Sebastian and Tanja DiGrande's quest for natural light and open, modern design led them to Klopf Architecture in San Francisco. Working hand-in-hand with homeowner/designer Tanja DiGrande, Klopf collaborated on a modern addition to the rear of a traditional-style home. The idea was to depart from the original style completely to draw a distinction between the original house and any later additions, as well as observe a very minimal, clean, gallery-like modern style against which changing daylight, art, furniture, and of course the people provide the color and motion. With its dark gray stuccoed walls, dark steel railing, and floor-to-ceiling windows, the exterior of the addition is at the same time an open, modern box as well as a receding volume that acts almost as a backdrop for the house, receding visually out of respect for the original home. From the interior, windows bring in nature and views from all around the lush property. They also allow views of the original house. Up on the roof deck the views magnify. The owners use a boom and crank to bring up food and drinks when entertaining! Inside, the simple clean-lined spaces showcase the couple’s minimal, modern taste. The open bathroom epitomizes the clean, minimal style of the addition. On the exterior, steel elements bring a more industrial modern feeling to the addition from the rear. 2011 CAPITAL COTY AWARD GRAND AWARD WINNER Having just purchased this new home, the owners did not like the disconnection between kitchen and breakfast area. The garden window over the sink was in disrepair, the cabinetry was dark and the room’s flow had no rhyme or reason. The kitchen, however, had a lot of potential. A new design was put together which involved reframing the garden window to create panoramic viewing. Two skylights were added which really brightened up the space. All of the previous bulkheads were removed to allow stacked cabinetry and upper display cupboards. A new larger cooking island with angular wings and seating space around it is now the focal point of this kitchen. An additional countertop built on decorative columns offers space for the couple’s children to do their homework or have a snack. Entire kitchen and breakfast area now has a larger porcelain tile floor laid in a pattern to make the place even larger. Honey-colored maple cabinetry with a slightly rubbed chocolate glaze finish gives a classic but sophisticated look to this kitchen. The marriage of faux painting and brick fascia introduced a unique look into the space. The homeowners are so thrilled with the outcome, they are considering remodeling the rest of the home.

This open concept dining and living space at the Interlachen Modern Lakehouse on Gull Lake is wrapped in antique elm paneling and beams, bringing warmth to the room above a rugged stone fireplace wall. A statement pendant chandelier hangs over the dining table, while a stone-topped kitchen island in the foreground and a sofa and console table in the living area beyond continue the home's layered material palette of wood, stone, and steel. Our antique elm paneling and beams are milled from barn timbers that can date back to the 1800s, carrying the marks of their past life, wormholes, peg holes, and rich tonal variation that no new wood can fake. Wrapping both walls and ceiling in a space like this, the reclaimed elm brings a warm, enveloping character that ties the home's open rooms together.
