Inspiration for a dining room remodel in Providence

SOLD CONDO: Unit #3 - This 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom condominium is distinguished by its size and floor plan. The Formal Living Room, with cherry-finish floors, has crown molding, a decorative fireplace, and an adjacent Sun Room. The formal Dining Room has a bay window. The kitchen features stainless steel appliances, granite counters and custom cabinetry. The Master Suite includes an en-suite bathroom with a spa tub, a walk-in closet, and a private Sitting Room. Basement storage locker. Two assigned parking spaces are located in a gated parking lot behind the building. In-unit washer and dryer are included. This top floor unit overlooks the historic Mansions of Kingsbury Place and Washington Terrace.

Our goal was to create a concept for the client using an assigned space that would resemble a mountain stream. From concept to completion, the entire project was designed and installed by us. Our expectations were high for finishing on time and for the overall aesthetic value of the area. The client also demands quality and for construction that is completed on-time. The end result was a walk-up pond complete with waterfall and natural landscaping using local rock, boulders and native plants, useable kayaks, and water filled with colorful koi. From any angle, both large and small bits of a natural water feature and surrounding rock and plants were viewable. However, irezumi is the term generally assigned to traditional tattoo covering large parts of the body, going as far as the typically Japanese ‘integral tattoo’, which covers the body like a second skin. Japanese tattoo patterns are influenced by traditional art, popular stories and religion.

There is a dreamy quality about this stunning Federal period-style Charlottesville home that mentally transports one to faraway lands of blissful relaxation. Our studio preserved this romantic ambience by paying careful attention to detail in every room. We carefully assigned perfect spaces for the client’s treasured antiques and decor items. The foyer is a definitive highlight of the home, where the walls are faux-painted with continuous exterior views of the incredible mountains in the distance of this stately home. CAD Rendering for this incredibly stylish apartment interior was an exciting project for us. Potential of the design was obvious – we knew from the first glance at the technical assignment that whoever the clients are – they are extremely lucky.

My clients have a beautiful, contemporary villa. They wanted to redecorate their living room. The set-up of their furniture was not practical. Because of the sofa with the chaise-longue they could only sit comfortable with 3 people. My assignment was to add enough furniture so that they were able to sit in the living room with, at least, 4 people. The persons on the couch and/or lounge chair had to be able to reach the salon table. The living room had to be more cozy. Mood Interieur proposed to keep the beautiful B&B Bend Sofa and add another element. We checked with B&B Italia if they could guarantee the color. Furthermore, Mood Interieur advised a lounge chair, a salon table and a beautiful pot to separate the lounge corner from the rest of the living room. Here's the result.

design: Carrie Preston (Studio TOOP) and Jasper Helmantel (Cruydt Hoeck), 2011 location: Appeltern, NL status: built in 2012 by Appeltern Model Garden Complex photos: Olga van Saane, October 2013 Designed as assignment from both the Dutch gardening magazine Groei & Bloei and the television and radio nature program Vara's Vroege Vogels, this garden serves as a model of how homeowners can incorporate lots of plant life and wildlife into the design but without sacrificing practicality or aesthetics. The garden is deliberately contemporary in its style to emphasize that nature-rich gardens need not look a certain way - insects and birds don't care if the lines are straight or curved. At the same time the garden makes use of affordable, simple, no-nonsense materials. The 40x60 cm paving stones are one of the most common and affordable paving options in the Netherlands, available en masse for free on the Internet. Conceptually we imagined a garden completely paved with the tiles (as to many gardens are) and what would happen if took out some of these stones, used them to build benches and structure and added plants where the tiles had been. In the construction of the benches we include other materials such as bamboo sticks and insulation bricks that create habitat for insects such as solitary bees. The plant palette is based on a selection of native and host plants in combination with the 26 plants plan set up by Groei & Boei -- a list of plants aimed at making the use of more plants in gardens accessible and less intimidating. The choice for the number 26 corresponds with the number of letters in the alphabet in line with the famous Dutch garden designer Mien Ruy's comment that if we only need 26 letters to create a whole language, we should be able to combine and mix 26 plants to express far more than we think.

The Belmont's study is a serene and inspiring space designed for productivity and focus. Large windows allow abundant natural light to fill the room, creating a bright and inviting atmosphere. The white walls provide a clean and fresh backdrop, promoting a sense of calmness and clarity. A sturdy wooden desk takes center stage, offering ample workspace for tasks, projects, or study sessions. Its natural beauty adds a touch of warmth and elegance to the room. Whether it's tackling work assignments, diving into research, or indulging in creative pursuits, the Belmont's study provides the ideal environment to stimulate concentration and creativity. The combination of natural light, white walls, and a well-crafted wooden desk creates a harmonious blend of aesthetics and functionality, ensuring that the study is a space where ideas can flow freely and work can be accomplished with ease.

On this remodel project the homeowners asked us to give the interior a contemporary face-lift that would to beautifully compliment their impressive contemporary art collection AND also feature a very large salt water fish tank (2 ft deep, 3 ½ft high x 5ft long) in the middle of the kitchen, cleanly integrating it with the cabinets, appliances, and other kitchen features. We custom designed a LEICHT kitchen in neutral whites and grays which formed the perfect clean canvas for the tropical fish, as well as the bold and colorful contemporary paintings throughout the home. Including a large fish tank in the kitchen was a fun and unique assignment for us to handle. The biggest challenge was to create the actual space for the fish-tank. To do this we had to reconfigure walls and go into the adjacent dining room. The sheer weight of such a large volume of water was another challenge. Photo by Studio Europa Inc.

Same dor the bilateral side tables that we snuck into the design as a surprise feature for our customers. In this tiny south end condo (topping out at 465 sq ft!) all details had to be carefully considered and every nook and cranny not only assigned a single function - but many!

Inspiration for an exterior home remodel in Providence

design: Studio TOOP, 2009 location: Amersfoort, NL status: built in 2009, Tuinvreugd photo: Jolanthe Lalkens, 2010 A family friendly garden that, doesn't look like, well, a family garden. That was the assignment. Clean lines, a modern feel, not too much work, enough space for the kids to play and, oh yeah, a cage for the rabbit all in a space less than 50 m2. The new extension on the back of the house, catty cornered slightly with the original facade and the garden boundaries brought it's own challenges. This diagonal was used to make extra space for different functions but "straightened" in the experience of the inner square. Inside the aluminum pergola (coated in the same gray - ral 7016 - as the woodwork on the extension) house various functions: the rabbit cage, a water and sand table, the swing (steel rod in the aluminum for extra support) and a table where the kids can draw or play table football.
