One of the most important principles of furniture placement is creating a natural flow. In a luxury living room, the arrangement should guide movement effortlessly, ensuring that the space feels open and accessible. Krish emphasises the importance of this flow, stating, "Furniture should never obstruct movement; it should invite you into the space, guiding you seamlessly from one area to the next."
The placement of larger furniture items, such as sofas and armchairs, should be oriented in a way that encourages interaction without compromising the overall balance of the room. For example, arranging seating around a central focal point—whether it’s a fireplace, a piece of art, or a panoramic view—creates a sense of coherence and invites conversation. At the same time, leaving enough space between furniture ensures that the room feels airy and uncluttered, a key element in luxury design.
Defining Zones for Living
In large living rooms, furniture placement can be used to define different functional zones within the same space. By thoughtfully arranging seating, tables, and accessories, designers can create distinct areas for lounging, socialising, and even working, without the need for physical partitions. Krish often approaches luxury living rooms as multi-functional spaces, where zoning through furniture allows for different activities to coexist in harmony.
For example, a seating area arranged around a coffee table may serve as the social heart of the room, perfect for entertaining guests, while a pair of armchairs positioned by a window could create a quiet nook for reading or reflection. The key is to ensure that each zone feels connected yet distinct, maintaining a flow that is both functional and visually appealing.
Achieving Balance Through Symmetry and Asymmetry
Balance is a fundamental aspect of luxury design, and furniture placement plays a pivotal role in achieving this balance. While symmetry can lend a sense of order and formality, asymmetry often adds interest and dynamism to a space. Krish notes, "It’s about finding the right balance between harmony and contrast, where the placement of each piece contributes to the overall rhythm of the room."
In formal living rooms, symmetrical arrangements—such as placing matching sofas or armchairs on either side of a central coffee table—can create a sense of grandeur and refinement. On the other hand, asymmetrical layouts, such as an off-centre arrangement of furniture or the strategic use of statement pieces, can inject a modern, relaxed feel into the space, adding depth and intrigue.
Layering with Accessories
While furniture forms the foundation of a luxury living room, the careful layering of accessories—such as rugs, lighting, and artwork—adds the finishing touch to a well-curated space. Rugs, in particular, play a critical role in anchoring furniture and creating visual zones within the room. "A rug should never feel like an afterthought," Krish suggests. "It should be chosen with the same care as the furniture itself, both in terms of texture and scale."
Lighting, too, plays a crucial role in enhancing the arrangement of furniture. By using a combination of overhead lighting, floor lamps, and accent lights, designers can create depth and highlight key areas of the room. A well-placed floor lamp beside an armchair not only serves a functional purpose but also adds to the room's aesthetic by introducing layers of light and shadow.
Comfort as a Key Element
Above all, furniture placement in a luxury living room must prioritise comfort. While aesthetic appeal is essential, the space must also be inviting and livable. "Luxury is about creating a space that not only looks beautiful but feels comfortable," Krish explains. The positioning of furniture should foster an environment where people can relax, engage, and feel at ease.
Comfort is achieved not just through the selection of plush, high-quality furniture but also through the thoughtful placement of each piece. Sofas should be positioned to take advantage of natural light, chairs should be placed at convenient distances from tables, and all seating arrangements should encourage conversation and interaction.
The Future of Furniture Placement in Luxury Design
As living spaces continue to evolve, so too does the approach to furniture placement. The future of luxury interiors will likely see a greater emphasis on flexibility and adaptability, where furniture can be easily rearranged to suit different occasions or changing lifestyles. Modular furniture, for instance, is gaining popularity in luxury homes, offering the ability to reconfigure seating arrangements to meet the needs of the moment.
Ultimately, the art of furniture placement is about more than just positioning pieces within a room—it is about creating a living environment that balances style, comfort, and functionality. By approaching furniture placement as an integral part of the design process, we can craft luxury living rooms that are not only visually striking but also deeply personal and profoundly comfortable.

In the ever-evolving realm of interior design, minimalism has become the star of the show, celebrating the charm of simplicity and the power of space. Negative spaces are in turn voids or quiet partners in a composition, where emptiness becomes a design element in its own way. By embracing the artful absence of clutter, spaces would not only look sleek and stylish but also expansive and inviting.
In this article, Ar. Jamshed Banaji, Principal Architect at Banaji & Associates delves into the art of reimagining negative spaces, uncovering how these design techniques can elevate the essence of a home to new levels of elegance and harmony.
Less is More
At the heart of minimalism lies the principle of "less is more," an approach that transforms simplicity into sophistication. Picture a modern living room where a single, sleek sofa is poised gracefully in an expanse of open space, surrounded by walls that invite light to play freely. This isn’t about stripping away essentials but rather about creating a setting where each element is given its due prominence. By allowing space to be as much a part of the design as the furnishings themselves, every piece finds its voice in a visually compelling dialogue.
The Art of Holistic Minimalism
Holistic minimalism is the secret sauce that merges the principles of minimalism with the strategic use of voids, turning ordinary spaces into sophisticated retreats. Imagine a living room where a streamlined sofa sits elegantly amid an open expanse, with walls that unobtrusively allow natural light to flood the space. This design philosophy isn’t merely about removing clutter; it’s about celebrating the interplay of space and light to highlight each element’s elegance. The essence of holistic minimalism lies in giving each component room to breathe, creating an environment where simplicity and sophistication coalesce seamlessly.
Symphony of Balance
Designing with balance is akin to composing a symphony, where each note and pause contributes to the overall harmony. Effective use of negative space creates a delicate equilibrium between elements, ensuring that each piece of furniture and decor interacts fluidly with its surroundings. This balance transforms a room into a visually pleasing sanctuary, where every detail contributes to a cohesive and inviting atmosphere. By orchestrating this dance of space and elements, designers craft environments that are not only aesthetically striking but also inherently comfortable and engaging.
Embracing the negative space
The advantages of employing negative space in interior design are manifold. It promotes a sense of openness and tranquillity, making spaces appear larger and more serene. It enhances the visual impact of each design element, allowing them to stand out against a backdrop of deliberate emptiness. However, this approach does come with its challenges. It requires a keen eye for detail and a meticulous approach to ensure that the voids are as thoughtfully considered as the furnishings themselves. Missteps can lead to a space feeling stark or incomplete, underscoring the need for a balanced application of this technique.
Simplicity to serenity
In embracing the philosophy of minimalism and the nuanced use of negative space, we find not just a design aesthetic but a pathway to a richer way of life. This approach encourages a mindful interaction with our surroundings, creating a congenial aura and clarity within the home.
By celebrating the elegance of emptiness and the strategic placement of elements, we foster environments that are visually stunning as well as deeply nurturing. As our homes evolve into harmonious retreats, they reflect a broader commitment to simplicity and intentional living, ultimately enhancing our overall well-being and quality of life.
