Dramatic plant textures, modern hardscaping and sharp angles enhanced this mid-century modern bungalow. Soft plants were chosen to contrast with the sharp angles of the pathways and hard edges of the MCM home, while providing all-season interest. Horizontal privacy screens wrap the front porch and create intimate garden spaces – some visible only from the street and some visible only from inside the home. The front yard is relatively small in size, but full of colorful texture.

Our house was built 70 years ago by a camellia enthusiast, Dr. J.M. Habel. For whatever reason, nature rewarding us after a hard year of the pandemic, or the 6" of rain we got in February, but the hundreds of camellias he planted, bred, and nurtured, exploded in flowers this year and put on a dazzling show. If you are interested in camellias, Bob Black with Bennett's Creek Nursery in Smithfield, Virginia is an expert.

This lush landscape revolves around a sunken dining patio constructed from Pennsylvania Bluestone. Ornamental grasses, perennials, lavenders and herbs fill this garden, with plants blooming in every crack and climbing up every fence. In the A Beautiful Thing is Never Perfect wallpaper, the artist Magnus Gjoen uses the Baroque method of representing the cycle of life by interlacing vibrant blooms with hints of decay. This maximalist striped design features roses, geberas, butterflies and snails entwined around beflowered skulls hidden amongst the undergrowth.
