Design ideas for a large traditional partial sun backyard concrete paver formal garden in Toronto for spring.

This backyard was transformed into a Moroccan themed poolside oasis. Ecological Concerns Incorporated oversaw the design and construction of the project. After installing natural habitat areas and California native plants, this poolside paradise is now drought tolerant and practically maintenance free.

Designed by John Mariani, this formal garden uses native plants for a traditional design with an exceptional environmental twist. Taking advantage of the many benefits of native materials, like less maintenance, watering, fertilizing; a naturally acclimation to the environment; and generation of a habitat for wildlife that adds life to the space, the many plants chosen each fulfill a different need- height, color, and texture. To anchor a modern house, designed by Frederick Fisher & Partners, Campion Walker brought in a mature oak grove that at first frames the home and then invites the visitor to explore the grounds including an intimate culinary garden and stone fruit orchard. The neglected hillside on the back of the property once overgrown with ivy was transformed into a California native oak woodland, with under-planting of ceanothus and manzanitas. We used recycled water to create a dramatic water feature cut directly into the limestone entranceway framed by a cacti and succulent garden.

A warm copper sculpture rests against the trellis, gradually woven into the climbing jasmine. Its geometric form contrasts the soft white blooms and glossy leaves, adding a touch of artistry without overpowering the natural growth. Subtle details like this create layers of interest, offering unexpected focal points as the garden reveals itself.

A variety of drought tolerant, native Californian plants as well as other Mediterranean plants create vibrant colour and textural interest throughout the seasons.
