Studio 1200While most people in town considered this building a "tear-down", the new homeowners wanted to revive the property with an ambitions renovation and addition project. Two major challenges needed to be overcome on this project: the first was preserving the integrity of the original 200 year old barn; the second was designing a complementary structure that would co-exist on the site without looking like a 21st century addition.
In order to achieve these goals, our team studied how farm buildings evolve on a site over time. Additions are usually constructed based on need and function. With this protocol in mind, a grain silo was designed to act as our entry tower and buffer the intersection of the two buildings. The silo acts as our focal point and allowed us to construct very simple buildings to house the balance of the owner’s program. The team paid very close attention to scale, use of materials (many of which were recycled) and developed a vocabulary of modern interior detailing that would complement the original house.
Specific program requirements for the project included: large entertainment spaces, gourmet kitchen with adjacent family room, a squash court, multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, master suite, and plenty of storage space. In addition, since both adults work from home and receive clients in their offices, two offices needed to be created and it was critical to separate the work areas for the more private family spaces. The new silo, with central stair, became the element that allowed these different program needs to coexist effectively.

We were responsible for strategically navigating through a complex permitting process including conservation. We also had the pleasure of working with a dynamite team of subcontractors for the electrical, lighting and pool installation.

This interior design work is located in a building that was once a social housing unit and is now fronting one of the most elegant streets in Rome. The “Ante Operam” situation of the flat was therefore inadeguate to the client’s desires.
The main operation was to invert what was living space with the bedroom. During the renovation of the new living room, an old wooden roof was found on the top of the old ceiling: it was restored and painted in white.
The lamp is the famous “Arco” by Achille Castiglioni, the applique is the “Tolomeo” by Michele De Lucchi.

Sweet Smiling Landscape DesignLocated on a flat, square, corner plot in a dense neighborhood comprised of small homes, this project was a blank canvas to create a landscape that is both an opportunity for community engagement as well as a peaceful space to recreate and entertain, while also expanding the living space on the property. The client is an avid surfer does volunteer work for the Surfrider Foundation, and he was inspire to build a landscape that fulfils Surfrider’s Ocean Friendly Garden program. We combined a mix of California natives with edible plants such as herbs and fruit trees. We created curvilinear beds outlined with rock and pebbles of ascending size to mimic the rock outcroppings of the local coastline. The veggie beds are made of rammed earth—a tradition natural building technique that uses, mud, sand and a small amount of cement. With fruits and flowers hanging into the sidewalk, this garden allows for friendly neighborhood interaction as well as a more-intimate area for this client to relax and entertain in. *Images captured at 1-year and 3-years after

Paul Castrucci Architect12th Street Residence is a residential gut renovation in New York City. The project combined two existing apartments into one spacious, light-filled space, providing comfortable living areas as well as prominent surfaces for art display. The firm worked closely with the client to create moments throughout the residence that would best display their vast and sophisticated art collection. The client had a strong vision for clean and functional spaces that would balance the art, and our program proposal provided maximum efficiency while our details helped convey the simplicity desired. Our services included filing at the Department of Buildings for the combination of both apartments while maintaining the Certificate of Occupancy, and hands-on construction administration that helped the project meet its budget and schedule goals.
