We seamlessly blended the floor of the lift with the new floor. Though the attic had two large existing skylights, to bring in more natural light we added two more skylights—one in the bathroom and one in the hallway. We also installed new recessed lights throughout the entire space and in the bathroom.

Pak Cheung The only way to create an open, light-filled living space was to construct dormers in the roofline. Our designer opted for two—one large gable dormer on the front of the house and a smaller shed dormer on the back roof. The choice of paint color added bright and playful feel to the space.

Pak Cheung The new bathroom in the attic is located in the rear shed dormer we built. The bathroom has universal design features including a vanity top that has an open area under the sink, a low threshold shower, a low niche, and an adjustable showerhead.

The results of this landscape lighting stems back to when our team did the landscaping and the ability to earmark the location of these trees to row up on each side of the driveway really contributes to proper orientation of the home on the plot especially deliberate at night to reach out and welcome guests to bring them into this sideways rear flag lot. The House and grounds are immaculate and show up well at night. Properly placed well and uplights on the trees surrounding the home really make it a welcome sight. The Lighting here is cohesive in dominance and controls the direction of the viewers point of view.

Photo: Pak Cheung This section is a new gable dormer that adds much-needed volume to this attic. The challenge when adding a dormer is maintaining structural support of the ridge beam. In this case, given the age of the house, finding point loads to support the existing beam would have created unknown conditions and required renovation work on the first and basement levels. The engineer's solution was to create an A-frame girder supported on existing exterior bearing walls. The new gable dormer is tied into this girder.
