We borrowed square footage from the bedroom to create a luxurious en suite bathroom. One of the homeowners’ concerns when carving out space for the bathroom was whether it would feel constricted to walk into the room and find a wall right in front of your face. In order to make sure this alcove didn't feel tight, we created a niche with a mirror in the entry alcove to the room. This recessed niche makes the entryway feel roomier while hanging onto the critical space needed for the luxurious bathroom of their dreams. We also designed custom built-ins in lieu of dressers. These drawer/shelf combination units perfectly blend with the white walls and, when supplemented with closet storage, provide clothing storage that is visually quiet and well-composed.

In addition to their laundry, mudroom, and powder bath, we also remodeled the owner's suite. We "borrowed" space from their long bedroom to add a second closet. We created a new layout for the bathroom to include a private toilet room (with unexpected wallpaper), larger shower, bold paint color, and a soaking tub. They had also asked for a steam shower and sauna... but being the dream killers we are we had to scale back. Don't worry, we are doing those elements in their upcoming basement remodel. We had custom designed cabinetry with Pro Design using rifted white oak for the vanity and the floating shelves over the freestanding tub. We also made sure to incorporate a bench, oversized niche, and hand held shower fixture...all must have for the clients.

2011 NARI CAPITAL COTY FINALIST AWARD WINNER The homeowners purchased this 6,000 square foot Mount Vernon home as they were about to retire. While spacious, it was in desperate need of renovating. High on their list of goals for the project was having a large, contemporary master bathroom. To get extra space for the new bathroom, the designer borrowed some space from an existing closet. Eliminating the tub—the owners preferred a larger shower—also provided some “added” space. The new bathroom consists of a very large walk-in shower with double entry, built-in benches, multiple shower heads and a dramatic curved glass block partition wall. His and her vanities have been created for each client’s individual needs. Marble and tile used on the floors and walls features very specific handpicked glass tile inserts & designs. The use of colorful marble counter tops and open vanity cabinetry is part of contemporary look of this project. A mixture of hand selected commode and faucets, rain showers, beveled mirrors, and custom lighting are all part of the detailed craftsmanship that went into this project.

The Homeowners wanted the design be modern with clean lines and fresh ideas that was relaxing and rejuvenating. They also expressed the desire for an open bathroom with some concrete work. Here Mitra designed a complete new layout for an open space that combined the master bed with semi open bath. The design called for a master bedroom area that would be separated by a very modern and artistic wall. A textural wall that was created by two 3” floating wall panels on both the bed and bath side. The design detail of this ‘floating’ wall panel was carefully sandwiched between a concrete like ‘suspended’ wall and a 3” of gap of space that separated the master bed and bath area kept it open and inviting to the bath area. The slanted master bed ceiling was wrapped with wood slats that was custom hand painted by the very talented local painter. DOWNLOAD NOW   This Glen Ellyn couple wanted to transform their dated kitchen into a more family-friendly space to use on a daily basis for cooking family meals and for entertaining friends. The existing kitchen was quite chopped up with strange soffits and different ceiling heights. To make the space flow in a more logical manner, we borrowed an unused desk area from the adjoining hallway and reconfigured a neighboring bath. Getting it to work on paper was fairly straightforward, but there was a bit of complicated beam work involved as the new kitchen flows through what was an old exterior wall. The new ceiling is now completely flush as we were able to hide the support in the ceiling joists. A new, larger window was added at the sink, the doorway to the room was widened and the resulting space creates a more easy flow from dining room to family room. The clients chose white inset cabinets, white marble tops and an apron sink to keep the space feeling simple yet original to the home's Colonial styling. Ship lap siding on the back of the island and at the pantry storage ceiling, a walnut butcher block, and antique brass details give the space an updated look. Professional stainless appliances are functional and beautiful. In addition to a large built-in fridge and 36" range, a second oven is housed in the island for flexibility. The pantry area has a convenience station that houses the family's espresso machine along with the microwave drawer. Another large bank of cabinets in the same area serves as pantry storage for dry goods. The bathroom was also remodeled as part of this project. The full bath has a vanity, shower and convenient baby changing area. The floor is encaustic tile, a type of concrete tile recognizable by its bold graphics. The mirror and lighting add a few modern touches to keep it in line with the Owner's personal style.
