The client is an avid surfer does volunteer work for the Surfrider Foundation, and he was inspire to build a landscape that fulfils Surfrider’s Ocean Friendly Garden program. We combined a mix of California natives with edible plants such as herbs and fruit trees. We created curvilinear beds outlined with rock and pebbles of ascending size to mimic the rock outcroppings of the local coastline. The veggie beds are made of rammed earth—a tradition natural building technique that uses, mud, sand and a small amount of cement. In a rural stretch of East Hampton not far from the beach, the client presented a program for this summer home that called for open, casual entertaining and an extension of interior living spaces to the outdoors -- a counterpoint to his boxy Upper West Side pre-war apartment. We looked to local agrarian building forms and materials, as well as the Modernist tradition of the Hamptons, to develop a contextual vernacular appropriate to the quaint and peaceful property.

Perched in the foothills of Edna Valley, this single family residence was designed to fulfill the clients’ desire for seamless indoor-outdoor living. Much of the program and architectural forms were driven by the picturesque views of Edna Valley vineyards, visible from every room in the house. Ample amounts of glazing brighten the interior of the home, while framing the classic Central California landscape. Large pocketing sliding doors disappear when open, to effortlessly blend the main interior living spaces with the outdoor patios. The stone spine wall runs from the exterior through the home, housing two different fireplaces that can be enjoyed indoors and out. Because the clients work from home, the plan was outfitted with two offices that provide bright and calm work spaces separate from the main living area. The interior of the home features a floating glass stair, a glass entry tower and two master decks outfitted with a hot tub and outdoor shower. Through working closely with the landscape architect, this rather contemporary home blends into the site to maximize the beauty of the surrounding rural area.

12th Street Residence is a residential gut renovation in New York City. The project combined two existing apartments into one spacious, light-filled space, providing comfortable living areas as well as prominent surfaces for art display. The firm worked closely with the client to create moments throughout the residence that would best display their vast and sophisticated art collection. The client had a strong vision for clean and functional spaces that would balance the art, and our program proposal provided maximum efficiency while our details helped convey the simplicity desired. Our services included filing at the Department of Buildings for the combination of both apartments while maintaining the Certificate of Occupancy, and hands-on construction administration that helped the project meet its budget and schedule goals.

A non-conforming, small lot coupled with strict environmental regulations demanded this waterfront house have a vertical orientation to the surrounding protected wetland preserve. Like a moored boat, this house sits at the wetland edge with 360 degree ribbon windows offering views of the spectacular wetlands. The house’s program is divided vertically: the basement is for child’s play, the main floor is the social center of the house, and the top floor is a master suite for the clients. A vertical core connects the levels, with an open-tread stair under an operable skylight allowing light, air and people to move throughout the house.

High up on a bluff overlooking Wellfleet Harbor and the Cape Cod National Seashore we designed the clients program to include – swimming pool, spa, outdoor kitchen and bar area, multiple fire features, outdoor shower, and a relaxing lounge area protected from the elements. We were responsible for strategically navigating through a complex permitting process including conservation. We also had the pleasure of working with a dynamite team of subcontractors for the electrical, lighting and pool installation.
