To deal with the pain and excitement of their kids leaving the house for college, these empty nesters wanted to transform their lawn—once home to swing sets and games of catch—into a peaceful retreat. She was dead-set on a water feature, he really wanted a fire pit, and their dogs (which had moved up in rank since the kids were gone) needed a nice patch of grass to play on. The couple’s tastes had changed in the 20 years since they’d bought the Spanish- style bungalow, and they wanted a garden with a more contemporary feeling. Looking to the history of Spanish landscape design, we were able tweak traditional layouts and elements to create a more contemporary garden that fit the needs of all the inhabitants of the home—human and canine alike.

These two though.... This retired "simple beach couple" are a couple of our faves. This was a collaboration in every sense of the word from start to finish. This was not a "throw us the keys and we'll do it all for you" type of project. They were very involved in every decision from architect plans all the way to bedside lamp placement. They had this land and former bungalow on a walkstreet in their beloved Hermosa Beach for over 30 years before they enlisted us to help them design and build their dream home. We worked with Lane Design Build and the client in wonderful harmony, and everyone is very pleased with the results.

The owners of The Applewood Manor, a boutique bed and breakfast in Montford, reached out to The Hands of Sean Perry Co. in 2023 for another renovation project — this time, for their cozy Cortland Cottage space. The team quickly got to work transforming the historic room to include all the comforts of a modern, boutique hotel-like experience, while still honoring all Historic Resources Commission guidelines. In the bath, they installed spa-quality heated flooring, a new Grohe faucet, and vibrant blue tile from Mediterranean Tile. Throughout the room, the crew laid new French Oak engineered hardwood flooring and added fresh, locally sourced wooden windowsills from Green River Woods for a more rustic feel. With help from the owner and operator, who is an interior designer, the crew added pops of color throughout the room — painting the door a bold shade of red and hanging colorful modern artwork with a decidedly canine theme, honoring the owners’ beloved French bulldogs: Cleopatra, Pearl and Ziggy Stardust.

Situated in rural east Templeton is the Santa Barbara style estate that is the Castillo Residence. It exemplifies the classic nature of old world Spain, sporting massive timber trusses, authentic terra cotta tile flooring and pristine white washed walls. The entry to the residence is suitably grand, with a sweeping stair case up to a landing that overlooks the antique wood front door. The house boasts lofty ceilings in the great room, and a two story library complete with spiral stair case. This house was not only designed to suit its human residents but also its canine residents, and they have their own room off of the 5-car garage at the lower level. The master suite occupies a full wing of the residence, at a mere 1,700 square feet, providing space for a master sitting room, bedroom, bathroom, and sprawling walk in closets with laundry facilities. There are a plethora of outdoor living spaces, including a full outdoor kitchen, reflecting pool water feature and massive covered porches overlooking the Templeton countryside.

Many families ponder the idea of adding extra living space for a few years before they are actually ready to remodel. Then, all-of-the sudden, something will happen that makes them realize that they can’t wait any longer. In the case of this remodeling story, it was the snowstorm of 2016 that spurred the homeowners into action. As the family was stuck in the house with nowhere to go, they longed for more space. The parents longed for a getaway spot for themselves that could also double as a hangout area for the kids and their friends. As they considered their options, there was one clear choice…to renovate the detached garage. The detached garage previously functioned as a workshop and storage room and offered plenty of square footage to create a family room, kitchenette, and full bath. It’s location right beside the outdoor kitchen made it an ideal spot for entertaining and provided an easily accessible bathroom during the summertime. Even the canine family members get to enjoy it as they have their own personal entrance, through a bathroom doggie door. Our design team listened carefully to our client’s wishes to create a space that had a modern rustic feel and found selections that fit their aesthetic perfectly. To set the tone, Blackstone Oak luxury vinyl plank flooring was installed throughout. The kitchenette area features Maple Shaker style cabinets in a pecan shell stain, Uba Tuba granite countertops, and an eye-catching amber glass and antique bronze pulley sconce. Rather than use just an ordinary door for the bathroom entry, a gorgeous Knotty Alder barn door creates a stunning focal point of the room. The fantastic selections continue in the full bath. A reclaimed wood double vanity with a gray washed pine finish anchors the room. White, semi-recessed sinks with chrome faucets add some contemporary accents, while the glass and oil-rubbed bronze mini pendant lights are a balance between both rustic and modern. The design called for taking the shower tile to the ceiling and it really paid off. A sliced pebble tile floor in the shower is curbed with Uba Tuba granite, creating a clean line and another accent detail. The new multi-functional space looks like a natural extension of their home, with its matching exterior lights, new windows, doors, and sliders. And with winter approaching and snow on the way, this family is ready to hunker down and ride out the storm in comfort and warmth. When summer arrives, they have a designated bathroom for outdoor entertaining and a wonderful area for guests to hang out. It was a pleasure to create this beautiful remodel for our clients and we hope that they continue to enjoy it for many years to come.

The BarK Puplick House, a play on words for ‘Public House,’ is the picturesque pub for the canine community. Just a short ‘pup crawl’ away is fido’s watering hole, posh nosh, and inn for relaxation. Built with timeless materials and craftsmanship, this ‘Gastropup’ fuses industrial decor with town & country charm. The industrial lighting and steel casement window captures the essence of city life, while shutters, traditional millwork, and floral & plaid textiles express the countryside’s beauty.

Let me start by saying this was by far the hardest job I’ve ever done and as you read on you will soon realise why. The customer called me out to quote on a Quarry tiled floor at a house in Danehill that was covered in concrete screed. She said it had always been there and she’s lived there for years always meaning to get it bought back to a state that she could live with. Undaunted by the state of the floor (see photo below) we agreed a price and fixed a date to do the work. For the next two days I spent all my time pouring neat Tile Doctor Grout Clean-up onto small areas and working it in with a metal scraper and wire brush. Once removed the resultant muck was rinsed and extracted using a wet vacuum, laborious work as you can imagine although I was kept entertained by playing the occasional game of fetch with a very keen Collie dog who seemed fascinated by the bloke sitting on his floor all day. After two days of this my hands were throbbing but I could see red quarry tile emerging. The final two hours on the second day were spent making good any areas under the washing machine and fridge and giving the floor a thorough rinse to remove any trace of cleaning product. The floor dried off overnight and I came back the third day to seal the tiles making sure that my canine companion had been sent next door first. To seal the floor I used six coats of Tile Doctor Seal and Go which really brought back the colour in the floor and gave it an amazingly shiny surface. Once sealed the floors transformation was complete and when the customer returned from work she was utterly speechless. I’d turned what looked like a building site into a stunning tiled floor.

Complete Garage Makeover. Restored concrete floor to eradicate canine urine odor that permeated the floor. Painted the walls and ceiling. Added new LED lighting. Custom designed all storage solutions, design includes HandiWall for hanging garden accessories, pet grooming station, 33 inch deep storage cabinets sized for 22 roughneck totes, seat for comfortably removing shoes, HandiWall for pet accessories and jackets, shoe storage and three cabinets with bottom drawer for storing golf clubs, accessories and shoes. Materials: Weekend Getaway cabinet material, taupe HandiWall and snap down diamond pattern floor in colors to match customer automobiles.

Ottawa Rustic Buff Smooth solid steps were tucked around the corner of the house to allow the family’s St. Bernard access to the side yard. These provided the arthritic canine with a comfortable tread-to-riser ratio. A pyramidal Green Mountain boxwood guides his way by flanking the steps.

Formal dining room in a North Scottsdale Ranch located in the desert. Fabric window treatments help reduce echo in rooms with high ceilings and hard floor coverings.The ceiling recess and drapery elevate the eye and balance the voluminous space. We chose top treatments in lieu of long drapery, since two of the ranch's canine 'kids' often peer through these windows.
