Jaffe was widely recognized for his contemporary residential style and use of natural materials and passive solar forms of design for his many South Long Island beach houses. The 2,700 sq. ft. private residence is located one-half mile from the Atlantic coast and sited in an area that was originally characterized by long vistas over farm fields to the ocean beyond. Now, the area is thickly built up with weekend homes. The project was meant to address this change by creating a place that focuses on the immediate landscape and provides a garden environment for the owner. A collaborative arrangement between two architectural firms brought the project to life. Andrew Reyniak, principal at ARAPC, New York, was architect of record; Mark Anthony C. Verzosa, principal at +macv, Sag Harbor, NY, was design consultant and general contractor. “We knew we wanted to use zinc from the beginning,” Verzosa said. “We wanted a material that had a life.” Approximately 5,500 sq. ft. of prePATINA blue-grey RHEINZINK was specified to provide the life and the look that the design team sought. RHEINZINK Vertical Angled Standing Seam Panels and Flat Lock Tiles clad the exterior along with rough-sawn, locally-sourced white cedar. RHEINZINK Double Lock Standing Seam Panels were used on the roof. “The RHEINZINK is obviously a very versatile material,” according to Verzosa. “The color blends very well into the environment and the sky in particular. My client wanted the layout of the kitchen to stay the same while creating a space with a completely different style. Because she cooks frequently, I maintained useful and easily cleaned materials throughout the kitchen. She felt as though the island was reminiscent of a “cookie cutter” kitchen that lacked in character, so I created an island with a slight overhang in the seating area so it could be a useful space with a view of the entertainment room. One of the challenges in this kitchen was trying to keep as much of the original travertine floor as possible, so when necessary I matched the texture and color of the travertine with a porcelain look-alike. I added cabinets with varying heights and custom accents, such as grapes carved into corbels, to make the kitchen feel less standard. I also encased the refrigerator in cabinetry to give the kitchen a more custom look. An important aspect of this project was completely remodeling the pantry, which required bringing back the drywall and cutting into the archway of the kitchen. Instead of a standard door, I created a pantry with large cabinet doors in which every single interior inch is useful storage space. Essentially, this pantry remodel doubled the cubic inches of useful space in the pantry while improving the overall look of the kitchen. I added a lot of lighting throughout the entire kitchen, including lighting inside and underneath the kitchen cabinets as well as pendant lighting above the new island. With an easy-to-clean porcelain and resin backsplash and many new storage options, this kitchen has a luxurious Tuscan feel while being highly useful.

For this design our client imposed no boundaries on the project, except that the room serve as both library and guest room. The existing fireplace, squeezed into a corner, posed an initial challenge, but now appears well intended for the space. Warm butternut was used to soften the room. Organic details appoint the bookcase columns and the surrounding passages of paneling. Windows were framed with angled panels, and sills were deepened to invite a relaxed view of the yard. The bed is tucked in its own niche, limiting its intrusion upon the room’s other uses. Multi-function rooms require deft design, and exceptional craftsmanship. The primary objective was to create a harmonious, open flow while ensuring privacy—a vital aspect for the couple. The final result respects the original character of the house, while enhancing functionality for the evolving needs of the homeowners expanding family.

Carter Fox Renovations did a complete remodel of this Leslieville home. Our experience in renovating older Toronto semis paid off in this house where we were required to renovate every aspect from re-engineering crooked floors to taming an underground stream below the basement. The main floor was reconfigured to make the kitchen its centrepiece, featuring a gorgeous blue island with maximized capacity - sink, dishwasher, microwave, recycling and ample storage all contained in a modest footprint. Upstairs we remodeled a beautiful, roomy master bath, added a vaulted ceiling to the master bedroom, installed custom millwork in the closet and hallway, repaired walls and ceilings, laid new flooring and baseboards and painted the entire house. In the previously unfinished basement we added a second bathroom, built an enclosed pantry/wine cellar and created a home office with lots of storage. At Carter Fox we love a challenge - the clients gave us a budget and we figured out how to achieve their goals on time and on budget.
