This project is unique in that we were challenged with taking 2 distinct stone buildings that had been vacant for years and sited only about 40 feet apart. They had been individual residences on an old peach farm. The zoning for the property allowed only one residence on the lot and our client wanted to maintain both original structures and create one residence from both structures. THE RESULTS Clearly the resulting exterior aesthetic was a successful blending of the old and the new. Careful consideration was given to the scale and proportion of the original buildings and the central new addition joining the 2 structures seems to look as if it was there all along. As with all of our projects, our clients are an integral part of the design process and were extremely satisfied with the results. This whole house renovation captures the essence of a traditional colonial farmhouse. Although it was originally built as 2 distinct dwellings at 2 di erent times it now has all the character of a single family home that sits handsomely on it’s site. The interior blends seamlessly with the new central core addition and the existing updated interiors of the old structures. The walnut kitchen and custom stairs and railings are rich in detail and create a warm central living space to the home.

This Minneapolis garage, named after the Owner’s beloved dog Harry, is an example of attention to detail, both in design and execution. The client set out to create a new garage to match his historic home. He wanted a garage that could do both: store his car and host late afternoon soirees. The bar faces the home to create an inviting backyard courtyard. The bar’s custom rolling screen rolls up to reveal a bar countertop, which creates a welcoming spot for friends and family to gather. Careful consideration was made to match the historic home’s turn-of-century brick color and the brick coursing (pattern). Unfortunately, the closest color matched brick was the wrong size. Thus, we worked with talented craftspeople at Welch Foresman to cut each brick in half, which turned the large utility bricks into slimmer Roman bricks. We drew the specific brick coursing to ensure that the structure would match the historic proportions of the home.

Thompson Remodeling really enjoyed working with this Grand Rapids family to remodel their basement into a family space where they could showcase their favorite sports memorabilia and other memories from their home state of Maryland. After remodeling their previous home just 6 months earlier, circumstances required the family to move. One day upon returning to their new home, they found their basement flooded! Realizing they needed to act fast to repair the damage they contacted Thompson Remodeling to help. When discussing the design for the project, our clients told us how much they had loved the updates they made to their last home and were hoping to use similar warm tones and rustic materials. We looked at photos of that home for inspiration and developed a design that would serve as an entertaining and gathering space that would allow their fantastic collection of Maryland sports memorabilia to shine. Careful consideration was given on how to use every nook and cranny of space, as was the selection process for specific rustic materials that would contribute warmth and visual interest. We used Ghost Wood to create a rich accent wall in the tv viewing area. The fireplace is made of stacked tile that looks like stone and the mantel is a handpicked, old barn beam. The clients told our designer that they wanted to hang a Maryland flag in the basement so she found this fantastic flag made of distressed wood which was hung above the mantel. For the flooring, we selected a gorgeous vinyl plank for easy cleaning and maintenance.

The homeowners came to us looking for assistance to design and build a custom home on their current lakefront property. They were living on the site in an existing small cabin from the 1960s. The property has a steep embankment down to the lake and a zoning setback that created challenges for fitting a custom home on the lot. Xpand worked with the homeowners to find and select the size and style of home that they liked and worked for their unique piece of land. The homeowner was very interested in aesthetics and desired a modern home with sleek low roof lines and lots of windows to take advantage of the lake views. Restrictions from zoning challenged Xpand, but we were able to perfectly fit the home with an angled deck that was within 3” of both the front and back yard setbacks. In addition to a modern aesthetic, the homeowners are hoping to stay in the home as they age, so careful consideration was given to making sure that their new home would function for them in the future by including wider doorways, curbless showers, hard surface flooring and single-floor living. This mid-century modern designed home includes a high covered entry, high ceilings, floor-to- ceiling windows and an open floorplan. Overall, this medium-sized home feels spacious yet bright and inviting. Slab on grade platform construction includes highly efficient in-floor hydronic heat that keeps everything consistently warm in the winter. Throughout the interior of the home, the use of clean lines reflects the modern aesthetic desired by the homeowner. The kitchen features flat-panel doors and a large island with a dramatic quartz countertop. The use of black and white tones throughout with bright pops of color and geometric shapes completes the modern look to perfection. Outside, restrictions from zoning challenged Xpand, but we were able to perfectly fit the home with an angled deck that was within 3” of both the front and back yard setbacks. The unique stylistic deck includes airplane cable railings and lifetime warrantied PVC decking on the back of the house.

This Bozeman, Montana tiny house residence blends an innovative use of space with high-performance Glo aluminum doors and proper building orientation. Situated specifically, taking advantage of the sun to power the Solar panels located on the southern side of the house. Careful consideration given to the floor plan allows this home to maximize space and keep the small footprint. Full light exterior doors provide multiple access points across this house. The full lite entry doors provide plenty of natural light to this minimalist home. A full lite entry door adorned with a sidelite provide natural light for the cozy entrance. This home uses stairs to connect the living spaces and bedrooms. The living and dining areas have soaring ceiling heights thanks to the inventive use of a loft above the kitchen. The living room space is optimized with a well placed window seat and the dining area bench provides comfortable seating on one side of the table to maximize space. Modern design principles and sustainable building practices create a comfortable home with a small footprint on an urban lot. The one car garage complements this home and provides extra storage for the small footprint home.

We focused on creating a nurturing space that would help the family and their guests unwind and heal from the stress of everyday life. An eclectic mix of wood finishes and tones, metals and neutral color palettes create a strong connection to the natural lakeside environment right outside the home. The main living space features a two-story wall of windows, treated only with simple floor-to-ceiling sheers to keep the beautiful lake views as the focal point. The bright, airy space is grounded by an eclectic collection of seating, perfect for a family gathering or a retreat meeting. Our focus was on creating a home that would inspire and heal anyone who enters it, both the family enjoying their vacations and the people invited there for retreats. Through careful consideration of materials and the purpose of this home, we revealed a nurturing and peaceful atmosphere that would refocus people’s awareness to the exquisite natural surroundings.

Working with The Finish I created a living room space that the young family could grow with. We incorporated performance fabrics that are resistant to staining, but also gave them the feel they wanted for the room. The clients wanted a space separate from their Family Room where they could entertain friends, but it also is a main walk through space from the entry into the home. We took careful consideration into all the materials we used to stand up to traffic. The kids love spinning around in the swivel chairs and we kept the edges of the coffee table round to avoid any major kid injuries and also gave them a large surface to entertain and feed a crowd. The main goals of this project was to make it more usable and enjoyable for the owner, to reduce maintenance and to created a covered area for enjoyment year-round. This design also kept the family's new puppy in mind - fencing it in for safety and planting with careful consideration of plants that are safe for dogs. Welcome home to this luxe, modern, and inviting townhome in the heart of downtown Jersey City! We are ecstatic to see this project completed. This 4-story multifamily underwent a major renovation and was transformed into a spacious and functional family home for our clients. Careful consideration of our client’s lifestyle and plans for the future dictated every design decision. They needed a space that would function well now that they are a young professional couple and a space that would nicely accommodate a growing family in the future. Greater emphasis was placed on common family spaces and bedrooms were designed exclusively for sleep with minimal room for work or study and without TV connections to discourage those activities from taking place in these spaces. Instead, common places such as the family room and the kitchen are inviting and foster those activities. Due to sagging floors in need of extensive repair, it made more financial sense to replace them entirely. We took this historic house and by re-pitching the roof in an inverted form we were able to gain an overall 36” which we used for raising the floors. This, in turn, allowed us to bring the ground level up to code and be suitable for living space and gave us additional ceiling room on the upper floors. The ground floor was designed to be used as a rental unit and can be reincorporated into the home later when more space is needed. Both front and back facades were replaced with timeless brick and vertical wood siding and all windows and front doors were replaced. The ground floor features a one-bedroom suite, living room, and open kitchen-dining area. On the first floor, we achieved a more effective entry sequence to the living room, an open-concept design leading to the kitchen. The interior is bright and airy, and the kitchen opens up to the deck in the back and the patio, making entertaining indoors and outdoors seamless. The design works in a way to accommodate the addition of a stair leading to the ground level when the rental unit is incorporated back into the house. Up on the second floor, a suite with a bathroom was designed with grandparents or guests in mind. Also, two additional bedrooms are now being used as an exercise room and a zoom-worthy office but can later be used as kids’ rooms. Last but not least, the third floor features the master suite with his and hers walk-in closets, a master bath, and a library.
