This craftsman kitchen borrows natural elements from architect and design icon, Frank Lloyd Wright. A slate backsplash, soapstone counters, and wood cabinetry is a perfect throwback to midcentury design. What ties this kitchen to present day design are elements such as stainless steel appliances and smart and hidden storage. This kitchen takes advantage of every nook and cranny to provide extra storage for pantry items and cookware.

This kitchen is in a small 100 year old home in the center of the historic district of town. Maximizing the use of available space and imbuing this well-used, functioning kitchen with rich detail and elegance were the two most important aspects of the project. Except for being able to borrow a small amount of space from an adjacent hallway to accommodate the depth of the refrigerator, pantry and drawers on one end wall, there was no other way to expand the footprint of the kitchen. Since we had already remodeled and upgraded the décor in most of the rest of the house and since the kitchen opened into the dining room, we wanted to create a “little jewel box” of a kitchen that was dressy enough to blend with the surrounding areas. Extensive use of Calcutta marble and a mirror-backed cabinet with glass doors provide the desired sparkle and elegance while the existing oak floor and a thick mahogany countertop visually warm the room. Custom cabinets provide the necessary storage, and we found the perfect antique rug to add color. Hand painted tiles above the stove, the custom hood, and an elegant faucet underscore the theme. “Fun” elements include the imported French stool and the portrait of the homeowner’s cats placed just above their feeding area.

The utility room was in between the LR and the kitchen, so we moved it in order to connect the two spaces. We put the utility room where the laundry room used to be and created a new laundry room off a new hallway that leads to the master bedroom. The space for this was created by borrowing space from the XL dining area. We carved out space for the formal living room to accommodate a larger kitchen. The rest of the space became modest-sized offices with French doors to allow light from the house's front into the kitchen. The living room now transitioned into the kitchen with a new bar and sitting area. We also transformed the full bath and hallway, which became a half-bath and mudroom for this single couple. The master bathroom was redesigned to receive a private toilet room and tiled shower. The stairs were reoriented to highlight an open railing and small foyer with a pretty armchair. The client’s existing stylish furnishings were incorporated into the colorful, bold design. Each space had personality and unique charm. The aqua kitchen’s focal point is the Kohler cast-iron vintage-inspired sink. The enlarged windows in the living room and sink allow the homeowners to enjoy the natural surroundings. The condominium is on the 15th floor of Siesta Key’s Terrace Building, originally designed in 1969 by Frank Folsom Smith. Two corner units were combined into a single condo. All interior partitions were removed. The ceiling finish was stripped to expose the concrete formwork. The bathrooms, storage, and kitchen are laid out in a wood-clad central core. The windows were replaced by a series of 7-panel bi-fold glass doors that open out from the structural corners. A custom steel desk was designed to span between existing columns. The master bedroom faces the city while the living space faces the Gulf and the beach. Ten-foot-wide steel and wood folding partitions allow the owner to transform the space and to isolate the office from either the living or the master. The partitions fold back into the wood core to reconnect the private suite with the rest of the unit to form one continuous space. The master bath borrows light from an adjoining space through a window with a switchable electric film. Speakers, vents and air return are all accommodated through discrete cuts and perforations in the wood veneer.

A second light source at the side, softened by sheer textile, introduces directional light that grazes the wall plane and registers the room's proportions throughout the day. The restrained material palette—uninterrupted white wall surfaces, low-sheen flooring, simple trim profiles—is intentional, allowing the architecture to recede so that light, aperture, and spatial proportion carry the room. Photo credit Jane Beiles Located on a beautiful property with a legacy of architectural and landscape innovation, this guest house was originally designed by the offices of Eliot Noyes and Alan Goldberg. Due to its age and expanded use as an in-law dwelling for extended stays, the 1200 sf structure required a renovation and small addition. While one objective was to make the structure function independently of the main house with its own access road, garage, and entrance, another objective was to knit the guest house into the architectural fabric of the property. New window openings deliberately frame landscape and architectural elements on the site, while exterior finishes borrow from that of the main house (cedar, zinc, field stone) bringing unity to the family compound. Inside, the use of lighter materials gives the simple, efficient spaces airiness. A challenge was to find an interior design vocabulary which is both simple and clean, but not cold or uninteresting. A combination of rough slate, white washed oak, and high gloss lacquer cabinets provide interest and texture, but with their minimal detailing create a sense of calm.

In addition to their laundry, mudroom, and powder bath, we also remodeled the owner's suite. We "borrowed" space from their long bedroom to add a second closet. We created a new layout for the bathroom to include a private toilet room (with unexpected wallpaper), larger shower, bold paint color, and a soaking tub. They had also asked for a steam shower and sauna... but being the dream killers we are we had to scale back. Don't worry, we are doing those elements in their upcoming basement remodel. We had custom designed cabinetry with Pro Design using rifted white oak for the vanity and the floating shelves over the freestanding tub. We also made sure to incorporate a bench, oversized niche, and hand held shower fixture...all must have for the clients.
