To improve storage and increase counter space near the range, the refrigerator was relocated in favor of a shallow pantry cabinet.
Andrea Rugg Photography

I built this on my property for my aging father who has some health issues. Handicap accessibility was a factor in design. His dream has always been to try retire to a cabin in the woods. This is what he got.
It is a 1 bedroom, 1 bath with a great room. It is 600 sqft of AC space. The footprint is 40' x 26' overall.
The site was the former home of our pig pen. I only had to take 1 tree to make this work and I planted 3 in its place. The axis is set from root ball to root ball. The rear center is aligned with mean sunset and is visible across a wetland.
The goal was to make the home feel like it was floating in the palms. The geometry had to simple and I didn't want it feeling heavy on the land so I cantilevered the structure beyond exposed foundation walls. My barn is nearby and it features old 1950's "S" corrugated metal panel walls. I used the same panel profile for my siding. I ran it vertical to match the barn, but also to balance the length of the structure and stretch the high point into the canopy, visually. The wood is all Southern Yellow Pine. This material came from clearing at the Babcock Ranch Development site. I ran it through the structure, end to end and horizontally, to create a seamless feel and to stretch the space. It worked. It feels MUCH bigger than it is.
I milled the material to specific sizes in specific areas to create precise alignments. Floor starters align with base. Wall tops adjoin ceiling starters to create the illusion of a seamless board. All light fixtures, HVAC supports, cabinets, switches, outlets, are set specifically to wood joints. The front and rear porch wood has three different milling profiles so the hypotenuse on the ceilings, align with the walls, and yield an aligned deck board below. Yes, I over did it. It is spectacular in its detailing. That's the benefit of small spaces.
Concrete counters and IKEA cabinets round out the conversation.
For those who cannot live tiny, I offer the Tiny-ish House.

- added clerestory windows above the new kitchen to accentuate the new vaulted ceiling line and create a greater visual continuation of indoor to outdoor space
- drastically increased the access to natural light by increasing window sizes and opening up the floor plan
- placed natural wood elements throughout to provide a calming palette and cohesive Pacific Northwest feel
- incorporated Universal Design principles to make the home Aging In Place ready with wide hallways and accessible spaces, including single-floor living if needed
- moved and completely redesigned the stairway to work for the home’s occupants and be a part of the cohesive design aesthetic
- mixed custom tile layouts with more traditional tiling to create fun and playful visual experiences
- custom designed and sourced MCM specific elements such as the entry screen, cabinetry and lighting
- development of the downstairs for potential future use by an assisted living caretaker

The Logan Arts Building plays a role in strengthening community identity in one of the oldest and culturally significant neighborhoods in San Diego. Much of the industrial infrastructure in the area that supports the Port and Naval Base have evolved over time into an arts community. The Logan Arts Building will be a place for many of those artists to create and share their works. A paseja conserves a mural along the property line and provides light and access to the rear of the property.
The studios were carefully oriented and designed to optimize the lighting conditions for artwork. Subtle and diffused light is drawn in from the north for greater color control. High level lighting, wall space, and large storage spaces are incorporated to assist the tenants in creating their best work.

A modern, accessibility-focused bedroom designed with both comfort and function in mind. The integrated ceiling lift system provides safe and seamless mobility throughout the space, following a fully installed track that blends cleanly with the room’s minimalist aesthetic. Soft white walls and warm light-oak floors create an inviting backdrop, complemented by a muted green upholstered bed and simple contemporary furnishings. Large artwork, minimalist lighting, and understated décor give the room a calm, elevated feel, while wide pathways and uncluttered circulation support ease of movement. Natural light fills the space through the generously sized window, grounding the modern design with a warm and restful atmosphere.

The homeowner of this beautiful new home in Parker, Colorado wanted to bring a personalize flare with reverence to their Christian faith into their home. R2S designers and structural engineering partner set out to first structurally enhance the load-bearing wall and floor with three micro LAM beams in the basement joists to support more than 1,000 lbs of added weight to the proposed faux chimney. The decorative chimney would include new framing, sheathing and tile that would add more than 1,000 lbs. of weight to the wall/floor. Never a company to take risks, R2S employed the assistance of certified engineers at Infinity Consulting Group in Denver. ICG drafted a certified plan to added support underneath the proposed structure and R2S successfully built and certified the planned support.
From their we set out to realize the homeowner's dream which resulted in the exquisitely planned and finished custom work you see in this photo. The decorative beams (5), custom backlit crucifix , television, chandeliers and electronic fireplace were all part of the project; as was finishing floor trim and paint.
The homeowner was thrilled with the finished project and they have since received rave reviews from family and friends for the enhancements we made to their home.

Open Air Outdoor Cabinetry is one of our favorite companies to work with. They will assist in laying out the correct cabinets and sizes. You can add any accessory, such as, refrigerators, grills, trash bins, etc.
This Open Air Outdoor kitchen was installed on a raised deck using porcelain tile. There were no extra supports needed to hold the outdoor kitchen. We installed OutDeco panels attached to a steel frame behind it for privacy from the neighbors deck. We chose a natural stone counter top from a local stone dealer. We measured and they cut a beautiful piece of limestone for it.

C.H. Burnham Inc., in partnership with Ciaran Rafferty Construction, completed this four car garage in Pacific Heights in early April, 2010. From precision excavation and shotcrete construction to the installation of marble slabs and plaster cast egg and dart trim, this project demanded expertise in every aspect of construction. Completed in both a timely matter and on budget, you will see in the following photos, our crews, with the assistance of Mulholland Electric, West Cork Welding, Hughes Plastering, Fong’s Plumbing & Fire Protection, and VBE Inc., efficiently executed a complex project.

Before we could begin excavation for the garage, we needed to dig three 20′ deep underpinnings by hand beneath the 1906 home’s existing foundation. After we had successfully supported the home and installed the temporary shoring, we brought in expert excavator Billy Vaughn, owner of VBE Inc. Considering we were building up to both the western and eastern property lines, we excavated, formed and erected the walls in stages so as to not place the neighboring structures or the workmen in any unnecessary danger. After the walls and spread footers were complete, we poured a 10″ thick slab roof. While the roof slab cured, we installed the tapered sleeper joists for the deck. We then removed the supports for the roof slab and poured the slab floor.

Once we completed the concrete phases of construction, we moved onto the finish stages of the project. This included the installation of an ipe’ deck, a hand rail matching the existing railing on the third floor deck and six piece trim detail. After visiting several marble suppliers, we found a carrera marble that matched the existing steps (installed over 100 years ago) and polished/antiqued the materials accordingly. A few more elements, including a cement tiled entryway and a custom garage door, completed the integration of the new structure with the existing home. After cleaning the property and touching things up, we received the certificate of occupancy.

This ADA-accessible bedroom offers a wide, unobstructed layout designed around mobility, safety, and independence. The ceiling-mounted lift system is seamlessly integrated into the room’s modern design, providing smooth transitions and enhanced caregiving support. Expansive windows frame lush natural views, filling the space with calming daylight that elevates the atmosphere. Warm natural-oak engineered hardwood floors add richness and durability, while crisp white walls and modern trim maintain a clean, contemporary feel. Built-in cabinetry with shaker-style drawers provides functional, accessible storage without cluttering the open layout. Every detail—from the open floor movement paths to the integrated lift track—creates a space that is both highly functional and beautifully designed for accessible living.
