Designed and completed in the fall of 2010, this Zionsville residence was a new home without an existing outdoor living space. The BPI design team was given the assignment to create an outdoor living space using a blank slate. The owners wanted a multifunction space to get away from their busy lives. The design team created a space that included a covered patio with a pergola, a built in kitchen and entertaining bar, a gas fire pit, seating walls, plantings for seasonal interest and outdoor lighting to enhance the space in the evening hours. The finished space is truly a stunning example of the thought and details that went into creating the project.

Erik Grammer Photography - I recently came across a post on Facebook with a photo of an elderly couple with a quote saying "We were born in a time when if something was broken we would fix it, not throw it away..." This quote resonated with me. I found myself thinking of it while working on the same house - for the fourth time. I affectionately call this beautiful Southern California beach house the Humpty Dumpty home. I started a wonderful business relationship with one of my favorite clients back in 2003. Initially, I was called in to "fix" and finish what another designer started. Once completed and with everything just so, the couple unfortunately divorced and amicably divided the art, rugs and furnishings. I was hired for a second time to recreate each room as close as possible to replace all items that were missing. The house was happily restored back to the original design and all was well for a few years. My client relocated to the East Coast for a temporary job assignment and the house was rented to a person (whose name I can't say) from a famous all-girl band. During this time there was a problem with the upstairs laundry room and water damage occurred. I was hired for the third time to help repair and update (ever so slightly) some areas in the house. My client requested to keep the design and feeling of the house intact because he loved it so much. A few years passed before a pipe broke in the master bathroom while the new renter was out of town on vacation. Unfortunately, things like this do happen - and if not attended to quickly, major damage can occur. In this case, nearly the entire house was flooded requiring it to be completely gutted and stripped down to the floorboards and studs. In January of this year, I was hired to help the client, the insurance company, and the contractor put the house back together again. But unlike the Humpty Dumpty story, this house has actually been put back together again - several times over. Although, this house and client have experienced some challenges, I say this is a perfect example of design success. My client has had many opportunities to change and create something new in his environment with every mis-adventure. Instead, he realizes his home is exactly the way he likes it. It has been such an honor to work with this man who is definitive, trusting, and confident enough to create (or re-create) the perfect home that "fits" his personality and lifestyle. Although this Humpty Dumpty home has been good for my business, I hope the next project with this client is to decorate another property - perhaps a New York City Apartment!

My clients have a beautiful, contemporary villa. They wanted to redecorate their living room. The set-up of their furniture was not practical. Because of the sofa with the chaise-longue they could only sit comfortable with 3 people. My assignment was to add enough furniture so that they were able to sit in the living room with, at least, 4 people. The persons on the couch and/or lounge chair had to be able to reach the salon table. The living room had to be more cozy. Mood Interieur proposed to keep the beautiful B&B Bend Sofa and add another element. We checked with B&B Italia if they could guarantee the color. Furthermore, Mood Interieur advised a lounge chair, a salon table and a beautiful pot to separate the lounge corner from the rest of the living room. Here's the result.

These Buncombe County homeowners were looking for a fun, postmodern space to host friends and family on their restful 40-acre mountain retreat, which includes their main home, a studio, and a cottage. With the assignment of two complete exterior and interior renovations for the ancillary quarters, The Hands of Sean Perry Co. got to work transforming the studio and cottage spaces into the getaway of this owner’s dreams. Both structures received major upgrades, including refinishing the existing textured stucco for a smoother, clean aesthetic and also installing Americana thermally modified ash siding, custom built-in furniture, storage solutions and zinc roofing throughout. Built into a hillside, the studio needed additional drainage support to prevent water from collecting against the foundation. To ensure its structural integrity for years to come, the team built a J drain mat into the walls and tied it into the floor system under the concrete slab. In the cottage, the crew completed extensive renovations, including a new ladder and rail loft area — the perfect nook for cozying up to read on a rainy afternoon.

We’re happy to collaborate and contribute to a variety of projects. Our team worked with Towne Tree and Landscaping of Milton and Classic Masonry of Braintree on an assignment for Milton Academy in Milton, Massachusetts. In order to deliver a Steel Fence to perfect specifications for the client, we removed an antique railing, restored it and re-installed it. Also, we fabricated and installed two other railings for an existing staircase by duplicating a design in the panels. It was certainly a job well done by everyone involved! Amber works from home and was sacrificing a dining room for her home office. By utilizing the double wide closet space in her guest bedroom, she now walks into her home without the reminder of work, and can have guests over for a meal in her dining room (dining room reveal coming soon). The walls were freshly painted Sea Salt by Sherwin Williams. This gives the room a fresh, clean look and also adds contrast to the beige carpet. Amber had her homework assignments cut out for her as she had to do some major purging in her throw all guest room. Once she started letting go, she was on a roll and continually surprised me as she cleaned out closets throughout the house. One dresser was filled with cds, dvds, books, albums, scrap-booking materials; items taking up precious real estate in her life that she didn't even know were there. There really wasn't a storage problem after-all, she was just holding on to a collection of things that no longer served her. Each time I would visit, and her space would become more open, I could see the weight lifting off her and her self love building. Amber had a recent breakup with her boyfriend and this makeover helped her not only focus on making a home sanctuary for herself, but helped her let go of the pains of the past and focus on the exciting future ahead. At one point when we were moving sofas in the living room (which we will also reveal soon), we found an ex's flip-flop. We were figuratively and literally sweeping away the past. Editing your home and your life makes room for your future; for new people and things. We are so happy to finally reveal the room to you! We can't wait to unveil the rest of Amber's home, once we complete the finishing touches. Challenges: Amber's home was filled with mix-matched furniture from family and college. She had no idea what her decorating style was. After shopping together and exchanging somepinterest boards, I was finally able to get a sense of what she loves. I had to work on a tight budget, which meant really digging out the creativity and utilizing other items in the home. I transformed a table from the discard pile into this faux marble bedside table (click web link for more details). Amber's dad was able to help with the desk materials and building to cut costs. We wanted to save the closet doors in the event she sold her home or no longer needed an office someday. There wasn't any extra space to store these closet doors, so I used them as a headboard. The only items purchased were: Curtains, Curtain Rod, Bedspread Set, Throw Pillows, 2 Lamps and Paint. Those power cords in the closet were unsightly and we didn't have the patience to wait to drill a hole under the desk (Another task for Amber's dad). Solution: I found a large frame and extra fabric and made a quick pin board. I used the same fabric to cover the harsh black mouse pad.

New kitchen absorbs the old butlers pantry in order to create a larger kitchen with more storage. Plumbing and appliances were re-assigned to new locations.

This was the second phase of an extensive remodel for this Ham Lake family, so from the outset the design team knew they needed to compliment what had been done in the lower level, bringing some of those elements to the main floor above while achieving other goals. In the lower level we had all but eliminated the influence of the honey oak, which was overwhelming the space devoted to entertainment, replacing it with an ebonized treatment of the trim and cabinetry. “The homeowner had two concerns in this second phase, explains McKenzie Pederson, the Murphy Bros. Design Build Consultant assigned to the project. “The honey oak had to go as it did in the lower level, and a rather large wall that stopped you as you entered the home had to go too. That opened up the whole space,” explained McKenzie. In this second phase, we created a very large custom island, refurbished the fireplace, which had failed, in a new lighter stone, added a hand-scrapped flooring throughout the entire level, updated the pantry and laundry and the powder room. The staircase was recreated in block rod iron and red oak to carry forward the scheme from the lower level. “The homeowners were driven by a strong need to make this home their own and that meant some very specific surface selections and colors,” recalls McKenzie. She really liked earth tones and patterns with lots of movement. You can see that in the granite she chooses. It is huge (122”) was about as large a single piece as you can have and featured a custom hand-hewn 60-degree bevel. Most are 45 degrees. “I think this remodel is a perfect example of the new “forever home” trend,” says McKenzie. People realize they can remodel to please themselves and not just for resale value. That whole return on enjoyment idea is what’s at play here.”

This monochromatic mid-century modern living room showcases a coastal design without going overboard. The warm rustic woods in the trays, shelves and coffee table mimic the colors found on the beach. A guest room pulls inspiration from the pines out the window and large artwork sets a calming tone in the son’s room. Building a Dream: the Creation of a Wine Cellar A dream house is more than walls and a roof, it is a place full of things that you love. When David Rabin got the chance to build the house of his dreams, it wasn’t enough to simply use stone instead of brick or wood instead of tile. He had to fill it with people and things he loved. So, as a passionate collector of wine, he set out to build a custom wine cellar. He had never built a wine cellar before and had his reservations. He wondered what it would take to make it beautiful, a place where he could store cases of wine as well as proudly show off special, trophy bottles. “One of my biggest worries, though, was space,” said David. “We knew we wanted a wine cellar, and that we wanted it to be gorgeous, but we had no idea where it would be or if we even had the space for one.” Glenview Haus had already given David his custom, wooden entry door and was ready to create a high-quality wine cellar that was customized to fit his vision. David recalls with awe how helpful the team at Glenview Haus was when approaching the project he assigned them. “What the team at Glenview Haus did was designate space, and then worked to maximize the space for ultimate storage and efficiency,” said David. “We were nervous that the smaller space would eliminate our ability to make it beautiful. But the team at Glenview Haus was able to work with our interior designer to make it absolutely stunning.” Wine Cellar Cooling System By installing a state-of-the-art cooling system that automatically keeps the cellar at the ideal temperature and humidity level, Glenview Haus was able to create the ideal wine cellar environment. The team helped David choose from a variety of furniture-grade wood species, that they could handcraft so as to add all the detail that would help make David’s wine cellar uniquely designed. Glenview Haus’ team also collaborated with the interior designer to create the perfect atmosphere for David’s custom wine cellar. Wine Cellar Craftsmanship Glenview Haus designed a see-through glass entry system, to protect and show off the extensive collection of wine. Inside they helped create a masterpiece, from floor to ceiling. The team brought in brick veneers for the walls to complement the stained Mahogany horizontal display, and that gave the entire cellar a rustic feel. A textured, painted ceiling completed the look, contributing to the incredible, other-worldly feel. David’s artisan, custom wine cellar did exactly what he dreamed it would do and transported all visitors to a vineyard on the Italian countryside. “The team constructed us a space to hang a landscape painting of a vineyard,” said David. “This painting, along with all of the other amazing design elements give viewers looking into the cellar the feeling that they are outside looking into something that you’d imagine would only exist in Italy.” Glenview Haus helped David create a wine cellar that not only had ample storage but that was customized and designed to meet his ultimate vision.
