Thompson Remodeling really enjoyed working with this Grand Rapids family to remodel their basement into a family space where they could showcase their favorite sports memorabilia and other memories from their home state of Maryland. After remodeling their previous home just 6 months earlier, circumstances required the family to move. One day upon returning to their new home, they found their basement flooded! Realizing they needed to act fast to repair the damage they contacted Thompson Remodeling to help. When discussing the design for the project, our clients told us how much they had loved the updates they made to their last home and were hoping to use similar warm tones and rustic materials. We looked at photos of that home for inspiration and developed a design that would serve as an entertaining and gathering space that would allow their fantastic collection of Maryland sports memorabilia to shine. Careful consideration was given on how to use every nook and cranny of space, as was the selection process for specific rustic materials that would contribute warmth and visual interest. We used Ghost Wood to create a rich accent wall in the tv viewing area. A private hangout space for our clients' daughter was created behind sliding barn doors.

Long time clients who are "empty nesters" downsized from a larger house to this new condominium, designed to showcase their small yet impressive collection of modern art. The space plan, high ceilings, and careful consideration of materials lends their residence an quiet air of sophistication without pretension. Existing furnishings nearly 30 years old were slightly modified and reupholstered to work in the new residence, which proved both economical and comforting.

Inspired by the modern romanticism, blissful tranquility and harmonious elegance of Bobby McAlpine’s home designs, this custom home designed and built by Anthony Wilder Design/Build perfectly combines all these elements and more. With Southern charm and European flair, this new home was created through careful consideration of the needs of the multi-generational family who lives there.

This young family began working with us after struggling with their previous contractor. They were over budget and not achieving what they really needed with the addition they were proposing. Rather than extend the existing footprint of their house as had been suggested, we proposed completely changing the orientation of their separate kitchen, living room, dining room, and sunroom and opening it all up to an open floor plan. By changing the configuration of doors and windows to better suit the new layout and sight lines, we were able to improve the views of their beautiful backyard and increase the natural light allowed into the spaces. We raised the floor in the sunroom to allow for a level cohesive floor throughout the areas. Their extended kitchen now has a nice sitting area within the kitchen to allow for conversation with friends and family during meal prep and entertaining. The sitting area opens to a full dining room with built in buffet and hutch that functions as a serving station. Conscious thought was given that all “permanent” selections such as cabinetry and countertops were designed to suit the masses, with a splash of this homeowner’s individual style in the double herringbone soft gray tile of the backsplash, the mitred edge of the island countertop, and the mixture of metals in the plumbing and lighting fixtures. Careful consideration was given to the function of each cabinet and organization and storage was maximized. This family is now able to entertain their extended family with seating for 18 and not only enjoy entertaining in a space that feels open and inviting, but also enjoy sitting down as a family for the simple pleasure of supper together.

The homeowners came to us looking for assistance to design and build a custom home on their current lakefront property. They were living on the site in an existing small cabin from the 1960s. The property has a steep embankment down to the lake and a zoning setback that created challenges for fitting a custom home on the lot. Xpand worked with the homeowners to find and select the size and style of home that they liked and worked for their unique piece of land. The homeowner was very interested in aesthetics and desired a modern home with sleek low roof lines and lots of windows to take advantage of the lake views. Restrictions from zoning challenged Xpand, but we were able to perfectly fit the home with an angled deck that was within 3” of both the front and back yard setbacks. In addition to a modern aesthetic, the homeowners are hoping to stay in the home as they age, so careful consideration was given to making sure that their new home would function for them in the future by including wider doorways, curbless showers, hard surface flooring and single-floor living. This mid-century modern designed home includes a high covered entry, high ceilings, floor-to- ceiling windows and an open floorplan. Overall, this medium-sized home feels spacious yet bright and inviting. Slab on grade platform construction includes highly efficient in-floor hydronic heat that keeps everything consistently warm in the winter. Throughout the interior of the home, the use of clean lines reflects the modern aesthetic desired by the homeowner. The kitchen features flat-panel doors and a large island with a dramatic quartz countertop. The use of black and white tones throughout with bright pops of color and geometric shapes completes the modern look to perfection. Outside, restrictions from zoning challenged Xpand, but we were able to perfectly fit the home with an angled deck that was within 3” of both the front and back yard setbacks. The unique stylistic deck includes airplane cable railings and lifetime warrantied PVC decking on the back of the house.

The clients wanted to brighten up the palette and add light while respecting the Craftsman style woodwork and the classic character of the home. They also expressed a desire for eclectic blended with traditional styling. They also desired warm burnished metals in the lighting, furniture and accessories. The first thing we did was change out the deep burgundy wallpaper for a light-reflecting coat of fresh paint. Careful consideration was given to conserve a good portion of the woodwork in its existing dark stain, but we also balanced and brightened the palette by whitening the fireplace surround, the ceiling and its crown moulding as well as the built-in shelves. The outer framing of the shelves was painted in a cheerful yet calming blue, and the same blue was repeated in the curtains, accessories, and the rugs. We assisted the clients in all material selections, finishes, furniture, colours, and we designed the custom curtains and cushions. The entire living space is now bright, inviting, and still classic.

Comfortable and durable are words that sometimes don’t mix, however, with careful consideration, planning and performance in mind, the Design Team was able to create a summer retreat - with two separate living and entertaining spaces – for kids and adults that’s low on maintenance and high on style. Streamlined contemporary décor seamlessly mixes with the lakeside views; the home was designed to utilize natural light and captivating views. After years of dedication and anticipation, our clients embarked on their dream renovation project as they approached retirement. Their vision? A cozy yet elegant space nestled in the picturesque coastal town of Ipswich, MA. With the help of Betsy at Hutton Home Design, our skilled team, and many trade partners, our client’s vision became a reality. We built them a custom, one-bedroom accessory dwelling unit (ADU) over the garage of their daughter and son-in-law's home. The heating and cooling system consisted of mini split units. We cantilevered the second floor to add space to the kitchen, making the room seem larger. We created a functional and beautiful space within the zoning constraints of 900 square feet. All the while, careful consideration was given to scale and ensuring the addition looked like an extension of the existing home. The homeowners wanted an updated kitchen, bathroom and fireplaces. Space remodeled Kitchen - 182 sq ft Powder Room - 20 sq ft Style: Transitional FLOW Careful consideration was taken to make sure that all the new spaces (kitchen, powder room, and fireplaces) flowed from a design perspective. MATERIAL SELECTIONS The homeowners selected custom manufactured cabinetry with rift cut oak veneer plywood in a custom gray finish with shaker door styles. This project was full outdoor living environment, what some would call a “staycation” backyard. A hybrid pool had been installed the previous year but now the living and entertaining spaces needed to be constructed. Consisting of a deck, two patio spaces with walkways connecting all, a couple retaining walls, fencing, landscaping and a new sliding door. The retaining walls were needed to allow for the patio space around to pool. The patio space was divided into two sections, one the wet zone by the pool and the second being the handout zone. This also allowed for a smaller area of fence with a clean transition. The deck constructed using Azek building products provided the style they wanted without having to worry about maintenance. With the elevation being over 8 feet off the ground, the staircase was given careful consideration. It was put on the side that had the grade in its favor to cut down on the size and to not impede on the usable living areas. Traffic flow and usable space should always be considered when designing your space. Now to get a better view of their beautiful backyard we changed their existing single 3 ft. hinged door for a new 6 ft sliding unit. This type of change does involve some structural modification but well worth it. It gave them the sight line they wanted, allows more natural light and has less impact on the living space as the door now slides. We had a great time constructing this space and love knowing they will be enjoying their home life with family and friends. What could we build in your backyard?

This Minneapolis garage, named after the Owner’s beloved dog Harry, is an example of attention to detail, both in design and execution. The client set out to create a new garage to match his historic home. He wanted a garage that could do both: store his car and host late afternoon soirees. The bar faces the home to create an inviting backyard courtyard. The bar’s custom rolling screen rolls up to reveal a bar countertop, which creates a welcoming spot for friends and family to gather. Careful consideration was made to match the historic home’s turn-of-century brick color and the brick coursing (pattern). Unfortunately, the closest color matched brick was the wrong size. Thus, we worked with talented craftspeople at Welch Foresman to cut each brick in half, which turned the large utility bricks into slimmer Roman bricks. We drew the specific brick coursing to ensure that the structure would match the historic proportions of the home.

The living room features a custom concrete fireplace inlaid with copper, inspired by Japanese Kintsugi pottery. A glowing overhead light handmade from washi paper harkens a resemblance to whales and seashells, a quiet reference to the ocean nearby. Reclaimed, FSC certified elm wood flooring with a no VOC finish was used throughout the home, bringing in natural color and patterning while giving careful consideration to environmental impact. No VOC paints were used throughout the home. A coffee table made by a local artisan offers dual surfaces for storage, with a slim profile that lets the fireplace and overhead light shine. A painting by Kaoru Mansour reflects the homeowners love of birds, and brings in a glimpse of nature in the evening. Delicate peonies in a glass ombre vase complement the detailed work of art.
