Walls are finished with architectural fluted millwork banding near the ceiling — a detail that adds rhythm and sophistication without overwhelming the space. Flanking panels of delicately patterned textured wallpaper frame a striking large-scale abstract canvas in black, white, and gold, which serves as both the focal point and the color story for the entire room. Paired frosted glass capsule sconces with warm brass fittings illuminate the artwork from either side, casting a soft, gallery-like glow. The furniture selection is equally considered: a generous cream linen sofa anchors the primary seating area, complemented by a pair of sculptural dark leather swivel lounge chairs with a stone travertine pedestal side table nestled between them. A plush velvet ottoman, a brass arc floor lamp, and a soft gray area rug over wide-plank hardwood floors complete the composition with quiet luxury. The tile — a mosaic of black, white, and metallic stone set in a kaleidoscopic diamond pattern — catches the light and shifts dramatically depending on the angle. A pair of oversized brass dome pendant lights hang above a sleek island topped in richly veined dark marble, providing both task lighting and a glamorous focal point. Open shelving built into the backsplash wall displays sculptural art objects — including a carved Buddha head and white abstract sculptures — reinforcing the home's gallery aesthetic. A brass spring-coil faucet, integrated beverage refrigerator, and patterned swirl-print ottomans tucked beneath the island make this bar equally functional and unforgettable. Game Room A complete tonal departure, the game room embraces deep, moody drama through floor-to-ceiling dark olive green walls and ceiling. This most recent remodel project in Albany beautifully marries the charm of the past with the functionality of the present. Under the expert guidance of Project Manager, Steve Shanholtz, and Designer, Sarah McDonald, we transformed this cherished space that had been home to many generations into a modern masterpiece. The client was looking to update the home while preserving its unique history from the 1800s. One of the many standout features of this home was its stunning patterned wood floor which we carefully restored to its former glory. The wood ceiling, another remarkable element of this space, was covered to allow a modern feel as well as create a time capsule for a future owner. We also removed the fireplace fully intact to showcase in a different area of the home. Crisp navy and white cabinets brought a clean and timeless look to the kitchen creating a harmonious blend with the warmth of the island, counters and backsplash. These homeowners were ecstatic upon seeing their request for an island that could house their farm sink AND dishwasher become a reality. This remodel isn’t just about the past, it’s also about the future. We were able to embody the essence of transformation while respecting the history, a true testament to the power of design and the skilled hands of a master craftsman.

Family room - transitional family room idea in New York

This Eichler-esque house, in a neighborhood known for its tracts of homes by the famous developer, was a little different from the rest- a one-off custom build from 1962 that had mid-century modern bones but funky, neo-traditional finishes in the worn-out, time capsule state that the new owners found it. This called for an almost-gut remodel to keep the good, upgrade the building’s envelope and MEP systems, and reimagine the home’s character. To create a home that feels of its times, both now and then- A mid-century for the 21st century. At the center of the existing home was a long, slender rectangular form that contained a fireplace, an indoor BBQ, and kitchen storage, and on the other side an original, suspended wood and steel rod stair down to the bedroom level below. Under the carpeted treads we were sure we’d find beautiful oak, as this stair was identical to one at our earlier Clarendon heights mid-century project. This elegant core was obscured by walls that enclosed the kitchen and breakfast areas and a jumble of aged finishes that hid the elegance of this defining element. Lincoln Lighthill Architect removed the walls and unified the core’s finishes with light grey ground-face concrete block on the upgraded fireplace and BBQ, lacquered cabinets, and chalkboard paint at the stair wall for the owners’ young children to decorate. A new skylight above the stair washes this wall with light and brightens up the formerly dark center of the house. The rest of the interior is a combination of mid-century-inspired elements and modern updates. New finishes throughout- cork flooring, ground-face concrete block, Heath tile, and white birch millwork give the interior the mid-century character it never fully had, while modern, minimalist detailing gives it a timeless, serene simplicity. New lighting throughout, mostly indirect and all warm-dim LED , subtly and efficiently lights the home. All new plumbing and fixtures similarly reduce the home’s use of precious resources. On the exterior, new windows, insulation, and roofing provide modern standards of comfort and efficiency, while a new paint job and brick stain give the house an elegant yet playful character, with the golden yellow Heath tile from the primary bathroom floor reappearing on the front door.

French doors from the attic were refurbished and returned to their original place. This 1950's built home was a time capsule in the most stunning way! Every element of the original modern home was perfectly preserved, including the kitchen. Unfortunately, the closed off kitchen wasn't fitting in the lifestyle of the busy young family. We needed to open the space, update the layout and finishes, all while ensuring we didn't lose the charm of the home.
