HOMEREDI was commissioned to create a large kitchen for a young couple in the heart of Manhasset. We called on A Direct Distributor's expertise to assist our client in designing a fully commissioned kitchen with all the modern amenities available. The original floors were tile and we seamlessly installed wood flooring in this kitchen and married it to the adjacent hallway and dining room without a need for any threshold or saddles. The free standing Hood and all the modern appliances were supplied to our client through our distributors at All Shore Appliance in Port Washington. The wooden subfloor was inspected, cleaned and prepared prior to this beautiful Tobacco Pine Wood flooring being installed. A coat of a premium moisture barrier was applied directly to the subfloor, we used our prefer method of installation of a nail/glue assist method. We finished the flooring using a commercial grade finish for additional durability. The stairs received the same process and were stained True Black for an intentional look.

This kitchen is personality packed; as unique as the homeowner. Civil war era trusses, soapstone counters, distressed painted wood cabinetry, massive island, hand crafted and painted terra cotta back splash tiles, and pine plank flooring all serve to fashion a kitchen for baking cookies with the kids, preparing huge holiday meals, and hanging out with the family! The Owners of a home that had been consumed by the moving dunes of Lake Michigan wanted a home that would not only stand the test of aesthetic time, but survive the vicissitudes of the environment. With the assistance of the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality as well as the consulting civil engineer and the City of Grand Haven Zoning Department, a soil stabilization site plan was developed based on raising the new home’s main floor elevation by almost three feet, implementing erosion studies, screen walls and planting indigenous, drought tolerant xeriscaping. The screen walls, as well as the low profile of the home and the use of sand trapping marrum beachgrass all help to create a wind shadow buffer around the home and reduce blowing sand erosion and accretion. The Owners wanted to minimize the stylistic baggage which consumes most “cottage” residences, and with the Architect created a home with simple lines focused on the view and the natural environment. Sustainable energy requirements on a budget directed the design decisions regarding the SIPs panel insulation, energy systems, roof shading, other insulation systems, lighting and detailing. Easily constructed and linear, the home harkens back to mid century modern pavilions with present day environmental sensitivities and harmony with the site. James Yochum

This roll in shower is designed to provide a dry environment for a caregiver to help with bathing. The fold down seat can be moved up for extra room for someone not in a seated position to have more showering space. A glass reinforced plastic base can be set directly on the studs for an easy installation. This base is available in various sizes but this 60 x 32 size is the most popular.

Inspiration for a mid-sized contemporary built-in desk medium tone wood floor study room remodel in San Francisco with no fireplace and gray walls

I built this on my property for my aging father who has some health issues. Handicap accessibility was a factor in design. His dream has always been to try retire to a cabin in the woods. This is what he got. It is a 1 bedroom, 1 bath with a great room. It is 600 sqft of AC space. The footprint is 40' x 26' overall. The site was the former home of our pig pen. I only had to take 1 tree to make this work and I planted 3 in its place. The axis is set from root ball to root ball. The rear center is aligned with mean sunset and is visible across a wetland. The goal was to make the home feel like it was floating in the palms. The geometry had to simple and I didn't want it feeling heavy on the land so I cantilevered the structure beyond exposed foundation walls. My barn is nearby and it features old 1950's "S" corrugated metal panel walls. I used the same panel profile for my siding. I ran it vertical to match the barn, but also to balance the length of the structure and stretch the high point into the canopy, visually. The wood is all Southern Yellow Pine. This material came from clearing at the Babcock Ranch Development site. I ran it through the structure, end to end and horizontally, to create a seamless feel and to stretch the space. It worked. It feels MUCH bigger than it is. I milled the material to specific sizes in specific areas to create precise alignments. Floor starters align with base. Wall tops adjoin ceiling starters to create the illusion of a seamless board. All light fixtures, HVAC supports, cabinets, switches, outlets, are set specifically to wood joints. The front and rear porch wood has three different milling profiles so the hypotenuse on the ceilings, align with the walls, and yield an aligned deck board below. Yes, I over did it. It is spectacular in its detailing. That's the benefit of small spaces. Concrete counters and IKEA cabinets round out the conversation. For those who cannot live tiny, I offer the Tiny-ish House.
