Wanting to bring California cool to warm Texas, Designer Elizabeth Tranberg brought to life the kitchen these homeowners could only dream of. Designed with mostly base cabinetry to prevent obstructed views, an oversized arching window provides clear eyesight from every corner of the kitchen, whether you’re sitting at one of the oversized parallel islands or cooking at the stove. The cabinetry is Wood-Mode’s Cologne Inset door style with Hidden Dust Rail, and custom color matched for a Walnut finish. Hidden within the cabinets, pull-out bases and other organizational features along with integrated cabinet lighting make it easy to find cooking supplies, and below, toekick lighting provides ambient and functional lighting after the sun goes down. On top, white marbled countertops complement the Walnut Wood-Mode cabinetry beneath, and across the room, a marble accent wall hosts a wet bar and floating shelving that showcases glassware.

Although this Hinsdale home was only about a decade old, the floor plan and finishes already felt dated. The adjacent covered porch was enclosed and converted into a light-filled new dining room, making entertaining and everyday meals more inviting and accessible. O’Brien Harris also fully paneled the great room, adding built-in bookcases and reshaping existing arches to bring depth, warmth, and architectural continuity. The galley-style kitchen is now the heart of the home. Designed for a family that loves to cook and entertain, it features a central island and a secondary wall of storage with floor-to-ceiling cabinetry to house refrigeration, freezer drawers, and extensive dish storage, outfitted with a library ladder. The cabinet finishes are a blend of painted surfaces and light oak, offering warmth without heaviness. Icebox-style strap hinges and latches bring refined vintage character to the space while emphasizing functionality with beauty. In the primary bath, O’Brien Harris introduced painted cabinetry beneath a waterfall stone counter to coordinate with upholstered panels and full marble finishes. His-and-hers vanities and custom stone flooring complete the serene, tailored retreat. This was a deeply transformative project, not only in terms of layout, but in the way the spaces now flow and function together—with O’Brien Harris cabinetry anchoring it all in timeless craftsmanship.

A black and white kitchen is a sharp contrast to its uninspiring builder grade origins. A 48″ Thermador Range makes a bold statement centered on the wall beneath a black, chimney style hood. A quartz backsplash with a bold, black vein brings a clean sophistication to the kitchen focal point, which is further accentuated by glass transom cabinets for texture and light. The wall is anchored with a refrigerator on one end and an appliance garage on the other. Seating for 4 is provided by a T-shaped island which allows for family-style dining and dinnertime conversation. A tall pantry is complimented by a quaint coffee station, which also contains a microwave drawer. In the adjacent family room, a white fireplace with a simple wood mantle and a narrow, enclosed bookcase bring the entire room into harmony.

Even though this is her lake home, my client wanted her master bath to have some elegance and glam. She loves the cascading white beads and hand-rubbed, antique brass finish of the chandelier, as well as the Carerra marble flooring. You can just see the corner of the mosaic tile inset we designed to accent the approach to the tub. It’s almost like another accessory in the room. To make a smooth transition from the master bedroom to the adjoining bath, we chose the same window treatment fabric for both spaces.

This refined powder room features a curved fluted wood vanity with a scalloped white top and vessel sink, adding organic texture beneath a delicate arched brass-framed mirror. A marble-and-brass vanity light adds understated glamour above, while a small orchid and gold fixtures bring soft, elevated detail to the space. Intricate geometric mosaic tile covers the walls, adding subtle pattern and shine, while marble flooring grounds the room in timeless elegance.

An Ohio family in search of a place to enjoy the Portuguese coast acquired a four-bedroom apartment just outside the center of Cascais. Our studio was engaged to turn a compartmented interior into a holiday residence for a household that gathers in numbers: one that could seat everyone at once and still hold the ease and lightness of a home by the beach. The original plan included a kitchen and laundry room sealed off from the living room, floor finishes and levels that changed from threshold to threshold, and bathrooms in varying styles. Work began by redefining the alignments and circulation. The principal transformation was the opening of the kitchen, creating a more generous social setting centered on a bespoke island fitted with storage and seating. The interior takes its cues from the building’s geometric façade, which projects and recedes in volumes and voids. Bespoke joinery in oak and lacquer carries continuity and order through the apartment. Concealed storage runs throughout: at the entrance, in the dining area, along the living area, and beneath built-in benches. The laundry is merged into the kitchen behind perforated doors for ventilation while keeping the service area discreet. Behind the sofa, a console slips a workspace into the living area without conceding its openness. Curved elements answer the rectilinear architecture; artisanal glazed vertical tiles repeat from the backsplashes onto custom side tables. The palette stays deliberately narrow; the muted oak and lacquer are joined by a softened timber floor, Portuguese Lioz stone, and walls painted to the color of bare plaster. Existing doors and baseboards were repainted in a warm light gray that draws the original elements into the language of the new interior. Upholstery and decorative accents hint at the terracotta, sky blue, and yellow of the façade. The bedrooms are set with upholstered headboards on oak frames, bedside tables that extend those outlines, and wardrobes fit for a long stay. Locally made rugs, bedcovers, and throw pillows soften the composition. In the bathrooms, the plans were reorganized and the showers enlarged. Lioz was used for the counters and sinks, shelves, shower bases, and bathtub surround, with microcement bringing a soothing warmth to the walls, and storage in floating cabinets. Deeper in tone than the rest of the apartment yet never dim, they are quietly elegant rooms made for lingering — taking one’s time getting ready, or unwinding at the end of a day.
