The renovation taken on by Advance Design Studio's designer Scott Christensen and master carpenter Justin Davis included a custom porch, custom built in cabinetry in the living room and children's bedrooms, 2 children's on-suite baths, a guest powder room, a fabulous new master bath with custom closet and makeup area, a new upstairs laundry room, a workout basement, a mud room, new flooring and custom wainscot stairs with planked walls and ceilings throughout the home. The home's original mechanicals were in dire need of updating, so HVAC, plumbing and electrical were all replaced with newer materials and equipment. A dramatic change to the exterior took place with the addition of a quaint standing seam metal roofed farmhouse porch perfect for sipping lemonade on a lazy hot summer day. In addition to the changes to the home, a guest house on the property underwent a major transformation as well. Newly outfitted with updated gas and electric, a new stacking washer/dryer space was created along with an updated bath complete with a glass enclosed shower, something the bath did not previously have. A beautiful kitchenette with ample cabinetry space, refrigeration and a sink was transformed as well to provide all the comforts of home for guests visiting at the classic cottage retreat. The biggest design challenge was to keep in line with the charm the old home possessed, all the while giving the family all the convenience and efficiency of modern functioning amenities. One of the most interesting uses of material was the porcelain "wood-looking" tile used in all the baths and most of the home's common areas. All the efficiency of porcelain tile, with the nostalgic look and feel of worn and weathered hardwood floors. The home’s casual entry has an 8" rustic antique barn wood look porcelain tile in a rich brown to create a warm and welcoming first impression. Painted distressed cabinetry in muted shades of gray/green was used in the powder room to bring out the rustic feel of the space which was accentuated with wood planked walls and ceilings. Fresh white painted shaker cabinetry was used throughout the rest of the rooms, accentuated by bright chrome fixtures and muted pastel tones to create a calm and relaxing feeling throughout the home. Custom cabinetry was designed and built by Advance Design specifically for a large 70” TV in the living room, for each of the children’s bedroom’s built in storage, custom closets, and book shelves, and for a mudroom fit with custom niches for each family member by name. A generous shower with a bench features classic white subway tiles and light blue/green glass accents, as well as a large free standing soaking tub nestled under a window with double sconces to dim while relaxing in a luxurious bath. This smaller galley kitchen was the perfect opportunity to add some warmth to this cape cod home filled with lots of charm. In this kitchen, there is plenty of space and opportunities for this family who loves to cook together to spend some time amongst their double ovens and abundance of counter space. The cabinets are white uppers with latte colored base and a featured backsplash of hand painted tile that pulls in all of the colors of the kitchen. The beverage center is maple with a cashew stain to match the kitchen table. We added a bookcase next to the refrigerator at the back door so there is room to drop things as they walk in. The pantry area is a large wall cabinet with rollouts and a three drawer base giving plenty of room for storage even though this space may not be the biggest.

The continuation of the same materials throughout the house finally bonded all the different spaces into a singular home. The same oak was used also for the built-in TV wall as floating shelves and base cabinets with a large, tiled center piece for the recessed TV and the electric fireplace. Every renovation has a story, and this one turned out to be a bit of a fairy tale. From toad to prince, this small award winning NYC kitchen is now a livable, usable dream kitchen. Full of fun design dilemmas, the biggest was how to transform this into an eat in kitchen while keeping lots of prep and cabinet space? The all custom banquette was the key. Hidden behind one of the benches is a heating and cooling unit. The bench comes easily apart for maintenance with the turn of four screws. The client asked me to help her with her long time dream to turn one of the guest bedrooms into her own space. The client explained that her Mom often visit them and they really need a room, which is the cute and cozy office and easily can be transformed into the Guest room for Mama. I asked a few questions to understand the Client's preferable style and favorite colors. She expected fresh colors with some Lilac accents. The room wasn't very big and airy. That is why I suggested to use the the wall murals with the perspective and horizontal line, which will make this room visually deeper and wider. I found this great wallcoverings with the Spring, or summer forest motives. Very important moment is that you can see the forest lit by the bright sun. Very positive mood of this wall mural made this room sunny and airy. I used the colors of Nature: Tree foliage colors in combination with a dark woods. I selected the rug, with repeats blossoming flowers colors. This rug made me feel like the flower's petals scattered to the floor. A biggest color accent of this room is the book folding sofa. The client's Mama now have a very shiny room with a comfortable sofa to sleep on, at the same time my client has a personal space to work, to enjoy while she is reading her favorite books. .

Easily the most special feature in this space is the resin panels that had been inserted into two partials walls positioned on opposite sides of the room. A mod floral pattern in a subdued lime green compliment the shell tiles and allows light to diffuse into the tub area. The opposite side provides a bit of privacy for the privy, and balances the composition as a whole. The white double vanity with a Carrera marble top and classic chrome fixtures adds a touch of class to the contemporary space. The ceramic wood plank floor tiles in a white washed finish add aesthetic warmth underfoot. Kiwi green walls sit above a staggered white subway tile wainscot that wraps around the perimeter, with a cool gray paint surround the resin panels.
