Non-native Bleeding Hearts have been a civilized neighbor to the Golden Ragwort. It does not spread at all, blooms in early April in the Midwest, and will vanish below ground in the heat of July. The Golden Ragwort has been a great plant, here in full shade. This plant will slowly creep each year toward the sun shine. I take advantage of this and relocate some to different places in the yard.

Inspiration for an eclectic dining room remodel in Other

In Old Town Alexandria, homeowners of a beautiful historic home built a colonial garden on an adjacent corner lot. They had vision and patience. The lot was home to a 1920’s stucco-covered storefront with eight garage bays, which included a delicatessen and drycleaners. The process of building the garden took three years from start to finish, including Old and Historic Alexandria Board of Architecture Review approval, re-routing utility lines, a grading plan, and an archaeological dig. Once a Civil War encampment, the homeowners found two privys; dozens of clay marbles and pipes and whiskey bottles; Union officer jacket buttons; and underwear “presser” buttons during a pre-renovation archaeological dig. Milk glass eggs once used to encourage chickens to lay eggs and barrel chimneys from a meat packing plant on the river were also uncovered. The homeowners kept the property distinct from their own lot and first added separate electric and water lines underground. Utilities on the side of the house were also brought underground or low-to-ground as the home’s façade could now be made beautiful for public view. The brick walkway adjacent to the house was re-laid. Inspired by a Mount Vernon barn, the homeowners selected an “old-looking” oversized brick handmade by a Carolina brick company to build the garden paths. Photography by Greg Hadley

Living spaces are compressed between the retaining walls that hold back the earth and a series of glass facades facing the ocean and Santa Monica Bay. The name of the project stems from the physical and psychological protection provided by wearing reflective sunglasses. On the house the “glasses” allow for panoramic views of the ocean while also reflecting the landscape back onto the exterior face of the building. It was custom built with rough sawn eastern Hemlock fibers and cladding. The walls were poured concrete walls with a stucco finish to give it a strong, durable, and rustic feel. Each custom door and window was designed to have a specific purpose for the barn's functionality and client's needs. As a full working barn that includes horses, the cutest donkey, chickens, and ducks, a standing seam roof was installed with solar panels to give daily power to these amazing animals. Coinciding with its history, the barn's floor bricks were repurposed from Second Chance in Baltimore, Maryland.

They came to us wanting to build a multi-use living space that could be used as a guest house, game room and a pool house. I found this Civil War era horses harness/farm equipment in VA and kept it for decades. After seeing other people make light fixtures from old objects I decided to try re-purposing this artifact with an antique-looking light. I gently cleaned off the dirt and then varnished the old wood and steel. The light fixture was a 3 pendant "Mason Jar" with bronze finish that I found at Lowes. I also installed "vintage" style LED bulbs.
