We were hired to design a Northern Michigan home for our clients to retire. They wanted an inviting “Mountain Rustic” style that would offer a casual, warm and inviting feeling while also taking advantage of the view of nearby Deer Lake. Most people downsize in retirement, but for our clients more space was a virtue. The main level provides a large kitchen that flows into open concept dining and living. With all their family and visitors, ample entertaining and gathering space was necessary. A cozy three-season room which also opens onto a large deck provide even more space. The bonus room above the attached four car garage was a perfect spot for a bunk room. A finished lower level provided even more space for the grandkids to claim as their own, while the main level master suite allows grandma and grandpa to have their own retreat. Rustic details like a reclaimed lumber wall that includes six different varieties of wood, large fireplace, exposed beams and antler chandelier lend to the rustic feel our client’s desired. Ultimately, we were able to capture and take advantage of as many views as possible while also maintaining the cozy and warm atmosphere on the interior. In this project, our team renovated an apartment that had previously been converted from a warehouse into a loft. The space is a study in contrasts, blending exposed brick and original rough-sawn columns and beams with warm colors and soft lighting. The bathroom was completely gutted and remodeled, and we removed a closet to create space for a compact laundry unit. We also stained and finished the corner wood column, which had been hidden previously. All new tile and plumbing fixtures were installed, maintaining the old-fashioned, industrial feel of the space. Repurposed materials – such as the table-turned-vanity, and the shelf brackets constructed from pipes and plumbing fittings – capped off the design. In the kitchen, removing an oversized pantry closet created additional counter space and opened up room for the refrigerator as well. Our team installed new countertops and a subtle tiled backsplash too. The finishing touch was new lighting throughout the apartment, including feature lighting in the dining area and entryway. The homes exterior has a Mediterranean feel with a stucco exterior and stained wood accents. The entry is a work of art with stained arched doors with transoms and a hanging gas lantern. We love it when a home becomes a family compound with wonderful history. That is exactly what this home on Mullet Lake is. The original cottage was built by our client’s father and enjoyed by the family for years. It finally came to the point that there was simply not enough room and it lacked some of the efficiencies and luxuries enjoyed in permanent residences. The cottage is utilized by several families and space was needed to allow for summer and holiday enjoyment. The focus was on creating additional space on the second level, increasing views of the lake, moving interior spaces and the need to increase the ceiling heights on the main level. All these changes led for the need to start over or at least keep what we could and add to it. The home had an excellent foundation, in more ways than one, so we started from there. It was important to our client to create a northern Michigan cottage using low maintenance exterior finishes. The interior look and feel moved to more timber beam with pine paneling to keep the warmth and appeal of our area. The home features 2 master suites, one on the main level and one on the 2nd level with a balcony. There are 4 additional bedrooms with one also serving as an office. The bunkroom provides plenty of sleeping space for the grandchildren. The great room has vaulted ceilings, plenty of seating and a stone fireplace with vast windows toward the lake. The kitchen and dining are open to each other and enjoy the view. The beach entry provides access to storage, the 3/4 bath, and laundry. The sunroom off the dining area is a great extension of the home with 180 degrees of view. This allows a wonderful morning escape to enjoy your coffee. The covered timber entry porch provides a direct view of the lake upon entering the home. The garage also features a timber bracketed shed roof system which adds wonderful detail to garage doors. The home’s footprint was extended in a few areas to allow for the interior spaces to work with the needs of the family. Plenty of living spaces for all to enjoy as well as bedrooms to rest their heads after a busy day on the lake. This will be enjoyed by generations to come.

The house hosts 3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths with the master suite on the first level and 2 guest rooms, full bath and sitting area on the second level. The interior walls and ceilings of the public spaces are birch paneled to amplify the acoustical effect of the baby grand piano in the main living room. The custom made 4 foot diameter iron chandelier dominates the high volume of the main living room, with custom titanium ceiling fans circulating air to eliminate the need for supplemental heating and cooling in the house. The adjacent open kitchen-dining room plan filling out the view side of the main floor plan. The custom fabricated steel "Rooster Gate" was commissioned from and designed in collaboration with the famous, late french sculptor Lucien Ferrenbach who resided nearby with his artist wife BeBe. "LuLu" also created the sculptural deck railings, roof brackets fireplace tools and andirons as well as numerous landscape follies for the house.

OMG blue, gray and orange is for me! Vibrant color scheme, New Orleans charm and improved functionality was the perfect recipe for George and Linda’s colorful character kitchen remodel. Overall the kitchen had a good layout and only needed a few tweaks. What it didn’t have was clear sight lines, good lighting, adequate food storage and AJM style! For months we worked together to devise the perfect plan to bring the couple’s vision to reality. The brick bookcase and ceiling pot rack was removed to provide more counter space and improve visibility; an under-utilized bedroom closet was converted to a Jack and Jill pantry giving them food storage galore; properly spaced recess and pendant lighting provide much needed ambiance for cooking and gatherings; the use of reclaimed wood and iron shelf brackets mixes the old with the new; and to top it all off perfectly planned blue cabinetry paired with light gray and orange walls, solid white quartz counter tops, handmade blue cross and fire tiles and copper hardware set the tone for a kitchen that that is colorful, full of character, timeless and has a place for everything…even George’s guitars!
