JUMA architects were contacted for the interior design of a shell-state apartment on the coast. The structural construction, the plastering, the floor screed and the technical fittings (heating ducts, plumbing, electricity and ventilation) of the apartment had already been realised. It soon became apparent, however, that the assignment could not be limited to the interior decoration only, as the placement of kitchen, bathroom and dressing room in the existing plan turned out to be entirely impractical. More extensive renovation work was needed to meet the needs of the customer. The structure of the unit was therefore slightly adjusted to make the bathroom and dressing larger and more functional. Also, the living room was dominated by a huge radiator that drew all the attention. To solve this problem, new pipes were laid to accommodate an integrated heating element in the sideboard. Gas pipes were fitted in the kitchen for the gas cooker which JUMA included in the design as a real eye-catcher. The sinks, in contrast, were given a more discreet placement. Light oak parquet was selected for the floors throughout the apartment. The natural appearance of the wood gives all the rooms a warm feel. The built-in furniture was custom made and is finished in black satin lacquer to contrast the light-coloured wood. The dominant colour palette is deliberately kept very simple and neutral and is complemented with light grey tones and colour accents. The colour choice was in fact inspired by a beautiful picture of the coast. The freestanding furniture and overall decorations were also selected or designed by JUMA architects. The arrangement of the seating area is very playful and atypical. JUMA did not want to put in a couch that would divide the space in two. The composition is meant to create a very open ambiance. These Buncombe County homeowners were looking for a fun, postmodern space to host friends and family on their restful 40-acre mountain retreat, which includes their main home, a studio, and a cottage. With the assignment of two complete exterior and interior renovations for the ancillary quarters, The Hands of Sean Perry Co. got to work transforming the studio and cottage spaces into the getaway of this owner’s dreams. Both structures received major upgrades, including refinishing the existing textured stucco for a smoother, clean aesthetic and also installing Americana thermally modified ash siding, custom built-in furniture, storage solutions and zinc roofing throughout. Built into a hillside, the studio needed additional drainage support to prevent water from collecting against the foundation. To ensure its structural integrity for years to come, the team built a J drain mat into the walls and tied it into the floor system under the concrete slab. In the cottage, the crew completed extensive renovations, including a new ladder and rail loft area — the perfect nook for cozying up to read on a rainy afternoon.

Kristina Arnold is a relatively new addition to the Roundtree Landscaping team. Kristina has a passion for landscaping and the outdoors, with a keen focus on native plants and learning about landscape design. Kristina is the only woman on an all man landscape maintenance crew and keeps up with everyone when it comes to all types of work, from mowing to loading! Kristina focuses on the detailed aspects of horticultural plant maintenance to keep our clients properties looking their absolute best. You may not always be aware of all the fine-tuning Kristina provides when it comes to plant care, but if you would certainly notice if her handy work was missing. Before Kristina joined Roundtree, she worked in several different fields, including the restaurant industry and retail. With a desire to educate herself about landscape design and to work in the landscaping industry, Kristina decided to take the opportunity to meet with Roundtree owner, Johnette Taylor, at a local meet-and-greet at North Haven Gardens. After a great first meeting, Kristina was later hired on as a part of horticultural services to learn the ropes of landscape maintenance and plant care. As a part of the Roundtree team, Kristina continues to educate herself with the goal of pursuing a degree in landscape design or landscape architecture. Kristina feels it is important to always keep learning and loves taking classes that help her advance her knowledge and skills. She is currently studying to become a certified landscape association with TNLA (Texas Nursery and Landscape Association). What’s Kristina’s favorite part of her job? Detailed plant pruning. She loves working with overgrown plants to transition them from ragged or untamed into beautiful landscape specimens. Her favorite plant (at the moment) is pink magenta Cosmos. She loves the graceful stems and orderly – yet flamboyant – flower petals. Fun fact about Kristina: She is a big fan and follower of all the National Food Days. In fact, if you ask her, she will tell you there are only three days out of the year that are not assigned to a specific food! The day of this interview was National Gingerbread Day, and Kristina was excited about the upcoming applesauce cake and chocolate ice cream days!

New kitchen absorbs the old butlers pantry in order to create a larger kitchen with more storage. Plumbing and appliances were re-assigned to new locations.

THEME The main theme for this room is an active, physical and personalized experience for a growing boy. This was achieved with the use of bold colors, creative inclusion of personal favorites and the use of industrial materials. FOCUS The main focus of the room is the 12 foot long x 4 foot high elevated bed. The bed is the focal point of the room and leaves ample space for activity within the room beneath. A secondary focus of the room is the desk, positioned in a private corner of the room outfitted with custom lighting and suspended desktop designed to support growing technical needs and school assignments. STORAGE A large floor armoire was built at the far die of the room between the bed and wall.. The armoire was built with 8 separate storage units that are approximately 12”x24” by 8” deep. These enclosed storage spaces are convenient for anything a growing boy may need to put away and convenient enough to make cleaning up easy for him. The floor is built to support the chair and desk built into the far corner of the room. GROWTH The room was designed for active ages 8 to 18. There are three ways to enter the bed, climb the knotted rope, custom rock wall, or pipe monkey bars up the wall and along the ceiling. The ladder was included only for parents. While these are the intended ways to enter the bed, they are also a convenient safety system to prevent younger siblings from getting into his private things. SAFETY This room was designed for an older child but safety is still a critical element and every detail in the room was reviewed for safety. The raised bed includes extra long and higher side boards ensuring that any rolling in bed is kept safe. The decking was sanded and edges cleaned to prevent any potential splintering. Power outlets are covered using exterior industrial outlets for the switches and plugs, which also looks really cool.

Our clients returned to their home in Burke, Virginia, after renting it during military assignments. Their outdated and cramped kitchen did not work for their busy family. They turned to FA Design Build to redesign the look and layout of the space. Originally, the space was a breakfast nook, a small U-shaped kitchen, and a garage entryway. By removing a framed pantry, bulkheads, and walls, we opened the space the length of the house. The result is an open concept room that serves as the hub of the home. The design incorporates stained cherry cabinetry, Armstrong Vivero luxury vinyl floor, and quartz countertops -- all ideals choices for beauty and low maintenance living.

Amber works from home and was sacrificing a dining room for her home office. By utilizing the double wide closet space in her guest bedroom, she now walks into her home without the reminder of work, and can have guests over for a meal in her dining room (dining room reveal coming soon). The walls were freshly painted Sea Salt by Sherwin Williams. This gives the room a fresh, clean look and also adds contrast to the beige carpet. Amber had her homework assignments cut out for her as she had to do some major purging in her throw all guest room. Once she started letting go, she was on a roll and continually surprised me as she cleaned out closets throughout the house. One dresser was filled with cds, dvds, books, albums, scrap-booking materials; items taking up precious real estate in her life that she didn't even know were there. There really wasn't a storage problem after-all, she was just holding on to a collection of things that no longer served her. Each time I would visit, and her space would become more open, I could see the weight lifting off her and her self love building. Amber had a recent breakup with her boyfriend and this makeover helped her not only focus on making a home sanctuary for herself, but helped her let go of the pains of the past and focus on the exciting future ahead. At one point when we were moving sofas in the living room (which we will also reveal soon), we found an ex's flip-flop. We were figuratively and literally sweeping away the past. Editing your home and your life makes room for your future; for new people and things. We are so happy to finally reveal the room to you! We can't wait to unveil the rest of Amber's home, once we complete the finishing touches. Challenges: Amber's home was filled with mix-matched furniture from family and college. She had no idea what her decorating style was. After shopping together and exchanging somepinterest boards, I was finally able to get a sense of what she loves. I had to work on a tight budget, which meant really digging out the creativity and utilizing other items in the home. We wanted to save the closet doors in the event she sold her home or no longer needed an office someday. There wasn't any extra space to store these closet doors, so I used them as a headboard. The only items purchased were: Curtains, Curtain Rod, Bedspread Set, Throw Pillows, 2 Lamps and Paint.

design: Carrie Preston (Studio TOOP) and Jasper Helmantel (Cruydt Hoeck), 2011 location: Appeltern, NL status: built in 2012 by Appeltern Model Garden Complex photos: Olga van Saane, October 2013 Designed as assignment from both the Dutch gardening magazine Groei & Bloei and the television and radio nature program Vara's Vroege Vogels, this garden serves as a model of how homeowners can incorporate lots of plant life and wildlife into the design but without sacrificing practicality or aesthetics. The garden is deliberately contemporary in its style to emphasize that nature-rich gardens need not look a certain way - insects and birds don't care if the lines are straight or curved. At the same time the garden makes use of affordable, simple, no-nonsense materials. The 40x60 cm paving stones are one of the most common and affordable paving options in the Netherlands, available en masse for free on the Internet. Conceptually we imagined a garden completely paved with the tiles (as to many gardens are) and what would happen if took out some of these stones, used them to build benches and structure and added plants where the tiles had been. In the construction of the benches we include other materials such as bamboo sticks and insulation bricks that create habitat for insects such as solitary bees. The plant palette is based on a selection of native and host plants in combination with the 26 plants plan set up by Groei & Boei -- a list of plants aimed at making the use of more plants in gardens accessible and less intimidating. The choice for the number 26 corresponds with the number of letters in the alphabet in line with the famous Dutch garden designer Mien Ruy's comment that if we only need 26 letters to create a whole language, we should be able to combine and mix 26 plants to express far more than we think.

The harps stand at attention awaiting their next assignment. In the past this space was a porch on the side of the farmhouse. Remnants of beams and columns from those times are still apparent.

The building's standard finishes were all in place when our client closed on the 2,000 sq. ft., two bedroom condo, then handed us the key and departed for another continent on a year‐long business assignment. With his approval, we established a warm, rich, brown and copper‐toned color palette to compliment what already existed. And it suited the owner’s Trump Tower lifestyle. Carpet and draperies softened the hollow echo created by floor to ceiling windows, wood flooring and other hard surfaces. Renae Lillie

My client wanted bold colors and a room that fueled her children’s creativity. We transformed the old storage space underneath the staircase into a playhouse by simply adding a door and tiny windows. On one side of the staircase I added a blackboard and on the other side the wall was covered in a laminate wood flooring to add texture completing the look of the playhouse. A custom designed writing desk with seating to accommodate both children for their art and homework assignments. The entire area is designed for playing, imagining and creating.
